i was reading jixby's thread about the Lonely Island site, and all the really funny movies they have on that site. i started thinking about it, and we should make our own films, and then vote one who has made the best film.
i think we would need someone to host them, possibly to format them (i think achimp would be a real winner for this task, or some other nerd :()and should make an agreement on maximum length and such for contest purposes.
would anyone want to participate?
if anyone is intersted, and we can get someone with the proper equiptment to properly digitize the films willing to help, i see this as a possibly fun contest.
would anyone want to participate?
and if you do, would you be able or willing to help with digitizing and hosting?
if we get enough people willing to play, i will handle the setting up the deadlines and getting a SHORT FILM CONTEST PREMIER NIGHT, and after the first month we can all review how the contest went, refine the process, and try to make it a monthly project.

It's a great idea, save that I think very few people have the necessary equipment. And by very few people I mean me.
Me and my siblings or friends used to record hundreds of movie shorts with my dad's prehistoric shoulder-mounted photonic bazooka of a camera, but then he (my dad) dropped it on the night of my (gradeschool? I think) class musical. Don't get excited, I had a literal handful of lines and no songs of my own.

This is a great idea, even though I have no camera and no friends to do it with :(
Although it's still a great idea, just so I can see other people's films

I have no experience with formatting videos. :(
But, my friends and I used to make movies all the time. Of course, they're all full of in-jokes so no one here would necessarily find them funny, but we learned a lot about filming something with just a camcorder. ;)
In our last movie, we got really high-tech and had Director animation cut scenes patched in through a TVout video card, a soundtrack AND ripped off footage from Dumbo!

Some friends and I were doing a mockumentary about the history of student sketches some months ago. I might upload the part where we parody Akira Kurosawa and I'm a samurai. It's in mock Japanese with English subtitles.

Your friends know who Kurosawa is?

We all met in film class, so...
You should see our takes on Griffith and Eisenstein.

Jaeger's roommate has a video camera (not a very good one, but hey) so I'm all set. I think.

Jaeger and I were talking on AIM recently about doing some short films actually, but ours would be converted to flash.

how hard is it to digitize video tape? and that to flash? what difference would it make in the different formats (quickplay, mpeg, etc). there are studios around here that do it for family movies, but i have no idea what that would cost, but for just a few minutes of video it cant possibly be really expensive (i will look into this option and give an update on price)
i was thinking of making a full length movie (but not a funny one) for about two months now, mostly cause Zoe has taken an interest in acting and movies, and we started talking about how fun it would be to try and make a movie (our motto: whatever piece of crap we came up with visually, the story we wrote would be better than Americas Most Wanted)
we should take the short film thing a step further and create our own undergroud tape tree. as well as making a short film, we should try and each create a 28 minute show (funny or whatever) and add it to the tape, and just keep the tapes moving around, and add shows as our turn came.
but thanks to my pig experience, i know i can not be truly trusted to keep up with this.
but it would be cool.

I have all the necessary equipment; digital video cameras, media converters, digital video editing software out the wazoo, access to tons of fast computers... But I don't have the time to play with everyone's shit.
But I'll make my own, yo.

Rah!
I do a lot of video work for my studio-based projects - I normally shoot onto Hi8 film on my camcorder, then I digitise it and do all the editing in Premier.
Sadly, my work tends to be kind of arty and random. Recent projects include a recruitment video for the Union Tech Crew featuring a time lapse section; and a lighting video with lots of groovy lights at clubs and gigs.
Of course, it'll never happen. But we can dream :melt

I have been fine George thanks for asking. My wife is about 6 months pregnant with my baby girl and I'm currently in the process of becoming a better more disciplined human. It's amazing.

What kind of equipment/software do I need to digitize a movie?
I've got a video card with Video In/Out on it, so hooking up a VCR is no problem... but what do I do about the sound? Does that somehow hook up to my line in/mic port? What program do I use to record it? :(
There's one movie that my friends and I made many years ago where I play a pedophile comedian and talk in a really high-pitched voice for the whole thing. ;)
