View Full Version : Anime worth watching?

Anime (imo) is often such a mixed bag... I'm tired of having my feelings hurt. I've seen a lot of the most popular movies and prefer adult themes. By that I don't mean hentai, just nothing Wiffles approved (no offense ^_~). Any titles or series (of reasonable length, like no more than 20 episodes) you guys could recommend that are decent would not only be supercool but would also make my day
a-ok.

All the best ones are short series or movies. I reccomend these ones especially, though they're all well known and you've probably seen them. :(
1.FLCL (Furri Kurri, or Fooly Cooly)
2.Blue Submarine No.6
3.Akira
4.Grave of the Fireflies
5.Rorouni Kenshin (This is more than 20 episodes)

Actually Akira is the only one of those I've seen. I now have direction. You sir, are a gentleman and a scholar.

For movies, you can't go wrong with any of Hayao Miyazaki's films, especiallly Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away.
For series, you can try the "cowboy" animes:
- Cowboy Bebop
- Trigun
- Outlaw Star
All of those series are 26 episodes long each. Those are the only ones I can think of right now. :/

"Ninja Scroll" is worth a watch. But if you ever see a "Ranma 1/2" video, I highly advocate not watching it. Other then that I would have to go the the previously mentioned videos.

Serial Experiments: Lain is a great drama anime. Not alot of action, just alot of crazy stuff that'll make you think...

Lain is boring
But definatly go with Trigun and Hellsing. I wasn't a big fan of Outlaw Star, but everyone else loves it, so :(

I thought Kenshin was pretty boring, up until that kid with no emotions showed up. :-\
A lot of people refer to blood as gore, but if you want some nice gut-spills and head rips, see if you can obtain a copy of the 3-part Genocyber OVA series. It's definitely worth watching. All the other stuff mentioned here is good too, especially the Miyazaki flicks. Incredible art and storytelling, and Mononoke had animation smooth enough to rival Akira's.

My favorite anime series EVER is "The Vision of Escaflowne". You can't go wrong with that one. And IGNORE that crappy shit that was on Fox a couple years ago, they butchered it to hell.
Some of my other favorites include:
Cowboy Bebop
El Hazard
The Irresponsible Captain Tyler
Trigun
Bakuretsu Hunter (Sorceror Hunter)
As for movies, most of the ones mentioned here are excellent. Although I always thought that Blue Submarine No. 6 looked like crap.

Maybe Trigun is a rip off of Kenshin, I don't know or give a shit. All I Know is that Trigun is way better.

Allthough considering i live in aus everyone else see's it all first. I thought trigun sucked... As for movies i liked Macross and ghost in the shell. Also a series called Crying Freeman was pretty descent too.

First off. FLCL sucks. The series doesn't make any damn sense!
Here are some good animes:
Tetsusawan no Atomu ( Astro Boy): First anime series EVER MADE
Kimba the white Lion: not much when it comes to dialogue because it's pretty goofy, but you have to consider that it was MADE specifically for children. It's cute and has some memorable characters
Gigantor: who can disagree with me here? that's right.. no one. Because Gigantor RULES!
A Chinese Ghost Story The Tsui Hark Animation- I didn't like it as much as the live action ones that Tsui Hark made before, but still, it's an anime that is AT LEAST worth your rental dollar.
Metropolis- Excellent film, another Tezuka production, but not technically, since it was made after he died.
Urusei Yatsura: A bit cheesy, but fun to watch anyway
Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend- Once you get past the parts of twisted and disgusting graphic sexual scenes, this actually has an interesting plot.

That pretty much sums it up. The story was god awful. What else is there? The animation itself? Hell, half the time, it was so dark, I couldn't make out one shovel-faced character from another.
Plus, there was way too much severed head-holding.
Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend- Once you get past the parts of twisted and disgusting graphic sexual scenes, this actually has an interesting plot.
Really, you can't go wrong with tentacle porn.

It would be even more interesting if it made any sense. However, the second episode provides an interesting and rare glimpse into Hitler's true motives with his nazi tentacle rape machine harnessing the power of unwilling virgins.
I didn't like Metropolis at all. :/
Just saw Studio Ghibli's "The Cat Returns". Defnitely a far cry from "Spirited Away", but still entertaining sorta.

The worst thing about Bloodlust: The DVD only has a barely audible English track. >:
The first VHD wasn't groundbreaking, but it was enjoyable. It had a futuristic world that meshed with a century gothing style, that made for a very interesting world. The creatures and story were good enough to make you enjoy the whole time you were watching, and the animation had that classic gritty feel to it that I pretty much require of my animes. None of this computer-clean pretty-as-shit stuff like Princess Mononoke or whatever.
But Bloodlust REALLY ignored all of that. It's not even connected to the first movie, and the world seems more like a post-apocolyptic future, rather that one that combines technology with an older, Victorian feel. They also placed too much focus on a group of hunters who you could give two shits about. People wanted to see D, and we get a group of people so forgettable, I can't even remember what happened to them, or what they looked like, or what purpose they served.
