There was a proposal submitted by Rep Marilyn Musgrave (R- CO) on May 21 to amend the Constitution to forbid homosexual marriage. I can't believe, in a country that claims to be enlightened and reasonably intelligent, that something like this is even getting off the ground. And, as you'll see, the prez has officially "come out," as it were (sorry, it's basic irony, but too good to pass up) in opposition to gay marriage.

Bush wants marriage reserved for heterosexuals
Urges America to remain a "welcoming country"
Wednesday, July 30, 2003 Posted: 1552 GMT (11:52 PM HKT)

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Bush said Wednesday he has government lawyers working on a law that would define marriage as a union between a woman and a man, casting aside calls to legalize gay marriages.

"I believe marriage is between a man and a woman and I believe we ought to codify that one way or the other and we have lawyers looking at the best way to do that," the president said a wide-ranging news conference at the White House Rose Garden.

Bush also urged, however, that America remain a "welcoming country" -- not polarized on the issue of homosexuality.

"I am mindful that we're all sinners and I caution those who may try to take a speck out of the neighbor's eye when they got a log in their own," the president said. "I think it is important for our society to respect each individual, to welcome those with good hearts."

"On the other hand, that does not mean that someone like me needs to compromise on the issue of marriage," he added.

Bush has long opposed gay marriage but as recently as earlier this month had said that a constitutional ban on gay marriage proposed in the House might not be needed despite a Supreme Court decision that some conservatives think opens the door to legalizing same-sex marriages.

The Supreme Court struck down a Texas law that made homosexual sex a crime, overturning an earlier ruling that said states could punish homosexuals for having sex.

Conservative Justice Antonin Scalia fired off a blistering dissent of the ruling.

The "opinion dismantles the structure of constitutional law that has permitted a distinction to be made between heterosexual and homosexual unions, insofar as formal recognition in marriage is concerned," Scalia wrote. The ruling specifically said that the court was not addressing that issue, but Scalia warned, "Do not believe it."

Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, R-Colorado, is the main sponsor of the proposal offered May 21 to amend the Constitution. It was referred on June 25 to the House Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution.

To be added to the Constitution, the proposal must be approved by two-thirds of the House and the Senate and ratified by three-fourths of the states.

To me, marriage should have nothing to do with laws. Nothing at all. It should be a completely religous process, and therefore be limited by what religon you are a member of.

I think marriage should be like a contract. A contract that can be for any period of time and with as many conditions as needed. I also beleive one should have the right to make as many marriage contracts with as many people as that person wishes to at whatever time that person wishes to make them.

This would solve alot of societies problems.

Fuck religion.

These contracts wouldn't be a marriage in the traditional sense. They would be contracts. They need to be seperate things.

Just because you're an atheist doesn't mean we all are. Fuck atheists.

Marriage is a social institution, sanctioned by tradition. I don't the this, or any, government has a right to interfere with it. Our electred politicians should be less concerned with maintaining the Status Quo and more worried by economic trends arising in Iraq during our post-war rehabilitation period.

Well, I can't tell you how good it makes me feel to know that money which could have been devoted to a real, useful cause, is now going to pay lawyers to figure out how to create the most ignorant, hateful constitutional amendment in our country's history.

Edit: Thanks, ZS. I guess I forgot about that one.

It's sad that, these days, there are so many things to be pissed about that I forgot this one entirely.

Let's invent another legal union, then, that's LIKE marriage but isn't marriage ;) ... like they're adopting each other ... except nobody's the legal guardian ... unless you're into that sort of thing. :)

Welll, thankfully the Pope has gotten on board the no Gay Marriage express, and I'm really really glad. I was very worried he might waste a lot of valubale time and effort trying to figure out how to keep Priests from molesting kids and reversing the institutional trend of hiding and protecting pedophiles. I'm glad he's found this important, vital mote in the eye of marriage and isn't going to waste any time screwing around with forest of boy-humping-beams the church has in it's own,

Marriage Vows Edit #2:

Change "do you < blank > take < blank > as your lawfully wedded husband" to read "do you Bob, take Fred as your new daddy?".

When I was on vacation this last week visiting my relatives in Indiana, this was a topic that came up at one point. I had to sit and listen to them talk about how the USA is turning into Gammora and how utterly apalling it is that gay marriage should even be considered a viable thing.

That made me mad :(

But I couldn't really argue with them, because I was stuck there with them and you CAN NOT win an argument with them about shit like that anyway. They pull out the Bible and next thing you know NOTHING YOU SAY matters unless it comes directly from that book. :rolleyes

My grandmother changed her mind about that whole Muslim thing after that email I sent her. I posted that somewhere on here. I was happy for that at least.

On the whole, I think my family is willfully ignorant about a lot of things. They hide behind the curtain of religion and use it as an excuse to hate and fear a lot of what they don't like about the world. And if they heard me talking this way, they would say that the Devil has gotten ahold of me.

I still love them though. They're good people. I just think they're as misguided as they seem to think I am.

That, Burbank, is a far more interesting question than you know. Are you aware of the Mahabarata and corresponding archeology, or simply an idle comment?

No, it's kind of a joke within a joke. I'm always amused that people think Sodom was a city of gay people. Like the mayor said "You know, we all like butt sex so much, let's name our town Sodom."

Actually the only sin mentioned in the bible the soddomites were guilty of was inhospitality.

I've also always wondered why, when picking names for 'sins', no one was interested in calling something Gamoramy. If it's still up for grabs, I think I'd like to call talking louldy on a cell phone while on commuter rail gamoramy.
