Rush is a strange case. Most of their music is very boring, esp. their 80's output. However, sometimes they write some pretty kickass songs. Tom Sawyer, La Villa Strangiato, Cygnus epic etc.

Their Ayn Rand lyrics are the epitome of stupid, though.

~There is unrest in the forest,
There is trouble with the trees,
For the maples want more sunlight
And the oaks ignore their pleas.

The trouble with the maples,
(And they're quite convinced the're right)
They say the oaks are just too lofty
And they grab up all the light.
But the oaks can't help their feelings
If they like the way they're made.
And they wonder why the maples
Can't be happy in their shade.

So the maples formed a union
And demanded equal rights.
"These oaks are just too greedy;
We will make them give us light."
Now there's no more oak oppression,
For they passed a noble law,
And the trees are all kept equal
By hatchet, axe, and saw.

This suggests that men have a finite capacity for change, as well as a permanent nature that if struggled against, resorts in disaster. The call for equality can only be in death, for 'people are made like that' and to go against it would be absurd. As I said, stupid.

Oh, and let's not discuss 2112 lyrics :O

technically, they're very talented, i can't argue the abilities of Neil pert(sp?) and geddy lee, but the music still fucking sucks.
Not to mention his voice sounds like a squeeling pig filtered with a vacuum cleaner.
technique only gets you so far, i'd rather listen to the stooges.

I like the ealier stuff like "Working Man" and "Fly By Night". I think that both are on the one album before Neal Pert joined the band. They had a few good songs intermittently afterwards but I think that they started taking themselves and their music way too seriously. The same kind of thing happened with R.E.M. and U2.

Rush is more than technical skill. They created their own sound several times over, had their own style which has influenced millions, and having seen them live in '97 I can say they STILL actually have stage presence, old though they are.

Yes, they have cheesy lyrics but if you look at it fairly you have to admit they're a great band. Fuck Ayn Rand, but Rush cannot be denied as geniuses musically. And what voice fits the music better than his hilarious Elven yelp?

i love rush. "2112", "permanent waves", "moving pictures", and "signals" are four kick-the-fucker-ass albums! some of the other stuff is admittedly sorta weak. the best rush song ever is "freewill".

"Spirit Of The Radio" is a pretty powerful song too.
