View Full Version : Hardest games

I'm thinking of possibly doing a piece on hardest video games, so if anyone has any extremely difficult games to suggest, I'm all ears. I'm thinking of oldschool teeth-grindingly hard games from back in the day, because even the hardest games these days look like a walk through the park compared to some of those.
So far off the top of my head I've got:
Castlevania
Ghosts & Goblins
Mega Man
Battletoads
Ninja Gaiden
In cases of series, I'm only going to include one game that's representative of the whole. Feel free to suggest others, though I'll be more inclined to use games that I've played or am familiar with...though if I can download a ROM of stuff I'm not familiar with, it might still be included.
I KNOW there are plenty of other games that had me foaming at the mouth in a rage, but this is all I can remember at the moment.

Maybe focus on games that are hard because of difficulty, like Ninja Gaiden or Mega Man, not stupid hard like Ghosts and Goblins or Ghost Busters that is simply hard for lack of lives?
Here's a good one though: Milon's Secret Castle

Oooh yeah, the first TMNT WAS hard. Annoying as shit too.
I played a little bit of Blaster Master at a friend's, but not enough that I remember how hard it was.
And I'm not familiar at all with Milon's Secret Castle, I'm afraid.

I cant even get fast the first driving sequence because of the godawful controls for doing a turn.

I used to get through them by just driving down the very center of the road to avoid cars, but once you got the cop car, it was just impossible.

the Genesis vehicle parts were pretty simple up to the point you mentioned, but apparently for the SNES, the programmers must have decided that pulling off turns should be as insanely frustrating as possbile.

Final Fantasy 2. If you take a wrong turn, you can wander into an area that randomly spawns monsters that are way out of your league and get killed with surprising ease.

I really think The Lion King is a damn hard game. It's not so bad until you get to a level that is constantly raining rocks down, rocks that will MURDER YOU in two hits.

I hate the Lion King.
Rayman 2 was extremely tough.

I just beat Castlevania for the first time last night on the Virtual Console
That game makes me angry :(
Another one I'm adding to my list is Kid Icarus. I can't believe that one hadn't occurred to me until just now.
Keep the suggestions coming, guys...I'll probably just stick with games I've played firsthand, and obviously you don't know what those games are, but some of these are sparking my memory.
Oh, and Contra is actually pretty damn hard if you don't use the cheat code.

The annoying thing about Kid Icarus is that apparently it gets EASIER as you go, but I wouldn't know because I could never make it past the second fucking board thanks to all those impossible jumps. :(

Have you ever heard of Cybernoid? If you havn't (its on the NES), its a VERY hard game, pretty much impossible, and thats ont he easiest setting. the hardest one is what Satan must make you play in hell.
Oh, and Castlevania wasn't THAT hard, though I was a nintendo baby for all intents and purposes. Though I might just be saying that since I can beat it.
On mario all-starts (SNES) the lost levels game was pretty difficult, esp unlocking world 9 (no game overs, or saving).
Thats all I got for now.

When I was a kid, I was insanely good at pretty much any game and could easily beat the nes megaman games, castlevania, etc with no problem. Now, years later, I really suck at them :(

Mortal Kombat 2. Fucking Kintaro.
Same with KARNOV, and Legendary Wings.
If you want some really hard games, dont forget to discuss the insanity that is the Videogame Company CAVE. Those Games are TOUGH.

I finally beat Castlevania with great persistence. I'm replaying Ninja Gaiden now and not finding it nearly as hard as I used to. Oddly, I think I'm better at these games now than when I was a kid. I figured my reflexes would be slower, but my greater experience seems to more than make up for it.

Ninja Gaiden isn't that hard if you take advantage of the unlimited continues.

Bayou Billy and Bart VS The Space Mutants on NES are pretty God damn hard.
Schimid
May 24th, 2007, 11:32 PM
oh FUCK I forgot about Bart v. The Space Mutants.
When I was a kid, I wanted desparately to defeat that game. After years and years of practice, I beat the first level. Minutes later, I was obliterated by a bouncing donut.
I have never been past the second level. I would always think, "Who the FUCK puts quicksand in a mall?! With people?!"
Protoclown
May 24th, 2007, 11:48 PM
Hrmm...I honestly can't recall if I played that one or not, but I do seem to vaguely remember some Simpsons game that nearly drove me to homicide once.
I rented Bayou Billy once and always found that pretty difficult.
Hell, I even found Bionic Commando hard. I could never get very far in that game at all, though I never did own my own copy to play whenever I wanted.

Me neither. Until I played it on an emulator. Even with that it's fucking hard. I beat the game and felt like I never need to play it again.

For me the first level of Bart vs. Space Mutants was never that hard. After few tries I was able to beat it without deaths. For me, the most annoying part was the 2nd level, in which I always died in the part where you're supposed to jump over wet cement. Don't know what the game programmers had been doing, but I tried hundreds and hundreds of times to land successfully and safely on a flying platform, but never made it. Hell, I'm not even sure if it's even possible to get past that part.
Also, Mortal Kombat Trilogy is hard. Even when playing on Very Easy, it's seemingly impossible to beat Shao Khan who was ridiculously easy in MK2 and MK3.

Oh yeah, Ghosts n' Ghouls was also a though game to beat. Sure you had infinite continues, but the levels were tricky and there was only one checkpoint per level. The hardest part was that after you're ready to face the last boss, a fairy appears and tells you to travel back to camelot (1st level) and arm your self with a super weapon. So literally, you start the whole progress from very beginning armed with this "super weapon" which isn't really that great.
I finally managed to beat the game about one and a half years ago with emulator, thanks to save state.

The only Simpsons game I've beaten was Virtual Bart. I got close with Bart's Nightmare too but that's also ridiculously hard. Bart Vs. The Space Mutants though oh my god >:
I can't remember the name of this game but it's an SNES fighting game where in the first level you're against some gelatinous green alien with a visible brain. For twenty minutes at a time I'd be unleashing powered-up attack after powered-up attack and he just wouldn't die. >: Anyone know what I'm talking about? :(

May 28th, 2007, 03:42 PM

did you try throwing the controller at the screen? maybe that's the trick! :( i hate games like that though then it ends up being something retarded like hitting him once in the back of the head or farting on his antennas something.

Any of the marathon games - you just get lost in a labyrinth of 2d electronics, with no one left to kill
Damn those Strategic/Logic games >:
I'm still stuck on Marathon Original, and that's fan made.

I was playing Blaster Master today, and that game is fucking difficult, if only because it has no password/save system.

Marathon 1-2 have some pretty poor level design, but the live overhead map is usually enough to find you through. Marathon infinity, though, has some of the tightest spaces I've ever seen in an FPS and I've never found my way through the first level :<

I finally just got around to renting Super Monkey Ball, and this game is very good at pissing me off.
