View Full Version : Your scariest video game moments

Just curious to know what have been the most scariest moments you've experienced in video games. I usually don't get scared very easily, but when I do I'm always close at having a heart attack.

What I can think of for now are the following:

Resident Evil:

When I was playing the for the first time with my friend at the age of 9, I remember how we both jumped up and screamed like little girls when we had the first encounter with a zombie dog who jumped through the window. For my shame the same occurred almost immediately when another dog jumped through the window.

There was also this part where you are in a room with one body on the floor and a table in front of a closet. There's a diary on the table which is written by some -if I remember it right- scientist who was infected with the virus. On the last page of the diary the scientist has turned into a zombie and written something like "tasty". When you've finished reading the diary, the zombified scientist rushes out of the closet and the body lying on the floor also resurrects as a zombie.

It's quite funny how after playing RE I've never gotten scared by similar scenes in other horror games. (Like RE2 and SH) Probably because nowadays it's way too easy to predict such scenes.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein:

Sure the game it self didn't have any horror themes or such and therefore couldn't predict anything frightening to happen. I was playing the game last summer with my friend. I was in the X-labs where the mutants had escaped. I was walking in a hallway when suddenly a lifeless body of a scientist is bashed against a bulletproof glass next to me. My character wasn't in any danger, but I was completely caught by a surprise, I fell down from my chair while my friend let out a mixture of scream and laughter. The shock I had was so huge that I couldn't stood up for a minute or so.

call of cthulhu dark corners of the earth when you're strapped down in the chair and can only move your head around and are being tortured is the scariest part of a game ever

and that's just basically a fucking cutscene

when you've been playing mgs2 for like 10 hours straight and it's 2 AM and the game starts fuckign with the interface like it acts like it's game over despite the fact that you didn't get hit by anything and then it starts changing over to the old msx metal gear's interface etc etc is pretty scary, i thought i had lost my goddamn mind

The best part of the MGSs is how they fuck with your head like that. If the assholes in the last scary game stuff thread hadn't spoiled the secret of Mantis' mind reading scene then it probably would have scared me pretty bad and stuff.

YOU SEEM TO LIKE THE LEGEND OF ZELDA DON'T YOU

MegaMan 2 the fire level where the lights turn on for a millisecond then stay off for 2 minutes at a time.

The top one is obviously NIGHT TRAP for Sega CD, the scariest part was that I paid $300, and I couldn't even get a boner off it, so that was even more scary, then the Doctor charged me another $300 for Viagra. That was probably my scariest game experience.

Silent Hill was also very very creepy with the minimalist music.

That spiderman sig is hilarious.

the scene at the start of Call of Cthulhu DCotE with the little girl and her "mom".

about 80% of System Shock 2.

Fallout 2 when u visit the haunted farm for the first time in the dark.

So Far Bioshock is shaping up to be the scariest game I think I'll ever play.

Angryhydralisk, I never really thought Go 2 It was really scary. Fucking hard with an ungodly amount of enemies, yes. But when the amount of enemies gets that high I tend to go into rampage mode with the game and not think about fear. Other levels with fewer enemies and more corridors freak me out the most in Doom games.

Oh, and I've never beaten that level without cheats. :(

Resident Evil- That godanmed zombie in the closet

Silent Hill-Taking the sword of Melchoir without using the Ring of Contract on that fridge door in Nowhere. That made me cringe, man.

Silent Hill 3- The underground tunnels.
- the drywalled body and those thumping sounds.
-he dark manniquen department and those hanging bodies

Silent Hill had some fucked up shit too, especially the school and hospital areas. They're not only scary but they're disturbing as hell. Especially the part where you're in the toilets where you can see blood and hear somebody cry.

Lots of stuff to mess with your head, like walking down a hallway with a mirror at the end, then lightning flashes and you see a floating ghost behind you in the reflection.

Silent Hill 1, the hospital. It's fucking creepy, 'cause in the beginning there aren't any enemies to be seen even though the backround music is fucking eerie. Then suddenly it gets really dark, but still no enemies. Then the walls begin to look like they're covered in dried blood and rust and the music is thumping louder. That combined with the distant moaning of the nurses had me crapping my pants. And the hospital cellar...yikes.

Even though not really scary, I loved the creepy atmosphere of the apartment in Silent Hill 4. Reminded me of Roman Polanski's "The Tenent". Too bad the game was kinda gay towards the end.

The underground labs in Stalker :(

YES! I forgot Stalker, but it had some incredibly well done dank dark ruined environments combined with an awesome array of spooky fucking enemies, some that made me wish that there were more bunkers and stuff to explore than the 3 or 4 that it had.

I didn't find Silent Hill as scary as I should of because I played it several years after it's release, and it was more like "oh fuck that will kill me"

No, that was the elementary school. There were only nurses and doctors with strange lumps on their backs in the hospital.

Oooh! oooh! I got another scariest moment! Or two!

SINISTAAAAAAAAAR! - Just the whole monster itself and his catcalls of RUN! RUN! RUN!...Never mind the fact I'm a ship that flies around and gets it's ass kicked.

Typing of the Dead - With all the spooky zombies throwing spooky maracas and shoes and stuff.

The whole game of Time Traveller, the old FMV-hologram-whatever thing. To this day, I still have difficulty playing it.

Also: I've told this story a ton of times, but I'll do it once more.

I was playing Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem with a friend, and we were largely just making fun of it to ease our tension (i was young and it was dark) and swinging around Max' sword and shooting his gun at random. I went to the basement and fought this DISAPPEARING SPOOKY THING and, feeling cocky, kept moving forward, going down into the "sewers"

I go down, and Max is looking dead-straight at the camera, through me, in a pitch-black room. I don't see a door, just a light far off. I laugh and try to attack the screen and walls, until I notice the ladder I just came down is gone. I go to the light, and it's a door, and it makes the "door locked" sound a few times before pulling out, showing Max looking mournfully between the bars of a cell in an asylum.

For some reason, it REALLY scared me. I stopped playing for a while after that.

I completely forgot how many parts of that game were genuinely freaky. The Dog having its one head split into 3 and another mouth and series of eyes growing from the neck between each of them, the Crowd in Central Park turning into one sentient mass of orange goo, almost the entire Hospital Chapter was spooky, the Museum was pretty creepy too, The Ultimate Beings first form that was like a deformed baby gray alien fucking scrambling up the side of the boat.

the second game started off with the same vibe, but then was turned into a resident evil clone later on with secret labs and government conspiracy's later on. But the first part of the game was great in the high rise building when you find like 30 dead people and then one solitary person sitting in a cafe then her fucking cheeks split open, her hair and her arms fall off and she turns into some crazy monster called a Stranger.

Apparently Parasite Eve was based off a book. It would be a better game if the author's/game makers' cursory knowledge of genetics were a little more accurate.

ArrowX
Jul 25th, 2007, 09:52 AM
Its not based on the book its actually a direct sequel. The Japanese doctor Maeda describes a situation like what happened in NY happened in Japan but not as grand in scale. What he describes is the book's plot in its entirety, except that in the book Eve was taking control of the people in the doctors office.

They kind of keep some realism with the mitochondria in humans not being able to evolve, since in reality the genes of mitochondria are pretty degraded and can't evolve. But the ending cut scene and the second came throw that idea out the window.

EDIT: I just scored PE off of ebay, the thread renewed my wanting to play it, since I can only make it to the 4th chapter due to the 1st disk being ruined and the 2nd missing.
