View Full Version : Kick ass games no one knows about

Comrade Rocket

Have you ever play a game that kicked so much ass it hurt. But know one has heard of it. It makes me sad because I have played many games like this. One was RAD for the PS2. That game kicks ASS. It was about giant robots... and anything with giant robots rule.

Uh, there's this one game I like for the PS1 that no one, or at least no one I know, knows about. It's called Threads Of Fate, cool game.

Demon's Crest was pretty fun but not that fun.

I always found Light Crusader on the Genesis to be pretty damn fun, though I guess it felt like crap to a lot of people. I was mostly in it for the music.

I also thought Ranger X would've been more popular, though it was at the time it came out, it just didn't get the respect it deserved later on.

For future reference, when talking about a game that people might not know about, you probably shouldn't use an abbreviation. It sounds like someone made a sequel to Totally Rad.

Anyway, I haven't found that many stores that have copies of Robot Alchemical Drive. It does sound interesting, though.

i remember totally rad.....that was a great game, i think. it was a long time ago and i dont really recall all that much about it.

a good strategy game not many have played is europa universalis 2. i am also surprised by how many people dont play mechwarrior.

I thought Hunter: The Reckoning was one of the best games I've played in a long time, but most people I know haven't even heard of it. And of those who have played it, all of them hated it. :(

God, I fucking love that game :(

RAD stands for "Robotic Alchemic Drive" I believe. I played the demo and it was decent. The controls definitely take getting used to.

The Haunting starring polterguy isn't very well known among even classic game groups, which is very surprising since it's such a good game. Ranger X is another really good one that not that many people have heard of. Zombies ate my neighbors is kinda well known, but I rarely meet anyone offline that's heard of it.

Slaughtering zombies in Hunter is so satisfying. It's like popping bubble wrap or something. I rented it and beat it multiple times, but I still might buy it.

Shooting Power Troopers with the Super Missile in Metroid Prime is more satisfying, as they fly 20 feet away and get stuck on the ceiling.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. Sure it's a Greatest Hit, but if you ask the majority of gamers out there they won't know what the fuck you're talking about.

I also remember playing this game where you were a duck, but the thing was you were ELECTRIC and had to get to the end of the stage before you ran out of batteries. You had a lightning kick sort of attack too.

Also, nobody remembers the old C64 game BARBARIAN/DEATH SWORD, so I decided to remake it with full internet support for bouts/tournaments.

The MSX version of Metal Gear was better than the NES version because:

- You actually get to FIGHT Metal Gear (Unlike the NES one, you get blew up a giant monitor/television screen to prevent the Metal Gear from being built)
- The original music was there
- The NES had a screwed up intro. (On NES) You see a plane dropping off about 3-4 paratroopers and during the game you know NOTHING about the other soldiers that has been dropped from the plane. The MSX one starts off with Snake climbing up a fence after just taking a little swim.[/list]

Firepower 2000 for SNES. It was 2p simultaneous Gradius-style, but one guy was a jeep and the other a chopper - they both had advantages and disadvantages, but the craziest thing was how incredibly insane the powerups were - instead o fjust collecting the obligatory floating powerup to crank up your machine gun or whatever, you had like 10 different weapons you could cycle through with L and R - shit like flamethrowers and lasers and this wierd boomerang thingy that would hit one thing, fry it, and multiply by 3 to the point where you could fill the screen with these insane boomerangs that would wipe shit out crazy fast. It was harder than beat hell, but it was so much fun since 2p simultaneous games for the SNES were mysteriously few and far between.

Also, while a lot of folks do play it, my vote is for Max Payne as probably the single coolest videogame ever made that didn't blow up into some massive CS insanity - if they had built in multiplayer, that game could have stopped the world from turning.

Not many people i know have played Lufia 2. That game kicked ass, it was so damn fun. It was in the shadows of all the Final fantasies on SNES, so its kinda sad that not many people got to experience it. they're making a sequel to it on GBA though, hopefully it wont suck, but i would rather they just put Lufia 2 on GBA. That would be awesome. I love the GBA, but it needs 2 more face buttons.

man, I dunno what you're talking about. Well, actualy I do, but you shouldn't be talking like that. Those are my two favorite snes games, and making them fight each other will make me cry. They are both incredibly bad ass, but each for their different reasons. I have yet to play a better serious rpg than crono trigger, and I doubt that I ever will. Actually, I have to agree. Chrono is the superior of the FF series - hell, even the new ones. Earthbound was an assload of fun, too, but I think I am forever tainted by a certain friend who went as Ness to a costume party and nobody knew who he was supposed to be and he got laughed at all night. Kurushi (http://www.absolute-playstation.com/api_review/rkarus.htm) on the PSX. A puzzle game where you had to mark squares then detonate them when a block rolled over it. The idea was to clear all the blocks before the fell off the edge of the platform or before you got crushed. Every block missed caused a row of the platform to fall away and every detonated black block also caused a row to fall. Hard as hell in the final stage, especially since the game wouldn't let you continue on the Final stage; you had to repeat the 8th.

Sanitarium is one fucked up game, the first place you visit is being run by some huge plant thing, and all of the children are deformed. Plus, they killed all of their parents and put them in the school and then boarded it up. You also played a game of hide and seek against some kids, and one of them is dead, so you have to dig her up. It's one fucked game. Strange ending too. I just remembered this really twisted game i played a long time ago. It was called Bad Mojo. It was about a scientist who came up with a way to kill all the cockroches in the world but before he can use it he becomes a cockroach himself. It was just down right gross at some points, but fun as hell.

Another game was Galapagos (think thats how its spelled). There was this little arachnid robot that you didn't control, but you controled the enviroment around it. One of the first games to use AI (i think)

Both of these are on PC

Xenogears for PSone. It might be popular NOW (I can't find a damn copy ANYWHERE, and I'm not paying $50 on eBay for it) but back when I first had it, it seemed like NO one else liked it in Houston OR in New Orleans. Hmm.

Arcade games? The Simpsons, for one (I only say that because it was HARD to find around here) and the King Of Fighters series. Mmmm, Mai Shiranui :love

The little Freddy Krueger guy was pretty cool too.

alright, alright, but remember:

Samurai Shodown had (at last recollection) at least 3 sequels. Wasn't one of those 3-D? And since when does SNK drop some characters to add new ones? They'd have had all the other characters in it and THEN new ones.

Neither of us is right or wrong. Yet.

Super Dodge Ball for NES. Nobody can seem to remember that game at all around here, but I'd rent that game at least once every week or two back when I was a kid. I'm not sure if it's considered an obscure game or not.

Yeah, no one around here remembers it. Except for the flash animation we had for the intro page a while back. And the rom hack review based off of it. And the review on the classic games page.

HEY HAVE YOU GUYS EVER HEARD OF MARIO BROTHERS THAT GAME IS NEVER HEARD OF BY PEOPLE AND IT IS GOOD.

Seriously, you guys are naming WAY too many well-known games.

And Mystical Ninja starring Goemon was really kickass. As good as, if not better than, Ocarina of Time.

Moving on, a lot of people overlook Harvest Moon. If any of you know what it is, and don't like it, stop. The game is better than you would ever think. I know some people are turned off by "farming sim," but it's one of the best series I've ever played.

Also, I don't think Clock Tower gets enough credit. The 3rd one's finally coming out soon. It's a survival horror game, where you're being chased by Scissorman. Unlike Resident Evil, though, you aren't all badass and shooting monsters. It's like a horror movie, where you have to run and hide, and occasionally try to take him down long enough to get away. I rented the original once, found my friend decapitated, ran from Scissorman, went the wrong way, and got killed. Didn't play it again because I was scared. :(

Oh, and you guys need to tell a little bit about the games (like I did). I might be tempted to go try out some of these games if I knew what they were.

I love Harvest Moon. Own Harvest Moon (SNES), Harvest Moon 64 (N64), one of the GB ones, and Harvest Moon: STH (PS2).

My favorite is the 64 version.

I didn't like the PS2 version. I'm just waiting for Harvest Moon: It's a Wonderful Life for GC and Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town (?) for GBA.

The PS2 one was simpler than the other ones, which would make it a great choice for those who wanna try it out.

I've played the harvest moon for snes a lot, and I used to rent the 64 one a lot. I once played for like 6 hours straight without realizing it. Very addictive game. I heard the ps2 one blows ass.

Tim: Is there really gonna be one for gcn? If so, what's the release date? I might have to get a gcn just for that.

The GC one comes Fall 2003 Iv'e heard.

It looks like it's going to be awesome. Keeping away from what made the PS2 one bad.

I liked the PS2 one. It was more quest oriented with 9 different endings. It's definitely worth checking out. I was disappointed in its shortness though.

No idea if anyone considers these "popular" or not, but I really enjoyed 'Fatal Frame' (back before anything was said about porting it to the XBox) and 'ICO' on the PS2, and a likely little known game called 'Walker' on the Amiga. In that you were a walker style mech. You would move left and right with the arrow keys and aim your head with the mouse. The object was to blow away all of the small soldiers, tanks and helicopters that would attack you. Once you cleared the area you walk off to the next where there would be more to fight. It was quite repetitive, but the soldiers exploded in a very satifying way, and at the time there was nothing else like it.

Yeah, the Blood games were fun, especially blowing peoples heads off. The Fallouts were great, great games. I can't think of many more though. X-Com's were fun, but I could never get them to work.

did anyone ever hear of Evolva? it's a game where you control a team of 4 genetically altered supersoldiers called "Genohunters". it's really cool, casue when they kill stuff, they can absorb it's genetic material, and alter their bodies to include new weapons and stuff. it rocks, and you have to fight this fucking big planetary parasite. I love that game.

I didn't feel like reading all this so forgive me if I say something someone else did.
Qix, Agressive Inline, Mario Paint, Ninja Turtles: Tourniment Fighters, Blade Runner, Time Killers, Smash TV, This arcade game where you drive a futuristic tank and fight on different planets in like a tourinment held by some evil alien that kills the losers or something, and my all time favorite unknown game, Grandia 2. I don't know if anyone has played it, but if you haven't hook up your Dreamcast and buy it. Or buy it on PS2, for more $ but pretty much the same graphics. It will suck you in and never let you quit. My god it's like a novel unfolding right before your eyes. So well written. Just go buy it.

Holy shit this thread is old.

The Guardian Legend(1988) should top that list. Back in the day it pushed the limits of the NES I'm waiting for another game that over kills the use of sprites like that game did.http://www.classicgaming.com/shmups/guardianlegend/image/gs.gif

Also wasn't there a Blaster Master sequel on SNES I remember the plot vaugely, Jason's car was struck be lightning and explodes and you must rebuild it and hunt monsters that have escaped.

Uninvited for the NES was pretty good and not too many people heard about it. I also played this game called "Space Blaster Alpha" or some shit like that in an arcade. It was a stand up game with two joystick like controllers and you were in this First-Person X-Wing type thing blowing the hell out of all of these ships and planets and stuff. Pretty fun and hard as hell.
