the UK version is 766 pages, but I think yours has a bigger font (and don't yours have illustrations, too?) so it's almost 900 pages.
If I had kids I wouldn't let them read this one. It's really violent, so I don't think they're going to be able to make it a PG movie without it sucking.

What kicks ass about the Potter books is that they grow more mature as the series continues, so kids can grow up with them. Wish I was a kid :(

I pre-ordered from Amazon, but I didn't bother paying for that overnight delivery crap, so I was pretty surprised when I got home from work yesterday and it had already arrived! Amazon included a note that said they upgraded my delivery mode free of charge for being such a good customer. :picklehat
Little do they realize, I still have 6 of those Book of Challenges that they sent me by accident! Mwuhahahaha!
Anyways, I'm looking forward to reading this one. I'll have to skim through the previous books so I can remember some of the details first, though. I'm also trying to finish Book 11 of WoT, and it's damn boring as hell. :(
[quote]If I had kids I wouldn't let them read this one. It's really violent. . .[quote]
That makes me sad. :(
It's not like reading about violence or watching it on TV is going to turn your kid into a serial killer. Oh no! My child lost his innocence by reading Harry Potter! Hell, if you're gonna prevent your kids from reading it because of "violence," then you might as well lump yourself in with the people who want to ban it because of the Occult. :(
Daphne
Jun 22nd, 2003, 02:26 PM
I should reiterate, that I wouldn't let little kids read it. I agree that kids should get to read scary stuff, but seriously, this is much more violent and scary compared to the last ones. Fuck, I'm 26 and I was crying!
And thank you very much, but I won a comment of the week award from CityTV for writing to the assholes trying to ban it >: I'm not saying all kids shouldn't read it, but I’m saying if I HAD kids, I'd damn sure sit down with them and read it with them because it's fucking dark.

Funny that this particular reference was made. Stephen King was just on the "Today" show this morning promoting his upcoming sequels to The Dark Towers and had nothing but praise for the Rowling's books ... but was wondering when, exactly, she started writing for adults. Of course, that's hearsay on my part. I haven't read any of her books myself ... yet.

* SLIGHT POILERS THAT DON'T REALLY MATTER *
The Dementors in the third book are creepy as hell, and if they pull them off right in the third movie kids will shit themselves. The fourth book gets really harsh at the end, and there are people who die without really making much of a difference to the story except helping Harry mature. Bad deaths. :rock

I wish I'd never said that, because 1) I hate kids 2) I'm never going to have any 3) even if I had one by freak accident, I really doubt I'd give a shit, by then, what they read just so long as they stayed away from me;)
pjalne, I agree with what you said 100%! I'm so nervous about seeing number 3 based solely on the Dementors. The make the ring wraiths look like Pokemon. :chatter
I thought that what Voldemort did to Harry at the end of book 4, was way scarier than the death.
pjalne
Jun 23rd, 2003, 03:25 PM
Yeah, Voldemort did go the extra mile there. My point was that this kind of death scene isn't normally found in children's books. If people die, it's usually not in vain, which it pretty much was here. Stuff like this, combined with how the borders beween right and wrong sometimes blur, is what makes the Potter books pretty unique. There's a Roald Dahlian grotesqeness present, only not as playful.

It's hard to explain, like when Hermione is describing Moaning Myrtle, and she says "it's hard to use the washroom when she's in there" (or something) they changed it to "it's hard to go pee".

I am happy to say that I am now over half way through this book and I can safely say that it is my favorite one of the bunch. It is a LOT darker than the first four, and the story takes some very interesting turns. I will not give any spoilers, though. I do NOT like spoilers.
And, NUMBers, you really need to be less abbraisive towards people on matters like this. So what if litle kids dress like Potter? If these books are getting kids to read, then I think it shouldn't matter. My brother refuses to read practically ANYTHING, and I feel sorry for this country if it is going to be headed by a bunch of illiterates in the next 20-30 years.

Daphne,
Do publisher's have the right to change her material without her consent? Do you think that maybe she gave some revision rights over under the publishing contract? How does kind of thing happen? There's a lot of children's books that are, in some ways, simple enough to be enjoyed by children yet multi-layered with a subtle complexity that can be enoyed and even discussed by adults. The Narnia series by C.S. Lewis is a good example ... the Dr. Seuss children's books provide numerous examples. Do yourself a favor and read something before you comment on it. And if the topic and/or genre doesn't interest you: Shut. the. fuck. up. That is all.

Exactly the opposite, actually. As an analogy, I would consider editing good literature the same as defacing a painting.
As for whether or not they are allowed to do it, I have no idea. I assume so, but I'm not a publisher.
I was just wondering how many rights they give up when they sign contracts and if it varies from author to author based on fame, prestige, good lawyers, ect. I don't know either. :/

1) how do you know that if you only read half the book (a book that is only 223 pages, I might add) ?
2) where are you getting 1000+ pages? The second book is only 251 pages. The last one is the longest and it's only 776 (the UK/Canadian version, anyhow). That's just beyond lazy to me.
