Not dead - there will always be real punks. The scene was just hopelessly diluted once it became a fad and all the teenyboppers decided it was cool.

I hate all punks. They're like goths, but with more enthusiasm.

if they were all such individuals then people wouldn't have a stereotype for them :/

This is what I think:
A punk is a nonconformist for the sake of blatant nonconformism. Their only message is "fuck organized society and the people who want to bring us down," even though they're not really headed anywhere and aren't accomplishing anything with their attitudes (other than maintaining the number of punks like themselves and influencing hordes of posers who are even worse than the real punks).
Disagreements? Additions? Clarifications?

For my summer job at the public defenders, I would wear my pink pin stripe pants suit and bright pink sparkly nail polish. I felt so punk.

A lot of the time, yeah. But more real punks are actually unique than most "edgy" groups, they don't buy trendy stuff and they get their styles from a lot of different sources. As far as the attitude goes, it's not really about being totally individual, it's about not conforming to society's status quo, whether or not they're individuals in doing it. Otherwise, they'd try so hard not to be like each other that there wouldn't be such a strong scene.
