I just got into a heated debate with my boyfriend as to what constitutes campiness in a film. He insists that the movie Independence Day is campy, wheras I disagree. Your opinions?

Let's try to be more conservative with the word masterpiece.

Are you being sarcastic or do you seriously believe that?

I'm serious. I wouldn't call Independence Day campy by any means, but it's certainly no masterpiece.
Here's a lesson Drew, read quotes before you respond to things that were never intended for you to respond to.
I am the stupid. :suicide

I'd say Independence Day was kitsch. Which means any campiness was unintentional.
Camp is when you intend to ham it up. Andy Warhol was camp. John Waters films are camp. Charlie's Angels are camp.

Let's be a little more accurate in our definitions here. "Independence Day" isn't camp, it isn't kitsch. It is in fact a "horrid pile of shit".

You have to admit that downloading a computer virus into the alien mothership was extremely clever though. :rolleyes

I know! Awfully convenient that the aliens used ZModem.

The guys who are knocking the finale of Independance Day clearly haven't watched the movie on DVD. A cut scene of alien dialogue (subtitled, naturally) shows us that the Queen was using an old version of McAfee and forgot to update her definitions.

I agree with Proto, it's just utter shit, not even worth watching for humourous reasons. Camp should at least mean the film is funny in some way.

Camp is how the actors play it, not what the producers/directors do as an afterthought when their shit bombs.
