How many levels are there in Arkanoid? I never beat that one.

SPOILERS
I agree with Ghosts 'n Goblins for arcade/NES. (Super) Ghouls 'n Ghosts wasn't nearly as bad as the original. I remember the first time I 'beat' that game on NES with my friend. It was 3 in the morning, we were playing for hours... we got to the end, only to see:
THIS ROOM IS AN ILLUSION
AND IS A TRAP DEVISUT BY SATAN.
GO AHEAD DAUNTLESSLY!
MAKE RAPID PROGRESS!
And then being forced to go through ALL THAT SHIT again!!
:goth
We actually did finish it eventually, but not that night.

Ikari Warriors II. I mean, you can take about eight hits, and if an enemy corners you he can kill you in two seconds. And you have one life and no continues. I's just insane. I can't get two minutes into it without quicksaving/loading.
Also, TMNT.

Jet Set Willy.
Quality 8-bit platform/jumping/dodging/collect em up. You have seven (count 'em) lives, many hundreds of screens and many thousands of items to collect. No.
Jet Set Willy 2
Exactly the same layout but with better graphics... except that more areas were added and expanded the game size five fold. To help you, they gave you eight lives instead of 7.
Jet Set Willy 97
This was made by a fan of the originals, and used the same graphics but had new areas - and was still just as impossible.
No-one, ever, has been able to complete these buggers. So there,.

Ikaruga >: >: >: >: >:
Haha glad to see you tried out that game... it really is a bitch. A fun bitch, but a bitch nonetheless.
And yeah Ghouls 'n Ghosts/Ghosts 'n Goblins is definitely one of the games atop my list.
I would also have to say Abe's Oddworld and Abe's Exodus were pretty goddamned hard games. They really test your patience...
Astrosmash for the Intellivision was also crazy when you got to the higher levels. Shit eventually fell from the sky so insanely fast that it became friggin impossible. Damn I loved that game...

pj,
I don't know if this works on an emulator, which it sounds like you're playing it on... but on the original nes, there was a Ikari warriors code that was so well known, that they didn't even bother to give you any lives. after you died, you'd just push A-B-B-A (I'm pretty sure that was the code) and your character would respawn. No bad dance music either. However, I would recommend you cut your losses and just quit playing anyway, because once you get to the final boss, the respawn ability is taken away, and I've never been able to put a scratch in him... anyway you look at it. that game sucks.

I can never beat Legends Of Zelda: Links Awakening. It pisses me off cuz my friend got it and beat it in like a month. im such a failure...

I don't think Ikaruga was all that hard. It wasn't easy, but supposedly there's a way to win it without firing your guns. You just switch back and forth between black and white and use your special weapon. I can't even imagining doing that. :(
Battletoads wasn't hard, because I'm certain there was nothing after the fucking speeder bike level. The guys who made it just fucked up and forgot to make it possible to do that level. >:
The Adventure of Link (Zelda 2) was a hard fucking game. But only really after you start going through those caves to get to the great palace. Up to that point it's easy, but after that it's a bitch. The great palace was a pain in the ass. >:

Jul 19th, 2003, 02:08 PM
I could do TMNT for the nes up to the point where you reach Splinter. After that it's fucking impossible.
I wouldn't say Ghouls 'N Ghosts for the Snes was that hard, but I never did complete it the second time round when you had to make sure you completed it with that blue fireball weapon or whatever it was. :(
Megaman. No saves.
The Simpsons: Bart's Nightmare. What the fuck was up with that game?

Bart VS. The Space Mutants. I would get to the museum level, which would be impossible to finish within the time limit even if you were invincible and could run over all the pits, and then I would get to the dinosaur and I could never defeat him because I didn't realize you were supposed to jump onto two invisible platforms hanging above certain death. I tried playing it on an emulator a month ago, and I got furious at the game for not making any sense. It really was a shitty game.

I thought that was the only good Simpons game. Well, that and the arcade one. I didn't think it was that hard. I beat it though.
I never beat SMB 3. The last levels were too hard.

the only games that I have ever wanted to absolutely destroy my controller over were fighting games. for example, in Guilty Gear's later fights I hate how your opponents almost always unleash a 25 hit hyper combo the EXACT moment that you let go of block. even if you hadn't taken a single hit that entire round you are more than likely going to be near death when the computer finishes with you and it's almost impossible to tech hit or counter out of it.

I definitely agree with Ghosts N Goblins and Battletoads. Most people I've met don't even consider the 5 lives code for Battletoads to be cheating, and I can't imagine ever finishing it with two players.
I was going to say Contra was tough, but I managed to beat that (two players, but still a win) last summer. I always found Metroid, Kid Icarus, and Rad Racer to be difficult, but that might be because I was seven years old when I actually tried to get through them.

There's a difference between games that are hard, and games that are hard because they were made really shitty (Bucky O' Haire, Bart vs Space Mutants).
And I'm mad at you all for not even mentioning CastleVania.

That's a good point. Some games were extremely difficult, but mostly because they were so fucking weak to begin with I couldn't care enough to make any progress.
Yea, the first Castlevania was hard... fucking medusa heads and armor axe things...

i beat the bike level of battletoads without cheating :<
Les Waste
Jul 24th, 2003, 05:01 PM
You lie. Nobody can get past that fucking bike level even if they do cheat >:
It's not that the entire thing was hard, because as a whole I didn't think it was that tough. But there was always ONE fucking jump I could NEVER make. It was always just a little bit longer than the most the fucking toad could jump. I think I somehow made it by cheating once or twice, but then there was another jump just as long that killed me FUCK YOU BATTLETOADS, YOU WERE A SHITTY GAME ANYWAY >:

I'm nominating Metal Gear Solid 2:Substance as the hardest game in the universe. I've actually broken one of my PS2 controllers (something nearly impossible to do) because this thing has pissed me off so much.
Getting all the 1st place scores in all the VR Missions is something I must do. And the game is fun. But if I ever meet Hideo Kojima, I'm going to beat the ever-living shit out of him for some of these.
PS - I'll give anyone $50 to come over and beat some of these missions for me.
Schimid

BUCKY O'HARE WAS NOT MADE SHITTY. It was kinda like Mega Man, but, like, 80 million times better.

Jul 25th, 2003, 02:57 AM
If you held back when you hit the jump, you went higher. Yeah.
The hard part is the end with all the walls. But it has a simple-ish pattern and if you time it right you can still jump over the tall ones.

For some Reason i could never BEat Capcoms Strider-
Bionic comando was a major bitch for me too- Then again my reflexes @ 9 years old werent all that hot i suppose ;) I think i did eventually beat that one-
Hell come to think of it- Metal gear itself was a major pain, i could never kill the goddamned metal gear at the end... -I SUK!

Maybe I'm stupid, but I thought the last Monkey Island game was FUCKING IMPOSSIBLE without a walkthrough. How the fuck is anybody supposed to figure some of those puzzles out? AHHHH!! Still a funny-as-shit game, though.

Cyborg Justice. One of the greatest games ever, I mean, you can put your opponent back together when they're dead to kill 'em again, but still, the second boss keeps RIPPING MY FUCKING TORSO OFF >: >: >: >: >:

I think I've said it before, but I don't care, and I'll say it again anyway.

There are so many hard games out there... Kid Icarus was hard. I could never beat that feckin' game. The Ninja Gaiden series were hard, too. But the hardest game I've ever played was this crazy game on the NES called "The Last Ninja". I wanted to beat it so godamn bad but the controls are all fucked up and it pissed me off. I could never beat P.O.W. either for some reason.

I'd say Dark Angel for the PS/2.
