I'm considering getting a new pet. Eventually I wanna get a cat or two, but for now I'm thinking about either getting some baby water turtles or some chinese water dragons. I've always wanted a terrarium and both of these species would be perfect to live in one.

So my question is: have any of you had experience with either of these pets before? If so, how easy/hard are they to take care of? If you had your pick, which ones would you choose with and why?

There's a local place that has some of the water dragons for sale, not sure about the turtles though. However, there is a site called turtlesale.com (http://www.turtlesale.com) that has a great selection of baby water turtles.

Another pet I'm considering are green tree frogs, but haven't done a lot of research on them yet.

My neighbour had a turtle and it was pretty simple to keep alive, just had to be easy on them cuz if you spook them good enough their innards like ooze from their body :(

go for Mantis shrimp if at all possible but you need a lexan terrarium to contain them.

Replacing your need for a child with pets will only make you a creepy old woman!

Mantis Shrimp will crack your skulls wide open, let alone the tank. No thanks :o

As for a child, clearly you didn't pick up on my wanting something that a) won't require a lot of attention and b) won't cost me a fortune. The only reason I can see for having a child at this point in my life would be if there was a food shortage. Tonight I dine on baby soup.

You can get frogs for free if you drive out to the country with a net and find a ditch.

Why not get a komodo dragon?

I have two cat's, you can't have one without getting two.

Having baby turtles is probably a better idea to get before you get the cats.

You can also make a soup out of the turtles.

Everyone I know who kept green tree frogs went through them like toilet paper. Fuckers kept getting out of the tank and dying.

How'd they make it out of the tank? Did it not have a secured lid? If I end up getting frogs or whatever, the terrarium i'm thinking about getting is something along the lines of this one:

All those pets suck, and I'm being kind. None of them interact with you in any way.

Listen. Here's the pet you need.

Any kind of non human primate in an iron lung.

I'm serious. There is nothing more rewarding than coming home to the upside down head of a wheezing Orangutan that has to look at you in a mirror to see you right side up.

My dad had a few different pairs of pirahnas in his life. They don't require too much care, and it was always awesome seeing them tear apart a big bag of goldfish. One time he went away for a weekend and forgot to have someone go by to feed them, and one took a chunk out of the other one and killed it :O

I'm convinced my friend who kept them was just a dumbass, but my cousin had them too. He had a sealed, damned nice terrarium. We never figured out how they kept escaping.

I've owned red-eared sliders in the past. Those things can't die. And you can just dump them in a pond if you don't want them anymore.

I'll take your word for it, Gris! My friend's gecko doesn't bite people. I'm guessing maybe cause he's always baked :x He's cool and just chills when we take him out. Were thinking of getting him a lady friend, so maybe he won't be so lonely when we don't pay attention to him, and aren't there.

So to make this long story short, I guess I will just have to take your word for it until that one day when he tries to bite my finger off! :\

Get an Iguana. Theyre fun to play with (If you get a nice one, you can carry him around the house like a scaly bastard child from the fourth layer of Lake Ogopogo) :D

Get a snake. I hear people who like Led Zeppelin have them.

As for the Tree Frogs getting out of the cage, I think it might be the same deal with cats, anything they can fit their skull through is possible. Never include their eyes for the size of their skull (Some frogs use their eyes to push down food. I SEE YOU!), heck don't leave any gaps that are bigger than a quarter of their skull size. They might actually squeeze themselves into a crevice of a lid and jump out when you let your guard down after you take the lid off, same thing with any branches or whatever objects you put in there. If you're going to get one of those wallpaper decors at the back of the cage, make sure they don't peel off or allow the frogs to get behind them just in case.

Sorry if any of this sounds hoaxy, I'm just trying to think of ideas to ask the pet dealers or for any clues, since I don't have a very long time limit on the computers over here.

I don't know, something tells me you should get the turtles, might be like owning a fish that you can actually pick up without feel guilty about the thought that it's suffocating. The water dragons come off as the equivilent of hamsters except they don't poop as much. Bearded dragons seem pretty easy to take care of from what I've witnessed. Sand (One inch deep I think), crickets and occasional sprayings (I think once a day) and a heat lamp (You can get one of those timer power strips, I have one that has both day and night outlets)

A friend's brother had a bunch of bearded dragons. They were pretty cool and I'd imagine they were pretty easy to take care of, since he was always at work.
