Don't forget!! Go to the comic store and take advantage of it! And while you're there, check out some of the books that are on the shelf! You might find something you'd really like.
I can make recommendations to anybody who wants them (based on what I know of your personality and what I think you'd like).
EDIT: NOW IT IS TODAY, FUCKERS!! GO GET SOME COMICS >:

I havn't been to a comic book shop in forever, heh. But when I did go, all I read was Scud/Preacher/Milk & Cheese/Jonah Hex (Two Gun Mojo series, atleast). I liked humour and over the top violence. :( But all those titles are gone now, arn't they? :(

Preacher is over, I'm afraid. But you can get the entire series in trade paperback forum. Frankly I much prefer a story that has a beginning, middle, and end to a story that drags on forever.
I think they still do a new Jonah Hex series every once in a while, but it's by no means a regular thing. Just when they get a writer (usually Lansdale if I'm not mistaken) and artist who come up with an idea.
If you liked Preacher, you might want to give "Transmetropolitan" a try. It has the same kind of irreverant humor, the main character is a total bastard (but you love him anyway). Check out the first trade paperback, called "Back on the Street". It only contains 3 issues, so it's cheap. This is another series that is over. Its 60 issue run finished late last year.
For humor and over the top violence, try "Hitman". It's by Garth Ennis, the same guy that did Preacher.

I have the first 4 Preacher TPBs, and I love them with all my heart. I need to buy the rest.
I also liked the Dark Knight Returns, and I heard Miller put out some new ones. So of course, I'm going to have to pick those up. Hitman & Transmetropolitan sound cool, I'll check those out. I've also read one Planetary issue, I still have it. It was neato, so I'll try to get some more.

I use to be real big into comics during the Marvel Vs. DC mini series. A few months after that series died off so did the only comic book shop within 50 miles. I loved the Marvel Vs. DC series. I collected all the comics, cards, and amalgam comics that spawned from it.

Noob3, I haven't read "Planetary" yet but I'm borrowing the first two trade paperbacks from a friend.
If you like that, you should check out "The Authority" (which Planetary is spun off from) which is also collected into trade paperback. It's written by Warren Ellis, the same guy who did Planetary and Transmetropolitan.

What does the comic book package consist of? Does it vary from store to store or is it a certain set? I just found a whole bunch of dead end comics in my basement that never really hit off. Most of them are cheesy rip-offs, they make me laugh.

I can't say on the whole, because I only go to one comic store regularly. The one I go to, they put a few of the official free comic day books in the pack, and then they throw a few other older books that have been laying around in there as well. At least that's what they did last year. And of course, the additional free books I got weren't the best things on the shelf, they were books that nobody had bought. But hey, they were free.
Some stores may give you more, some may give you far less. It depends on the owner's preference, and also when you arrive. Toward the end of the day they'll probably be running low on free books to give out.

Get Starman. If you like superhero comics but always felt like all the cliches are silly, this is the series for you. Plus, it will actually make you care about years of DC history.

Starman has been on my list for a long time, but I won't be getting it tomorrow. I think at long last I will pick up "V For Vendetta".

Spider Jerusalem should be a hero to all of us!
Aside from Sandman and Preacher, I'd say that Transmetropolitan is one of the best written comics I've ever come across.
I love the idea of the bowel disruptor gun(I think I've got that right).
Shit, I almost forgot about 100 Bullets. Especially the one revolving around Joe DiMaggio and John Kennedy. Fucking brilliant!

What's the deal behind this free comic book stuff anyway? Is the US Government trying to get more people to read or something?
Preacher ruled, I was reading it back in the late ninetes when it was out, and at some point I do intend to get every issue in paperback/graphic novel format or whatever they release it as. And the specials! Good 'ol Boys, Saint of Killers, One Man's War! Awesome.
Other favorites of mine were Major Bummer (well, the first few issues at least, before it began to take itself too seriously and got cancelled). Ahh, the joys of seeing a Nazi T-Rex tearing up the city! Ho ho ho! I liked many of the Aliens comics too - Colonial Marines was pretty good, and the Genocide mini series was damn good.
