This one should be better than everyone posting a new topic about a little question they have for a game, and hopefully people might respond to it or something. :/

FF8: I'm replaying it, and i remembered that i never learened how to look at the battle meter. The tutorials don't mention it or anything, but it supposedly contains stats about how many times i've died, run from battle, etc. The only problem is that i can't fucking find it! Do i have to talk to someone to use it or something? This bugged the shit out of me last time, too. If i can upgrade it, how the hell come i can't SEE it? Is it something that i've been looking at the whole time, or what?

After Cid gives it to you it should be in the tutorial section man.

O .o

Afraid i don't see it, chief. Is it under the main menu, or a sub heading? I know i've gotten it, and the upgrade for it inside of the prison.

I've played through FF8 multiple times and I've never used the battle meter. Partly because I never cared enough, but also because I could never fucking find it.

FF8 is fun, but once you find the Islands closest to Heaven and Hell and realize you can use them to get unlimited Ultima, Aura, and other good spells, it gets WAAAAAY too easy. Except for Omega Weapon, the last level is a fucking joke.

Ninjavenom
Aug 8th, 2003, 02:10 AM
The game was way too easy anyway, if you've got enough HP and the right spells junctioned. Regen + HP :love

Les Waste
Aug 8th, 2003, 02:52 AM
Ultima + strength = :love

and once you can make spells out of items, the game because easier than Final Fantasy Mystic Quest. It's supposed to be hard to get the Tonberry GF, and yet, it wasn't.

Ninjavenom
Aug 8th, 2003, 04:34 AM
Aye, i stomped the shit out of him this time. As long as you've got HP, the world's your oyster. I found the meter, too. Go to the menu and go to Information > Information. Apparently i missed that every time i've played this for the past four years. >:

Another ff8 one: How do i avoid spreading a rule? I can't play against someone when i select "no". How the fuck do i get Edea and Seifer if Random is in play? >:

timrpgland
Aug 8th, 2003, 11:39 AM
I'm not sure exactly, anymore, have you talked to that card expert lady in balamb?

You could have gotten Seifer from Cid during CD one before you head to Timber.

What are all the stats that the battle meter keeps? I don't remember.

Ninjavenom

It keeps the steps walked, the battles fought, the battles won, and the battles run away from.

It's not the random rule that I hate, it's all those other fucking rules. Like Combo, and same wall, which I can't figure the hell out for the life of me, and the other retarded ass rules I can't remember.

The card game in FF9 is better, but it's harder to find all the rare cards. I got pretty much all of the rare cards in FF8 that I don't have to play people in that fucking space station to get.

That pissed me off so much >:

Ninjavenom
Aug 9th, 2003, 03:56 PM
Haha, fag. It only took me two tries to get Laguna. :)

Les Waste
Aug 9th, 2003, 04:56 PM
:(

At least I got the Seifer card >: :(

And random is the worst rule. I forgot about how people I challenged only have good cards, so random doesn't hurt them. But the game always would make my cards be four of the cards you start out with, and a character card, so that I wouldn't stand a chance of winning, but I would still lose a valuable card.

I almost threw my Playstation across the fucking room after that happend for that 400th time. >:

Ninjavenom
Aug 10th, 2003, 05:52 AM
That's why i stopped playing against them. Just a game my ass, Edea's family fucking cheats! You'd think that getting Cerberus and Quistis would make you a shoe in, but not when your other three cards are Geezards. >:

My girlfriend completed every aspect of FF8. :)

I remember her fighting the 1.6 million HP Omega Weapon, and winning the FIRST TIME. Woo!

It's random, what rules get spread when you play (although still based on the last region's rules you played at). If a rule pops up that you don't like, reset without saving, and try again. If that doesn't work, play somewhere else with a more desirable rule, and reset if they stick you with one you don't like.

i tried and tried to play ff8. but i just couldn't get over the fact that it slides you on this idiot experience scale that ends up making you weaker for every level you gain. :| and squall is an irritating goon.

Ninjavenom
Aug 10th, 2003, 02:33 PM
I can't wait to fight Omega this time, because i just fought Ultima and annihilated the hell out of him. Squall died once, Irvine twice, and i only cast Aura twice (each separately on two people). He was level 100, too :(. AP Ammo :rock

As for the experience scale? I don't think it makes you weaker, chief. You have to earn the same exp. to go up a level every time, though, that's what annoys me. It's far too easy for a character to get to level 100 on that scale.

mew barios
Aug 10th, 2003, 02:40 PM
no i mean. when you level up the enemies have their level scaled. the less you level the easier enemies are to beat. it's dumb. dumb. :O

chief? :(

James
Aug 10th, 2003, 02:50 PM
Yeah, that kind of ticked me off too. Leveling up just game the game more challenging. While you have an HP limit, the enemies don't.

Omega is hard and easy at the same time. Basically, trying to do it the "proper" way is pretty much impossible. Your best bet is to just cast Aura on Squall, use his limit break, and pray he uses his most powerful attack. If not, reset.

Instant death.

FF7 hurt my feelings and FF8 turned me off of FF altogether.

Ninjavenom
Aug 10th, 2003, 06:53 PM
Sure mew, everyone's "chief" or "boss" or "buddy", whichever i feel like putting into me sentences at the time.

I don't mind the level scaling at all, though. It just made you have to think more about what you're junctioning. It also made sure you kept up with the latest possible magic all the time. For instance, as soon as you could go anywhere with the garden, you'd have access to Ultima (5,000g at Shumi Village), if you're willing to pay for 10-15 of the spell per draw. I dunno about you guys, but i explored every nook and cranny of the map as soon as i could with the garden. As long as you keep up with the availability of spells, the game's very, very easy.

I didn't like FF8 as much as 7 when i first played it, but now i love it more than 7. I'm not a fan of the old ones, so that might be why i can like them so much. I played the american FF2, and i loved that, but now i get bored with RPGs unless they've got tons and tons of eye candy to distract me from the monotonous math.

The first time I won FF8, Dirk (Squall is a gay fucking name so I renamed him Dirk >: ) was in level 100. Zell and Rinoa were both in like level forty something, adn all my other characters were like in level 25 to 30. I could have easily won the game using only one character, because that's basically what I did. But it's not like I needed anybody to be in a higher level. Everyone's HP was still at 9999, because of that junction shit. I beat Ultima weapon on my first try, in only three moves: Draw Eden, cast Aura on Dirk, and Dirk did his fouth limit break. I don't even know if he attacked me. I've never beaten Omega weapon, although I didn't try too hard what with him being completely inconsequential and all.

The thing that really pisses me off about FF8 is the whole way you get new weapons. Getting adamantine is ridiculously hard, since those fucking turtles you get it from are rare as hell, and even if you do finally find one, it usually won't drop any adamantine.

Aug 10th, 2003, 07:46 PM
So first you bitch about it being too easy, then about it being too hard. :rolleyes

Les Waste
Aug 10th, 2003, 08:51 PM
It's not so much hard as it is annoying to upgrade your weapons. I probably could have won the game without upgrading any of my weapons once, but since I'm a completist fag who has to do everything short of beating Omega weapon (cause I don't care about beating things that give you nothing but a worthless item that says you beat it), I spent way more time than I should have pacing back and forth on that one long, thin island that's all beach trying to find those fucking turtles and screaming every time I ran into an enemy that wasn't a turtle. And it's not like those fucking turtles are hard, it's just that they drop the items you need to get the best weapons, and even seeing one is a fucking miracle, and when you see one it usually won't drop the adamantin. I don't know why they couldn't have just, oh, I don't know, had fucking weapon shops where you could just simply BUY better weapons instead of piecing them together from screws and steel pipes.

In fact, I'm so much of a completist fag, that I collected the 100 Malboro tentacles necessary to get Quistis's last limit break, even though it fucking sucks. Which means I suck.

Ninjavenom
Aug 10th, 2003, 09:07 PM
I don't wanna alarm you, Bobo, but the turtles are a 50% chance occurence at the beach south of Galbadia Garden. I'm just trying to get a hold of the necessary parts to refine pulse ammo, i'm having your Adamantine problem with Elnoyles in Esthar City. Odin cut one of the motherfuckers down before i could mug him. >:

Aug 10th, 2003, 11:31 PM
The thing I hated about FF8 was trying to get Doomtrain, even though he's a valuable GF. It's annoying as hell to beat Malboros to get the item for Doomtrain (the only way I killed him was by Odin, which he very rarely appears for harder enemies) and it takes longer if you tried to convert the Malboro cards into M. Tentacles. After that was the Remedy +, which you could only get after you got Alexander and getting the required GF ability. It's pretty much going back and forth trying to find and get items.

Oh yea, I don't know if anyone mentioned this, but I believe you get the battle meter by some guy in the Desert Prison while escaping.

Ninjavenom
Aug 11th, 2003, 12:56 AM
Malboros can be mugged easily for two tentacles a piece, and then you go to Cactuar Island to level up the Skill for Alex, then you mug some Wendigos out in the Roshfall Forest. I didn't think it was hard at all. It's all about the mugging.

SLjimbo
Aug 11th, 2003, 01:43 AM
Yea, but you wouldn't be able to mug after Malboro gave you the Malboro Breath. I had no problem getting the steel pipes.

Ninjavenom
Aug 11th, 2003, 01:54 AM
Really? I dunno, i maxed everyone out at the edge of the desert closest to Cactuar Island, the cactuars still appear there. I had everyone junctioned with haste on their speed, and my mugger also had Auto-Haste, so it was more of a hit-and-run thing for me.

The thing I hated about FF8 was that it wasn't as good as FF4, FF6 or FF7. Almost FF5 for that matter too. FF8 is still a good rpg though.

One thing it does have going for it is the GFs, I like the GF/Junctioning system but then again I hate drawing :)

Les Waste

You pussies complaining about getting enouch Malboro tentacles for Doomtrain made me remember my brilliant strategy for getting 100 Malboro tentacles, and for leveling up all my characters to level 100 in like three hours on the Island Closest to Hell. Here's what you do:

One of Quistis's limit breaks will kill any non-boss enemy instantly, even Malboros. I kept Quistis's HP at the highest it could be where she was still kneeling, and I gave her some GF ability that makes her little meter thing full when the fight starts so she can attack immediately. Then I just have her use that limit break. Doing that, you can kill a Malboro EVERY TIME, before it can even use bad breath.

It's kind of cheap, but, whatever.

Ninjavenom
Aug 11th, 2003, 03:40 PM
...you smart bastard. >:

I just mug 'em and run, but when i get Ribbon i'll show those Malboros what the fuck for.

How does GF Alexander and Diablos work? :( Their damages seem to fluctuate alot :(

Ninjavenom
Aug 13th, 2003, 01:57 PM
Alex's is something to do with the target's resistance to Holy, as far as i know, and Diablos' is directly related to his level. For instance, at level 10, his attack will hit for 10% of the target's total hp. At level 50, 50%. At 100, 100%. The only problem is that he can't hit for more than 9999 at a time, so after disc 2, the system's gonna be pretty flawed, and percentage above level 50 is meaningless.

Les Waste
Aug 13th, 2003, 06:29 PM
The cactuar GF is probably my favorite cause it does the same amount regardless of the enemy's defense, the only thing is you need to get it in a high level or else it sucks.

One thing I like in FF9 more than in FF8 is how you don't have to see the animations for the GF's every time you use them. Yeah, they're cool, and nice and all, but it's fucking annoying have to watch them over and over and over.

Until just now, i was unaware that a steel pipe will give you two aura stones. Did anyone else catch that? Here i've been trying to draw it all this time, when i could just mug some motherfuckers and refine it. >:
