I myself would have to choose alternative. Think of all the great bands. Nirvana, The Pixies, Ween, Primus, Sonic Youth, etc. Metal is good, but you kind of have to be in the mood whereas alternative can be enjoyed any time. But anyway, I just wanted to see what the general consensus was on this one.

"Think of all the great bands. Nirvana, The Pixies, Ween, Primus, Sonic Youth, etc."

If those are great bands in alternative I'll have to go with Metal.

Nonsense. I live for the metal. >:

There are so many friggin' manowar songs i could post here right now. If you've heard Therion's "Under Jolly Roger", you know why metal is the true path to victory! Pirates! GYARR! :pirate

Or you could listen to anything by Carnivore. Or Rhapsody. Your life is incomplete without these four bands.

I like metal more than alternative. Nirvana was a good band, but there are far more great metal bands.

Metal. Although the two are not mutually exclusive: ever hear of Alternative Metal?

I have indeed. But aside from Primus and Mr. Bungle, I'm not fond of it.

I like Primus, and claypool's side project Oysterhead. They are sneelpoly. Mr. Bungle's nice too, along with Patton's other bands are generally pretty Good. As for the rest, I don't really like your other listed alternative :(

I'd take metal over alternative anyday, I enjoy the bands from Relapse Records.

Not too fond of Fantomas, but otherwise, I'd say without hesitation that Mike Patton's among (at least) the top ten most talented musicians in the business.

Dude, his best work is in Fantomas.

I honestly can't stand Nirvana. But that's just me.

As for the question at hand, I dunno. It would be rather narrow minded to choose one over the other :/.

"Not too fond of Fantomas"

Yea, I can understand that. their Director's cut album is still kind of Eerily odd in a wonderful way..

Have you heard Tomahawk?

Therion's "Under Jolly Roger"

That song is from Running Wild's self titled album, Under Jolly Roger. If you have to though, get Port Royal by them. If you've heard one of their records, you've heard them all.

I like The Pixies or Nirvana but that doesn't stop me from having long hairs :(

OMG i knew it was too good to be true. :(

I think my mind makes me love all the cover songs i hear, i had no idea. DAMN YOU, THERION! :(

Therion's cover of ABBA's "Summer Night City" is awesome.

So is their cover of Loundess' "Crazy Nights".

Fantomas is far from Patton's best work. Personally, I think California is the best album any of his bands ever made, followed by Angel Dust.

Definitely Metal... i've found that there is a lot more talent in it than alternative... its just not accessible for a lot of people

I honestly like all metal, Death, thrash, black, power, its all good, except most numetal...

I just went from listening to Six Feet Under (uber death) to Blind Gaurdian (uber power)

\mm/ too much metal for one hand...

Maybe there is more talent in metal, but there sure as hell is a lot more creativity in alternative.

Just look at how many sub-genres metal has. Just take Black metal, look at how creative they get with layering their music with orchastras.

than look at say.... nirvana.... whiny annoying lyrics and the simplest writing ever... i can play nirvana songs... and i suck horribly...

crash0814
Jul 11th, 2003, 02:40 PM
Annoying lyrics? Maybe so, but apparently you've never listened to death metal.

"Blooddeathgutsintestinesknifemurderjackingoffwitha handfulofrazorbladesahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!"

You don't find this annoying?

Also, you guys seem to think that what makes a quality tune is complexity. How can you possibly say that? Sometimes what makes a song great is its lack of complexity.

P.S. Alternative has hundreds of subgenres.

crash0814
Jul 11th, 2003, 02:49 PM
Also, you guys all seem to cite Nirvana as an example when discussing why alternative sucks. I can understand why someone would hate Nirvana. Alternative is a very wide term. Move away from Nirvana and look at some other quality alternative bands. Like the Pixies, for example. Have you ever listened to the Pixies? Sheer fucking brilliance (and no, they aren't chicks). Same goes for Ween (but if you're going to check out Ween, listen to their early stuff first). I seriously recommend that you check this stuff out. So do it!

The One and Only...
Jul 11th, 2003, 07:19 PM
The Pixies suck. I admit, I like some Alice In Chains and Cold... but that's it!!!

BTW: Six Feet Under is not uber death metal. In fact, I think they are more death metal roots/heavy metal.

crash0814
Jul 11th, 2003, 08:27 PM
"The Pixies suck."

Name one Pixies song.

The Pixies are about 10 trillion times better than any black metal band ever. And Cold is not alternative. Cold blows so much cock it's indescribable. To call Cold "alternative" would be disgracing its name. Alternative, applied to today's music, is meaningless.

I feel like such an idiot after downloading a Pixies song. You're right man, Pixies are not only better than black metal, but they are better than all metal.

:love Pixies - Allison :rock :rock

I assume you're being sarcastic. But just in case you're not: Yay! I finally led someone to see the genius that is the Pixies! My friends refuse to listen to them because they think that "The Pixies" is a "gay" name for a band. Philistines.

crash0814
Jul 12th, 2003, 04:47 AM
BTW, if you want to hear some of the Pixies harder material (being the metal fan that you are), check out "Rock Music" and "Planet of Sound."

I'm just fucking around, it's just not something I would normally listen to, but since I checked that song out I might as well check the others out.

That song made me lol, I was expecting something more creative like you claimed it to be, haha whatever man it doesn't really matter to me.

crash0814
Jul 12th, 2003, 04:59 AM
Ah, damn. For a minute there, I thought I truly had you... :tear But anyway, it was creative for its time ('88-'91), but after every alternative band copied them (Kurt Cobain admitted when he wrote "Smells Like Teen Spirit" that he was totally ripping off the Pixies) I can understand why someone wouldn't think of it as creative. But really, it would boggle your mind if you could understand just how influential they were, at least in the alternative genre. As you've probably guessed, they didn't really influence metal all that much (well, at all), but metal would kick an estimated 4.3 times more ass if they had.

crash0814
Jul 12th, 2003, 05:02 AM
BTW, in case you're under the impression that I don't like metal or something, that's not true. I like metal for the most part, I'm just not fond of the more extreme types (black, death, etc.) or the sucky types (nu). I respect black metal though, because there's obviously talent there, I just don't like that kind of music. On the other hand, I love thrash. Slayer is one of my favorite bands.

Fantomas is far from Patton's best work. Personally, I think California is the best album any of his bands ever made, followed by Angel Dust.

My sentiments exactly.

I have no preference, personally, since all the "alternative" and "metal" radio stations around here play basically the same list of songs, but I'd have to go with alternative, since back in the day('93-96, I was still in high school), they'd play punk rock on occasion, while the metal stations stagnated with the same old tired AC/DC and Metallica bullshit. Now you'll hear the White Stripes, Metallica, RATM, and fucking Chevelle back to back on both metal and alternative stations.

Sorry, I'm relatively drunk at the moment.

One, one, one, one, ONE ONNNNNNEEEEEE.... single ray of light. And its fucking Ween!
Henry Rollins, on Ween
Ya, Ween kicks ass, so do the Pixies, but other than that, I'm not really into alternative that much. Metal as a genre is in my opinion superior, but of course from band to band exceptions will be found.
