Yeah basically the studio wanted to cut down on alot of the blood and slashing, but gave the excuse that it was too long hoping they would cut some of the gore. But Maddsen and Tarantino basically said fuck that, I'm glad that they didn't cut anything.

This movie is Tarantino giving props to all the ancient Kung Fu movies out there; die hard fans will see many references and similarities.
I've also recently heard a rumor that the film was split into two parts in order to fool the MPAA. I don't know why, but they wanted to give the film an NC-17 rating, but the movie was split up as to fool them. It's probably not true, as I've read the script, seen several trailers, and nothing looks too violent or explicit.
Personally, I think Part II is going to be much better, but we'll see how this one does.

Tarantino's 'Kill Bill': A Pulp Fiction Sequel by Elvis Costello
Success is a double-edged sword as we all know. Tomorrow, Miramax releases one of the worst films in its history, a misbegotten comedy called "Duplex" that stars Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore in a pale rip-off of "Meet the Parents."
On the other hand, three weeks from tomorrow the company will finally give us Quentin Tarantino's "Kill Bill: Volume 1." I've seen this much-anticipated film and I can tell you that it is absolutely brilliant, a real tour de force.
And it raises interesting questions: Why can Miramax only make this kind of film? Why are they unable to make high-concept Hollywood films? "Duplex" falls in the dubious category of "Kate & Leopold," "Serendipity," "A View from the Top" and "Bounce."
Oy! If only someone knew the answer.
But let's address "Kill Bill," which is the story of a character called The Bride (Uma Thurman), a hit woman who avenges her newlywed husband's bloody murder at the altar. The enemy is Bill, her former lover and employer and his squad of vicious killers known as the Deadly Viper Assassination Squad, or DiVAS. They are played by Daryl Hannah, Lucy Liu, Vivica A. Fox and Michael Madsen.
You know this is a movie that's going to be a flash point for all the cinema-geek-Internet-whatever writers. Tarantino is a cult figure. His every move is dissected by these 'experts.' God love them, to have the time and interest for this minutiae. Some want him to fail. Some want him to succeed. Me? I really liked "Jackie Brown," so go figure. I have not watched the special edition DVD of "Pulp Fiction" over and over in slow-motion.
Three-and-a-half years ago Tarantino surfaced from a long absence on the scene during Oscar weekend 2000. He'd been someplace in the Caribbean for a while and was with a mysterious woman whom he'd met down there. He was supposedly working on a World War II movie. For some reason I can't remember, we were sitting on a piano bench at a party. All of a sudden he told me he was working on a script called "Kill Bill" that would star Warren Beatty and Uma Thurman. The rest is history.
Eventually Beatty, who I guess couldn't figure out exactly what was going on, dropped out of the project. He was replaced by "Kung Fu" star David Carradine.
I remember seeing Tarantino chewing the ears off of Thurman and her husband Ethan Hawke at the Miramax pre-Oscar bash that year -- almost to the point of distraction. In fact, I wrote about it in this column. He was so excited about "Kill Bill" and Thurman's participation that he ignored the skits being performed on stage by that year's Oscar nominees.
Ironically, this February, Tarantino and Thurman may be asked to perform similar sketches.
I will admit I'm not a fanatic expert on the subject of samurai movies, 'grind house' pictures, spaghetti westerns or Japanese anime. (The latter all looks like "Speed Racer" to me.) Until I read the extensive press notes for "Kill Bill," I assumed a "duck press" was something served a la orange or with plum sauce. But I do know that "Kill Bill, Volume 1" is the hippest thing I've seen on screen since "Pulp Fiction."
From the opening credits (which are in Japanese) to the big finale in a place called "The House of Blue Leaves" (sorry John Guare), "Kill Bill" is full of visual knockouts. There are set piece homages to Tarantino's favorite Japanese films, which are going to be parodied and copied as slavishly as "Pulp Fiction."
It's "Crouching Tiger" and "The Matrix," mixed together and served with hot sauce. What a meal these three films will make some day at a revival house!
What surprised me most about "Kill Bill," though, was Thurman. She's had an iffy movie career, with some good stuff ("Pulp Fiction," "Dangerous Liaisons," "Hysterical Blindness") and some famously bad stuff ("Gattaca," "The Avengers," "Even Cowgirls Get the Blues").
In a way, she's perfect Tarantino material -- someone we think of as a star whose resume is littered with junk. Tarantino taps into that very insightfully. "Kill Bill" sort of marries these two ideas together for Thurman. Now she'll be a star like never before. Her performance is just stunning, a really glorious piece of physical, witty exertion.
I'll tell you more about "Kill Bill" as its release date (Oct. 10) approaches. But these were the impressions I was left with after the screening: that it rocked, that the violence and spurting blood was cartoon-like fun, that Lucy Liu was the best she's ever been.
I also thought that "Kill Bill" succeeded on every level that "Charlie's Angels" didn't. And that I really wanted to see Part II as soon as possible (I'm told it's not finished yet), but that I was happy there was a break.
Oh yeah, and one more thing: The soundtrack is simply amazing.
----------------------
well... if some "i don't seem to know shit about movies even though i'm a movie critic what's japanese anime again?" non-fanboy guy like this likes it... then i'm sure i'll love it.

listen: this is how much it will rock:
Uma Thurman's character, The Bride, hunts down five different people in order to kill them and each of these characters resides in a "world" influenced by a certain genre of film. The five "worlds" are(and this is the best here):
-A Blaxploitation/Rape-Revenge film
-A Shaw Brothers style chop-sockey film
-A Japanese LADY SNOWBLOOD/Yakuza type of film
-An anime sequence
-And a spaghetti western
if this doesnt get you going, tacked on the fact it's QUENTIN TARANTINO, i question who you are as a person, and are you happy with your life.

Wow. I just saw it. It was fucking incredible. I mean, seriously, ridiculously good. I am DEFINITELY seeing this again on the big screen. I had high expectations and it surpassed them all. I'm going to reserve final judgement until I've seen the whole thing, but I think this has a VERY good chance of being my newfound favorite Tarantino movie.
It was clear to me though (and disappointing) that a large number of the audience didn't "get" it. A lot of people seemed bothered and confused when they bleeped out the Bride's name. We're not meant to know it at this point in the story. In fact, it may never be clearly revealed. But for those of us who know it or have figured it out (and it's easy enough to find on the net), certain lines of dialogue might take on a different sort of meaning ("Trix are for kids").
Also a lot of people thought the showers of blood that erupted forth every time a katana sliced through somebody were hilarious. And many other people were mocking how "fake" it was. Obviously these people have never seen a single samurai movie in their stupid little lives, because those blood geysers were wonderfully true to the genre. The choice to have the epic fight in the restaurant in black-and-white was brilliant, it felt just like an oldschool samurai movie.
Immediately after the conclusion of the O-Ren Ishii fight, these two guys up in the front of the theater walked out in a huff and when they got to the back door to leave the theater they yelled out "This movie is BULLSHIT!" I was utterly shocked that anyone could react that way to the movie. Obviously they were idiots who have absolutely NO idea of the types of films this paid brilliant homage to.
I fucking love this movie. Absolutely brilliant.
Spooky
Oct 11th, 2003, 07:25 AM
Yes, it was amazing. I rather enjoyed near the beginning. "Coffee?"
:lol
Anywhom, when the movie started going full swing, my jaw just dropped. I couldn't believe how great it all was, and it had such a "cult" feel. You must all see it. There wasn't a second of the movie that didn't hold my full attention.
Alot of the people in the theatre were laughing at things that were NOT supposed to be funny, as proto said. The blood was a throwback to ninja and samurai films, as well as most anime, but then again, all of his movies are inspired by such, just this film made it 300% more obvious.
It's sad however, this won't do good until word spreads. This WILL NOT be an instant-hit blockbuster, ESPECIALLY because it's October, so it's going against several horror flicks, in the Halloween season. There was maybe 5 people to see Kill Bill, whereas "House of the Dead" was sold out. This will reach cult-status, above all.
I recommend it. Highly.

"The blood was a throwback to ninja and samurai films, as well as most anime, but then again, all of his movies are inspired by such, just this film made it 300% more obvious. "
And that is exactly what IS funny about the film. Everything in it is reference to something else, so if you see the reference, you may find it to be hilarious. I found the film very, very funny, and if you're going to be a hard-ass about what is and isn't funny about a film then obviously you guys didn't 'get it.'

My jaw was dropped about the length of the film. To me it was like watching a Live action Anime dark comedy. From the western style credit intro to the flipped around story telling style, I give this movie a rating of 10 BONERS for Uma Thurman and her fabulous Yellow jumpsuit stained with blood...........and I'm here to fuck.

Oh, two tihngs I forgot to mention that I noticed, and don't worry, they aren't really spoilers.
since Tarentino likes to connect his movies in subtle ways, to show they're all in the same "universe", I had an eye open the whole film, and I sadly only noticed two, when I'm sure there's more.
- During "The Bride" scenes...it's the same Texas Ranger that's in "From Dusk 'till Dawn", or at least the same actor playing a similar character.
- When Uma's character is walking through the airport in Tokyo, there is a large wall-ad for "Red Apple" cigarettes, which have been used in every film Tarentino's even had a HAND in.

Summary: What a fraud!!
Kill Bill is a fraud. Terrible, terrible movie! SPOILERS
Spoilers within this post. Enter at your own risk!
I just got back from the noon showing of Kill Bill in which the theater was half full (for a noon showing, that is huge. The theater is one of the bigger ones at the Queensway in Toronto, so it will do well this weekend). What I witnessed in that 100 minutes in the theater can only be described as Tarantino's flipping of the bird to all of us as he looks in the mirror and congratulates himself on being the smartest man in the world. Straight up, Kill Bill is one of the biggest disappointments I have seen in my life. After masterpieces like Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction and other greats like True Romance, you would think that Kill Bill would live up to those lofty expectations bestowed upon it by virtue and name recognition alone. But not only has Tarantino told us all to **** off, he he has done it while laughing in our faces.
Kill Bill has all of Tarantino's quirky and weird trademarks in it. And it contains strange techniques that at first you think is simply an homage to a film genre. But in reality, what QT did here was get too cute and at the expense of artistic integrity. What we are left with is more Matrix style garbage, a 10 minute anime introduction to Lucy Lui's character, black and white photography for no reason and the bleeping out of the bride's name just because he can. All of this is looked at as being brilliant by the critics and those in similar circles because Tarantino has a free pass right now. His films have enamoured critics for 10 years now and this one is no different even though it is a shadow of the opulence that we are used to from him. To sum it up, this film is all style and has no substance. The style is there, but for what purpose? Why does he choose to do the things that he does? Is it just because he can? Or is it because he thinks he is so much more clever than the rest of us? You guys thought Matrix Reloaded was pretentious, this film might as well be the Architect meets Socrates meets Locke, meets Rouseau meets Japanese smart guy meets Marx. That is how it comes across. Pretentious doesn't even begin to describe it. There is even a blatant rip off of the burly brawl in this film right down to beings jumping up a flight of steps to come and meet the heroine.
I knew I was in trouble five minutes into the film when it just didn't feel right. You know how in Pulp you just knew you were in for something special? You just felt it with the dialogue, the acting, the soundtrack and everything that encompassed the film. Well Kill Bill has the opposite feel to it. None of that magic is present and it is just a bunch of people getting sliced and diced and maimed. There is no snappy dialogue and that is what QT is good at. Tarantino is a lyrical genius and he abandons that here and goes Wachowski Brothers on us and it just doesn't work.
I despised this film with every fibre of my body and it left me in a p***ed off and foul mood. Shame on you QT. Shame on you for starting to believe everything that was said about you. Now wipe that stupid smile off your face and go clean Harvey's shoes and polish his golf clubs. There is a lot of sychophantic baloney going on here and I thought you were bigger than that.
F or a 1 out of 10.
This is why i never talk to people about movies. Stupid opinions from people who just don't get it. At least SnakeAss got it. I didn't see anything wrong with his post, he sounded like he enjoyed it. And if the reviews so far tell me anything, this will be a million times as bloody as Lone Wolf and Cub, and as "Holy Shit!" as Riki-Oh.

Yeah, and it was on the drumset. I think Roger was making a joke.
And I didn't have a problem with people laughing at the movie, so much of it was obviously MEANT to be funny. It was the WAY people were laughing at the showing I went to, they were obviously MOCKING it. Laughing like they thought it was a ridiculously bad film. That's why I said they didn't "get it". They were laughing for all the wrong reasons. In my opinion.

This was a good fun movie. It was by no means a truly great movie though. I saw alot of style and action, but it lacked the Tarantino dialogue and plot that I loved in Pulp Fiction.
And there wasn't very good character development either. Revenge movies are supposed to truly make you sympathize with the protagonist's cause, but we learn practically nothing about the Bride. I understand that its a homage to the way old Samuri films were done, but he could do better. :/
Don't get me wrong, I liked it. I'm gonna buy the DVD and watch it again because it was cool, but I could barely tell Tarantino even made it. :(

Proto,
I'm thinking about getting the soundtrack... is most of it done by RZA? I loved the spagetti western sound of most of the stuff.
all of Tarantino's work is derivative, but the way he pulls it off is amazing. I wasn't a huge fan of his other films mostly because of subject matter but I had high expectations of this one, and I definitely was not let down in the least.
Protoclown
Oct 14th, 2003, 07:18 AM
Actually, very little of the soundtrack cd is by RZA, only like 2 or 3 tracks. Most of the music Tarantino pulled from other sources. But almost everything from the movie is there, except for a few songs...one being the music that played when the Bride was looking at the katanas, and I fucking LOVED that music.

other stuff from random places:
*The church scene was shot in the Mojave Desert outside of Lancaster, CA. Keep an eye out during this scene for a cameo by Samuel L. Jackson as a dead organ player and actor/director Bo Svenson as the preacher.
*Bill's "Deadly Viper Assassination Squad" are comprised of women bearing snake related codenames such as Black Mamba, Copperhead, Cottonmouth, and Sidewinder. These same names are given to members of the bad-guy group known as the Serpent Society, appearing in Captain America comic books.

Haven't seen it. I'm going to wait until both volumes are out on DVD.
It sounds very promising, but I've heard that having it "split" really has an affect on the response to the movies altogether. Do you think your opinion (not if it was good or bad, but your overall reaction) would be different if you got to see all three hours at once?
Protoclown
Oct 14th, 2003, 01:26 PM
Frankly at this point I'm kind of glad they split it. Because for one thing, I LOVE the anticipation. I love speculating on what's going to happen and imagining how things might turn out in my head. That's why a part of me will be slightly sad when Return of the King is finally out, because I enjoy having something like that to look foward to.
Secondly, the "end" of the movie is so beautifully put together, with the way things close out at the end of part one and then flow into the credits with the amazingly fitting music, I simply cannot imagine it continuing straight onward into part two without that break in between parts. The scenes that you see shortly before the credits roll really wouldn't have the same emotional weight if they were somewhere in the middle of a longer film.
Artisitically, I think he made a good choice. And I say that without even having seen part two.

Just came back from seeing it. So amazing. Really shows off Tarantino's ability to capture a zeitgeist, like Jackie Brown's blaxploitation atmosphere. Most of the film I was just engrossed, except for when Go-go stuck the weird-teeth guy and made a bad pun about penetrating him. So old Kung Fu movie it made me laugh. I totally agree with glow's mention of Liu's funny eye as well. I don't know if you were kidding but for some reason the imperfections really add to the film. Like Uma's kind of unconventional beauty, Jackson's afro in Pulp Fiction - it's a real talent that Tarantino is able to create these nuanced characters by casting just the right people. Ah, just excellent, totally excellent. Can't wait for part two.

And the FYI the black mamba is the worlds most deadliest snake, its poision is a nerotoxin which causes paralysis and death of brain tissue and the rest of the nervous system within seconds. In contrast, botulism, which is in your Wendy's burger or your mom's snare drum face, is a muscle tissue toxin which causes death inside of a few hours.
The last character named after this snake that I can think of was Mamba Jack Kreuger in the very good book Vertical Run.

They should release one DVD set with volume 1 & volume 2 on one disk, and then the extras on a second disk. Then they should release a barebones DVD of the complete movie edited together. Because really, to most people, I think seeing the movie edited together would just be a novelty. But on the other hand, if people didn't care about special features and felt it would be a waste to get the two-disk set, then that'd be good.
But I'm willing to bet that it doesn't happen this way. I bet that the DVDs for volume 1, volume 2, and the complete edited-together movie will all be two disks, despite the fact that the bonus material (or at least the stuff that isn't garbage to make the running time on the bonus material disk longer) won't be enough to not have just put on the same disk as the movie itself.

Movie wasn't bad. Kind of one of those movies where I didn't really like it, but it kind of grew on me. I read the script several months ago, and I can honestly say that Part II is going to fucking own the crap out of Part I. [minor spoiler]Like when she goes and trains at Pei Mei's house...good stuff.[/minor spoiler]
Some of the stuff I didn't like. [very minor part II spoiler]For example, Tarantino bleeping out her name has absolutely no significance whatsoever. I guess you can kind of say it's a bit of a joke, but overall, it serves absolutely no purpose in the movie. I think he does it just to be "retro" or "cool" or something. After all, if you've ever seen any of his interviews, he really thinks he's the best guy out there.[/minor spoiler] I don't enjoy how he does things in an attempt to be cool, yet serves no logical purpose.
I also thought the fight scenes blew. Terrible. Hack. Slash. Hack. Slash. I understand that it was sort of the premise of the movie, but I still didn't like it. The beginning fight scene was okay, but the whole House of Blue Leaves fight scene I thought was terrible.

Here in the middle of PA Kill Bill is still playing.
We have the shittiest theaters because they get very few movies. The good thing is that the movies they get play for months and you can watch good ones again.

I saw it twice, and I noticed some really funny stuff the second time.
1. Uma Thurman rips out someone's eyeball
2. There's a dead guy sticking his tongue out on the floor in that huge battle scene near the end.
I bought the soundtrack as well , and I wasn't disappointed :rock
