It comes on Adult Swim. There are only six episodes but I'd definitely say its the best anime I've ever seen. The show makes almost no sense but what little plot and sense I do get out of it is great and the animation is fantastic.

Bah. It's ok. I thought the plot was more than a little confusing toward the end. Although the references to South Park and Lupin III were interesting.

If you're looking for a good weird-funny anime, Excel Saga is better. More references, more jokes, and no barely-present-but-still-there coming of age storyline.

Ya the Lupin and South park was awsome. Especially the lupin. I actually like the coming of age backdrop to the quasi-plot though.

I'll definitely check out excel saga though. Is the animation the same style?

Okay. I saw the South Park joke. But could someone explain where the Lupin joke came in? (I don't watch Lupin, so I wouldn't pick up on it)

When Haruko was on the bed and the dad jumped at her and the boxing glove spring thing hit him. Thats directly from the opening of Lupin III. It would've been impossible to spot unless you watch Lupin III.

I know what you mean. its like they probed my mind and made a show about my dreams.

I can't find the DVD's for it any where. I don't like to shop online, so i need to order it.

There are two 2 episode DVDs for 25 bucks each. They dont even have 5 and 6 on DVD yet. :(

I just saw the english version of episode 6 for the first time about 3 mintues ago. I liked that they made Ta say just "I love you", instead of "I'm in love with you". That scene is the best part of the whole series in my opinion.

Also, the dad is dressed as Lupin, and even mentions the different jacket that he wore in his movie.

Anyway, Excel Saga is a different animation style. Fewer pastels and what have you.

Which episode was that in? I think i missed it.

Black Flag
Aug 22nd, 2003, 08:55 AM
Yeah, I saw that one. Where he was asking his son if he liked the original red jacket more than the Castle of Cagliostro green jacket.

The One and Only...
Aug 22nd, 2003, 12:40 PM
Didn't he also mention that even Mr. (Monkey?) agrees that the green jacket is the correct one? Is that a real person?

CaptainBubba
Aug 22nd, 2003, 01:49 PM
Ya I forgot about that jacket stuff. Its in episode 5, the one that also has the South Park parody.

Adult swim in aus is showing Tenchi Muyo Orphen and Trigun. The first two i like but i think tri gun sucks..

What are you, gay?

The One and Only...
Aug 23rd, 2003, 04:28 PM
Trigun does suck. I find it horribly boring. FLCL and Cowboy Bebop make Trigun look like shit.

Ninjavenom
Aug 23rd, 2003, 05:10 PM
If anything, that can be chalked up to bad voice acting. I loved the show when all i had were a few fansubs from grokster, but when it came on CN i did find it less interesting. That doesn't make it a bad show, by any means, but the american voice acting is pretty wooden. Wolfwood's death was so gay because of the voicework. :(

Trigun gets way too preachy and gay near the end.

ItalianStereotype
Aug 23rd, 2003, 06:31 PM
Trigun tried to change way too many times. at first, Vash was goofy and only hinted at his abilities as a gunman. after a while, he became a hardass and the show started getting good, but then they just let it slip and Vash became a pussy.

there's no excuse for liking Tenchi Muyo though, it causes terminal cases of gay.

CaptainBubba
Aug 23rd, 2003, 07:40 PM
Which came first, Trigun or Rurouni Kenshin? Because one copied the others style. Both of them have the exact same "I'm an innocent and friendly wanderer who at the same time is invincible in combat" theme going.

If you want to play it like that, every anime is a ripoff of Speed Racer and/or Ranma 1/2.

CaptainBubba
Aug 23rd, 2003, 10:34 PM
Ya, in a sense, but those two are so damn simmilar. The only real difference is that one is in 19th century Japan and one is in the future. Vash and Kenshin even sound and act the exact same.

Have you ever seen samurai X

Its about kenshin when he was batosai.

Cool and gory

I only watched the first 3 episodes, but it seemed pretty good. What was the southpark reference?

And I heard Excel Saga was good, but what's it about?

You must be one hell of a blind fucker to not notice the HUGE ANIMATION SHIFT from typical anime, to SOUTH PARK >: >:

Or perhaps that had something to do with the South Park reference being in episode five, and not 1, 2, or 3. Stupid.

Anyway, Excel Saga is about an organization called ACROSS that intends to conquer the world, but is starting off small by trying to simply conquer the city that the organization is based in. Each episode of the show features something different; one episode is about bowling, one is about Colombian rebels, and yet another is about mountain climbing disasters.

I don't know how else to describe it, suffice to say the result is a lot of bizarre humor. And I enjoy it.

I hate Ranma 1/2 so fucking much :(

On FLCL, I don't see how this is funny. Maybe I'm not 'otaku' enough to 'get it'

I don't think they really wanted it to be funny; I think they just wanted an anime that nobody "got" so that they could scoff at everyone else for "not getting it". Or maybe I'm just being cynical.

Incidentally, I haven't seen any Ranma before. Why does everyone hate that one?

Actually, a lot of people I know love it to death. I don't know why either. It's not funny, it's poorly drawn, and it bores me to shit.

EDIT: Thought you were talking about FLCL. Oh well, I still felt like posting this.

Heres why I like it:

1. The style: Its really unique and fun to watch even when its hard to tell whats going on. Sort of like an animated piece of art.

2. The themes: The show, beneath the sub-par science fiction plot, is really about being a kid in a world full of and run by adults. I like watching Naota try to deal with his brother's girlfriend using him as a replacement boy, and Haruko playfully trying to seduce him, all when hes only 12 years old.

3. The music: All done by the Japense band, "The Pillows". It really complements the show, especially the "I think I Can" song in episode 6.

4. Voice acting: In both the Japenese and American version its perfect. I couldn't imagine a better dad, Haruko, or Naota.

Meh. I just don't care for it because I went in expecting it to be this funny/weird romp, and not an artsy, coming-of-age story. An anime version of the Breakfast Club, if you will.

Also, the guys that make the Adult Swim cards made a crack about it being better than Excel Saga. Of course, that's coming from the same network that calls DBZ "the best action cartoon on the planet."

The One and Only...

I think FLCL is better than Excel Saga. Also, many of those cards are written by people at the message boards, if I recall...

Perhaps. But then again, what do you know? You don't even watch Lupin III. What kind of a human being doesn't watch Lupin III? A crummy one, that's what kind.

Also, here's my breakdown of your list:

1. The style: I agree. The only time I can really enjoy a show is when my attention span is being worn away by absolute confusion, blending into ennui.

2. The themes: BORING. Also, if I wanted to see an anime where a young boy is playfully seduced by an older woman, that would limit my choices to nearly every anime ever made.

3. The music: Bah. I admit that the end theme was stuck in my head the other day, but music is just a peripheral.

4. Voice acting: Meh. Another minor piece. Plus, it's hard to imagine a dub without either David Lucas or Wendee Lee. Or both.

Ya, but does he fall in love with her in every anime? And does playful usually consist of shooting him in the face and making out with a robotic version of his father to make him jealous?

And the music is AWSOME. >:

But at least we both agree that Lupin III is great. Theres something. :)

Bah. What the hell was going on with the robot father? Did she do it with the real dad, or what? And then there was the riddle of an ending...

CaptainBubba
Aug 25th, 2003, 11:51 PM
She couldn't use the real dad's head for channeling stuff so she stuffed him in a closet and replaced him with a robot who she was using as a massager and making out with to make Naota jealous .

The only reason she ever came on to anyone was so she could use them as a portal for her objects and eventually Atomsk. She felt bad for doing it to Naota though, because he was just a kid and actually got attachted to her, which I thought was sweet.

The end was that Atomsk went to another world and Haruko followed him. :/

They were gonna make a movie where she comes back and insanity ensues but didn't for whatever reason. :(

What the hell was up with that? She fucked his dad? Isn't she like, 16?

Oh wait, the legal age in japan is 13, sorry :rolleyes

That's still young

She didn't? Then what about that scene in that one episode when Taco or whatever the fuck his name is walks into a room and she's saying something like "stick it in" and then some weird shit happens like a red dot appears on his head.

In the same episode, a bunch of those girls in that gigantic satelite thing get really bad nosebleeds. I read somewhere that when girls get bad nosebleeds in animes, that means they're horny. Wtf?

CaptainBubba
Aug 26th, 2003, 12:12 AM
Well they don't show them fucking. And that was the robot at that time, so if they were fucking then it was more like she was using a mechanical real doll than fucking.

Nosebleeds mean someones horny, yeah. My best guess for that one would be that they're turned on by Naota trying to save the city? I dunno. Its pretty fucked up. thats half the charm of it. :/

Ah, a dutch husband, then.

My theory on the nosebleed scene was that when Naota produced that guitar from his head, the show was alluding to it being a phalic symbol (again), and thus all the girls had nosebleeds upon seeing his huge instrument.

I heard the exact same explanation for that scene from someone else. The japanese are really creative with their symbolism. :rolleyes

That would make sense, since he talks about how she shouldn't be so rough and how it comes out easier if she doesn't force it. :/

Plus while its coming out it looks like a big long red snake.
