Well this is a surprise. I thought Square wasn't going to make anymore movies. I guess they haven't learned anything from Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within.

I might actually see this. This is one of my favorite Final Fantasy titles. :(

I'll bet it has nothing to do with FF7, despite the pictures.

So they take the best Final Fantasy ever made and sequal it into... a straight to DVD movie? I hate cutscenes bad enough as it is, now they are going to ruin my life by making what could probably be the most anticipated event in RPGs nothing but one bigass cutscene?
I know I love SquareEnix's graphics too, but I really don't play games to "find out if those two characters ever got together."

I didn't read the article on IGN, but there is a very good chance that this could be a DVD for the PS2 only, allowing interactive options as were planned for a PS2-only The Spirits Within DVD that was never made. It would include simple things like changing the camera angles and zooming in/out, and more.
Personally, I was always against a FF7 sequel. I felt that while X allowed for a continued storyline, 7 dusted its hands and walked off into the sunset. Everything was finished. And while you didn't know what happened with everyone, that's what made it so great. You could be thinking, "So what happened with Cloud and Tifa? Where'd Barret and Marlene settle? Did everyone die?" that's what made the game so great. Not everything was folded into a neat little package. You got closure, while still having questions that never really felt like they needed to be answered.
But now we're getting those answers. I'm not particularly happy about that, because it's an obvious case of appealing to fans vs maintaining artistic integrity. But to be honest, if they were gonna make a sequel for it, I'm glad it's a movie rather than a game.

They need to make a Chrono Trigger movie.
I would go as far as to say that they couldn't possibly make a bad movie out of Chrono trigger, but that'd be jinxing it. :/

I've been struggling through Chrono Trigger for about 4+ months now. I don't see what all the boners for it are about. It's incredibly generic in storyline, and the gameplay is unique only to a mild extent.

thats because it set the standard. All other rpg's copied it.
James
Sep 25th, 2003, 05:59 PM
Set the standard for sub-par RPGs? No wonder I stick to Final Fantasy.
Seriously, the game just brings nothing to the table to draw me in. I want to beat it and move onto Final Fantasy 5 (I'm doing an RPG Completion Quest), but I always dread sitting down to play it.
It doesn't help that the PSX version contains a lot of lag time. Going to the menu screen, going to a new area, starting/ending battles all have a few seconds of pause before happening.
But this is for the Gaming forums.

On a related note, there is also rumors of a Kingdom Hearts television series but I'll wait till Square makes their announcements at the Tokoyo Game Show tomorrow to talk about it.

Chrono Trigger is god. :(
I can't even begin to explain why. A big part is the music and I'll admit, the nostaligia. FF3 and Earthbound are its only contenders in my mind.
I will see this movie though if it does come out. I missed the Final Fanstasy movie before. I still have to see it. :/

Sephiroth was voiced? Uh? I don't remember anyone talking in there..
Whatever.
I'm sure the'll find a way to make this real crappy and make many fans cry.
Sorry but saying otherwise would be jinxing it.
and lying.
Chrono Cross anyone? Am I the only one who liked that game (and got all 44 caracters :P)

Agreed. If for no other reason then it crushed my hopes of a worthy sequel to the game I love. :(
An Earthbound movie would have limitless potential, but also limitless room to be horrible.

Seriously though, if you actualy played the games intead of following the usual "sequel < original" and "old > new" rules, you'd enjoy many more things.
Wow I so am losing my time with this, with a site filled with nostalgia driven people.
Like me.

The only problem I'll have with the FFVII movie is the voices. They don't talk in the game at all. I hope they don't fuck THAT up. :(

Well, the ones that showed up in Kingdom Hearts talked (aside from Cid), and it worked out pretty good.

I'm not really to sure what to think of this. I'll greet it with open arms, however. The name Final Fantasy has lost its meaning recently with this and FFX-2 coming out.

Given my opinion that Final Fantasy VII is the greatest console game ever made, I'm sure my opinion on this is fairly obvious.
I have to go squeal with excitement like a little girl now.

I can like and admire the game for all that it did. But I still stand by my opinion that the game was never meant to have a sequel, while something like FFX did. And for them to make a sequel to FF7 is more of a way to appeal to fanatics of the game and make some money, rather than have any respect for the art involved in the game's story.
I'm sure it'll be great and all, but some things are better off without sequels/answers to questions not meant to be answer.

Have any story details been released? I love that its being made, it's by far my favorite rpg ever, but I'd really like to know how they are going to continue the story.
James
Oct 7th, 2003, 07:02 PM
It basically takes place 2 years after the events of the game (just like FFX-2 takes place 2 years after FFX). And it seems that Sephiroth has returned. That's all that's known right now.

I agree that FFVII wasn't meant to have a sequel. No FF should even if they seem to scream for one. It's the concept of the series. The story of FFVII was so planned out and twisted that just by us seeing Sephiroth or Cloud, it muffs things up. Hopefully they totally stun us with incredible answers to all of our dying questions. It'll be interesting that is for sure.
James
Oct 9th, 2003, 12:52 PM
Yeah. Like I said, I think that FF7 was never meant to have clear-cut answers to everything. You were supposed to just think about the whole experience, about life and death, and about the world and the effects our technological advancements have on it. It was more about reflecting on our own world and lives, than it saying, "OK, here's what happened."
But even so, it's better they made it into a short movie, than a whole new game. I think this way, they can really focus on some main points, rather than having to refill the whole world with quests and characters who will just break down everything that FF7 did.

The best way to spoil a great game is to make a crap sequel. I will probably see this just for the hell of it, to see if it will actually be any good. Though thanks to FF:TSW, I do not have high hopes.
As to what the movie will be about?
SPOILERS:
Cloud vs. the Sephiroth clones, I think. It's kind of difficult to think of a reason why a guy who looks a lot like Sephiroth with short hair in the trailer would NOT be a clone, though (unless we get some frighteningly odd revelation like "SEPHIROTH HAS KIDS!") Or FF:AC might end up having no clones and just THE Sephiroth with a new look. Who knows.
I would like to think of it as Cloud vs. Clones for now, and then see what other information comes up about the plot.

Spoilers
Ya, the guy with short hair in leather is Seph's clone and so is the dude in the wheelchair. Basically he fights the clone for 45 minutes and thats it. :/
Or thats what I've heard from other websites and boards. I still haven't even played ff7 yet., being without a PS and all. :/

All I've heard is sometime in 2004 for the Japanese release, likely sometime in the spring. Nothing on the U.S. front at all as far as release dates go, but Square Enix HAS bought the United States title protection for Advent Children. This means that if they wanted to, they could bring the title over. It's unknown whether they'll go through with it or not.
