No, fucking, way.

That is the most badass thing ever. They even listened to all the fans at the ucb board, and are doing the whole season instead of best of.

About damn time.

Only four episodes? Poo. Better than nothing, but I would have preferred all the episodes.

As for questions, it's been so long since I've seen UCB, I can't even remember what segments were in each episode, let alone what episodes were from the first season, let alone being able to remember most of the episodes.

Jixby, is there any legal reasons why they never show reruns of UCB? I would have figured that they might boost sales of the DVD by reminding people (and showing new folks) how funny it was.

I remember Comedy Central saying they didn't have the rights to show the episodes any more, but I think the UCB said it was bullshit.

Maybe they want to deprive us of UCB so that the demand for it will be greater.

Aug 28th, 2003, 10:18 PM
That might be true if it wasn't for the fact that I don't think enough people have even heard of UCB for that to work at all. People have to know about it before the demand can go up. Maybe it will drive up the demand among fans, but juding from most UCB fans I know, most fans would buy it whether or not the episodes were being shown again on TV.

Wasn't season 1 more than four episodes?

It's the same thing they did with Strangers With Candy season 1. They included all the episodes but only put commentary on some of them. But it sounds like they'll be throwing in a lot of extras too, so this will be a great set. In all honesty, they could just release all the season 1 episodes without any extras at all and I'd still buy 'em. The show was just too good, and like SWC, way ahead of its time.

Ahead of their time? The humor they produce now is the kind of humor that will only be appreciated years from now? Are my kids going to huddle around the episodes, laugh and say shit like, "THIS IS A CLASSIC!" ? Well, Roger? ARE THEY?

You're so full of shit. I'll kick your ass you poser.

You know what would be a good extra? They're TV spot from an early episode of Premium Blend (I think that was the show). Anyone remember that? They were talking about the keys to a comedy sketch.

We're already huddling around and pointing out episode moments to people who haven't seen them and saying "THIS IS A CLASSIC!" And if you're kids don't do the same, you had better look into euthanasia.

Now run along and go paint another old NES, Nerman.

Amazon.com lists the new Lewis Black release as another comedy cd called "The Rules of Enragement".

I will certainly be getting that, along with the Strangers DVDs and possibly the UCB. I haven't seen enough of that yet, so Rog, when it comes out, I'm coming over to your place to watch some of it. If I like, I buy.

But since some people said UCB was even better, I'm figuring multiple brain orgasms. :eek

UCB is without contest the funniest sketch comedy to ever be shown on T.V. The only complaint I could make about it is that unlike SWC, which is consistantly funny at an above average level, UCB is more of a major hit and miss type of humor. Poop on a stick defense, the Hole in the sheet, and the sketch with the two crack head/pimp businessmen would be good examples of hits, whereas things like the paranoid weed dealer were pretty dull.

When all is said and done its still my favorite show ever.

Am I the only one who remembers UCB on Premium Blend? It was when Jim Bruer hosted it.

I remember them talking about the art of the spit-take, and how in the future, water will not be plentiful enough to spit out for jokes. So they showed how it would happen in future comedy skits, by stuffing a cloth into their mouth, drinking the water, and spitting out the cloth.

There was other stuff in it too. It was funny. :(

I remeber seeing them on some other comedy show, comic cabana maybe?? but I think it might have been that same thing.

Personaly UCB is my favorite, I like it better than Mr. Show.

And what wasnt funny about desert fox special ops captian bubba? Even some of the weakest UCB moments are still pretty damn funny.

I don't get whatever channel has Mr.Show. :( I've heard its funny.

UCB is still hilarious most of the time, I just didn't find that episode very good. The scenes seemed to drag on and nothing was really funny in it. It was "ok", but I have high expectations whenever I watch UCB so it seemed sub par compared to their other skits. And the "Sweet Home Alabama" part was just kinda annoying.

Jixby Phillips
Sep 6th, 2003, 08:13 PM
As weak as that particular sketch is, that whole episode is fantastic. I think that's what makes UCB so great, that even though there are some weak sketches, they work together with the great sketches in creating something bigger and better than any of the sketches themselves.

CaptainBubba
Sep 6th, 2003, 11:33 PM
Honestly Its been 3 years since I've seen an episode, so the rest of it might have been excellent. I just remember that sticking out to me as bad. Which is saying alot since I saw every episode and that is the only thing I remember as being less than very funny.

There apparantly was a three month break in the middle of season 2, and the rest of season 2 and season 3 aired in continuous 1-week intervals. Of course, if Comedy Central wants to be a pain in the ass about it, they'll release the last two seasons in separate sets to earn more money from it. :(

Jixby Phillips
Sep 24th, 2003, 04:43 PM
It'll probably be just 10 episodes.

2 seasons were produced. They aired as technically one season. The break occured durring episodes 208 & 209, the cult episodes, I guess to simulate a cliff-hanger. production for season 3, I asume, went on durring the break and they were able to come back with the rest of the run of the series.

I hope for SWC Season 2 they'll able to do a few more commentaries then just four freaking episodes. Seriously, I got the first set and the commentaries were insightful but a bit slim...and where's Greg Hollimon? Come on, the man has got to do an episode or two.

it's too bad there's nothing great in terms of sketch on tv now (we've lost ucb, mr. show, and the state). but this site (http://www.spidermonkeyfiasco.com) is tiding me over til the ucb dvd. they're updating with new sketches every tuesday, and i like the way the sketches link (although it reminds me more of the state than ucb).

yeah, it is a kind of weird name. having "silly" in the title just breeds a feeling of triviality. which is kind of the opposite of the trend. "upright citizens brigade" and "the state" for example, are both titles that make the shows seem uber-iportant.

but of course, sketch comedy IS trivial. so whatever. i don't mind the name so much.

sketchrules
Oct 17th, 2003, 12:03 PM
oh yeah, and i love the lonely island too. it's not really my thing - it's more of a twisted sitcom format - requires a MUCH longer attention span. but, hey, for some reason, brooke shields is in one of their shows.

I don't know if this was said- I'm too lazy to read all the posts, but didn't the cast of UCB (or at least some of them) move in this order?

The State(MTV) --> Viva Variety(CC) -->UCB(CC) --> Reno 911 (CC)?

Protoclown

I watched that Lonely Island video about the teeth whitener a while ago and I remember it being funny as shit. I'll have to check out the rest soon. I do recall the quality of the video wasn't that good though. Are there better versions out there somewhere?

sketchrules
Oct 17th, 2003, 12:56 PM
spooky, you're close. viva variety was a spin-off of a state sketch. and much of the state cast is now in reno 911. the state cast also made a movie called "wet hot american summer," which featured ucb member amy poehler. but other than that, there is no connection between the state and ucb.

as for higher quality videos of thelonelyisland.com stuff, i haven't seen any. but the www.spidermonkeyfiasco.com videos are pretty decent quality. so if video quality is what you're looking for definately check out spider monkey. as for the quality of the comedy, you will have to judge for yourself.

search for "sketch comedy" in google and you'll get some pretty lame sites. It seems like everybody thinks they can do sketch comedy.

I believe sketch comedy is a dying genre. It's either hit or miss. A sketch is good or bad. Generally bad.

That's why the State or Mr. Show redefined the genre...if a sketch sucked, which they often did...at least they tied in to the show and made it clever. Alas, all we're left with is a struggling SNL that relies on viewers wanting to see their favorite celebs act "silly" and MADtv which I just don't know about anymore.

I wish people would realize this. I'm sick of people filming stupid commercial spoofs, parodies, and lame sketches and then throwing them together and calling it a TV show.

Be clever. But be funny. What are you going to do?

Always,
InAHuff

sketchrules

i've never heard it expressed better!

the sketch shows of the mid nineties were born out of long form improv formats like the harold, which emphasized reincorporation of ideas. unfortunately, on television, people who tune into sketch are looking to satisfy their short attention spans. they want to see some characters and situtations that they can meet and understand quickly, and then they can get to the punchline immediately and they never have to think about it again. that doesn't leave much room for the innovative formats of ucb, the state, mr. show etc. - they don't sell the week-to-week stories of a sitcom, and they focus too little on the appeal of the short attention span. for a network, they just fall into a nether region they can't qualify, and that scares them away.

that's why i like groups like "olde english (http://www.oldeenglish.org)" and "spider monkey (http://www.spidermonkeyfiasco.com)." they seem to be embracing the joy of linking sketches and reincorporating ideas. it's more evident in spider monkey than olde english, but it's present in both. and they're both doing a pretty good job, considering they seem to be doing it without a budget. that gives me hope for the future of the format.

I have had it since saturday. It totally kicks ass. Almost through the whole thing set already,

There's a lot of really great stuff on this two disc set, including the original pilot that I'd never seen until now. It's different than the seasons that would follow in a number of ways. First, it has a shot-on-video look that's indistinguishable from any number of other sketch comedy shows. Second, the pilot was taped in front of an audience, which rapidly became grating. The material should be familiar, at least to anyone who waded through the first season before giving the pilot a peek. Aside from the opening golf revenge sketch and a few scattered gags, the remainder of the pilot found its way into a few different episodes, including the "ugly" "woman", preparation for revenge against the bus driver, and the 'Toad' tale that would become the central focus of one episode without any editing or alteration whatsoever.

The pilot is wierd. I totally agree with this when they say it is indistinguishable form other sketch comedy shows. It is amazing how unique the real show became with the absence of a laugh track, better production, and the background music.

get this dvd.
