I'm curious what has convinced Fox that Arnold is anything more than a "novelty" candidate.....

From the Drudge Report:

FOXNEWS ORDERS AN END TO WORD-PLAYS ON SCHWARZENEGGER MOVIES; SERIOUS CANDIDATE, SERIOUS COVERAGE
Sun Aug 24 2003 16:10:31 ET

Fox News Channel senior vice president John Moody has ordered an end to Schwarzenegger movie puns in news rotations, according to a report set for Monday release.

"Total Recall," "The Governator," and "Running Man" may be but a a few of the never-ending examples on-air Schwarzenegger cuties - but Moody's had enough.

NYT media watcher Jim Rutenberg is preparing to root out a memorandum posted recently in the Fox News computer system: "The urge may seem irresistible to play off Arnold Schwarzenegger's acting career," Moody wrote. "Resist it. Otherwise the effect is often to belittle the candidacy of the front-runner for one of the most important offices in the U.S., and that's not fair and balanced. No more references to 'Conan,' 'Terminator,' and 'Kindergarten Cop' as shorthand for the candidate.... Certainly don't suggest he is part of a 'circus' or lump him in with novelty candidates" like Gary Coleman... Ask yourself if your clever turn of phrase is suggesting that Schwarzenegger's candidacy isn't a serious one. That's exactly the case his political opponents want to press. We need to play it down the middle."

Fox is the only one of the three major cable networks so far to draft such a policy, reports Rutenberg.

John J. Stack, the Fox News Channel vice president for news gathering said of Schwarzenegger, "People do recognize him from his films, but he is now undertaking a very serious mission and we want people to be told all about it."

Besides, he said, California voters, faced with huge economic problems, are by now getting bored with the frivolous aspects of the campaign.

"The circus component is starting to subside. People have gotten their yuks about the porn star and the sitcom representative," he said, "but I think people want to get down to dollars and cents."

FOXNEWS ORDERS AN END TO WORD-PLAYS ON COLEMAN TV SERIES AND BIZARRE ACTIONS FOLLOWING DEMISE OF CAREER; SERIOUS CANDIDATE, SERIOUS COVERAGE
Sun Aug 24 2003 16:10:31 ET

Fox News Channel senior vice president John Moody has ordered an end to Gary Coleman related short-insane-has been jokes, according to a report set for Monday release.

"Wachu recalling about, Willis?," "The Short List for Governor," and "Was he the one who held up a filling station?" may be but a a few of the never-ending examples on-air Coeman cuties - but Moody's had enough.

NYT media watcher Jim Rutenberg is preparing to root out a memorandum posted recently in the Fox News computer system: "The urge may seem irresistible to play off Gary Colemans acting career, and lack there-of" Moody wrote. "Resist it. Otherwise the effect is often to belittle the candidacy of a candidate for one of the most important offices in the U.S., and that's not fair and balanced. No more references to 'The Black Leprichaun,' 'Mr. Somewhat bigger than Emmanuel Lewis,' and 'Conrad Bain's Human Beer Coaster' as 'shorthand' for the candidate.... Certainly don't suggest he is part of a 'circus' or 'side show', lump him in with novelty candidates or charge a quarter to see him" like Arnold Schwarzenegger... Ask yourself if your clever turn of phrase is suggesting that Coelman's candidacy isn't a serious one. That's exactly the case his political opponents want to press. We need to play it down the middle."

Fox is the only one of the three major cable networks so far to draft such a policy, reports Rutenberg, while the WB has an internal memo stating "Give the little freak hell. It's hysterical and he asked for it."

John J. Stack, the Fox News Channel vice president for news gathering said of Coleman, "People do recognize him from his TV show, But they can't remember which crimes he committed as opposed to Dana Plato and the other, taller black kid. But he is now undertaking a very serious mission and we want people to be told all about it."

Besides, he said, supressing mirth, California voters, faced with huge economic problems, are by now getting bored with the frivolous aspects of the campaign and need to concider serious issues such as how much money is being flushed down the drain and how soon a similar amount of money can be flsuhed down it again.

"The circus component is starting to subside. People have gotten their yuks about the porn star and the steroid swollen nazi eugenics experiment," he said, "And I think that's pretty unfair and tars other Porn stars and genitically enhanced, cigar smoking, Kennedy humpers with the flithy brush of politics. We at Fox should be above all that , which is we strive to be the diving board over the cess pool of television news coverage."

Taco BellĀ® Poll Shows Californians Are Hungry For Schwarzenegger, Bustamante

Irvine, Calif., August 26, 2003 -Taco Bell Corp. announces the first installment of its Taco Poll results with former frontrunner Arnold Schwarzenegger leading with 54 percent of votes with his crunchy beef taco. The Grilled Stuft Burrito holds a strong second on the menu with 43 percent of votes for Lieutenant Governor Cruz Bustamante and the remaining 133 candidates; followed by Governor Gray Davis, represented by a chicken soft taco, with three percent. After overwhelming response from consumers to include Cruz in the Company’s in-store gubernatorial Taco Poll and strong support from national poll results, Taco Bell also announced Californians can now take a big bite out of Bustamante … as a Chalupa.

Beginning last Thursday, consumers could visit more than 1,000 California restaurants to “put their vote where their mouth is” for their favorite gubernatorial candidate. Californians “bought votes” simply by purchasing selected Taco Bell menu items. A crunchy beef taco counts as one vote for Schwarzenegger, a soft chicken taco counts as a vote for not recalling Davis and any Grilled Stuft Burrito shows support for any of the other candidates. Now, starting today, consumers who want show support for Bustamante can choose the Chalupa.

“Californians are asking for Bustamante and we’re delivering him - as a Chalupa,” said Greg Creed, chief marketing officer, Taco Bell Corp. “We are very pleased with the Taco Poll voter turn out and we hope this level of participation carries through to the upcoming election.”

Customers can “Think Outside The Bun” and vote at participating Taco BellĀ® restaurants in California through the day before the official election. Voters can monitor the Taco Poll results, which are tallied and released weekly every Tuesday, online at www.tacobell.com. To ensure fairness to all candidates, products results will be calculated based on the incremental number of items sold.
