Is there a way to use like... a "branding" technique to make a tattoo?
The needling it in seems time consuming, and I am impatient. Of course if I get someone else to do it, I am sure that will be ok. But, if I want to do it to myself, I would prefer it to be fairly quick. So is there a way to sort of "burn" a tattoo in and not just end up with a scar, but an actual ink? Can I make a stamp is what I guess I am asking.

Branding does work but it doesnt look like a tattoo really. It just leaves a big mark in the skin. Branding was a craze in england or so i heard so ask the pommies. They may know more about it.

Burning just produces a scar. I suppose you could get the scar tattooed afterwards, though. :/

I don't think she's talking about branding; just using a similar technique to get the inked design under the skin all at once... correct me if I'm wrong Doopa... Anyway I'm not sure how possible it would be for you to get the whole pattern evenly under the skin at once so that it would look good, but my guess would be not very. The result of branding is the scar, so I'm not sure how uniform it would look putting ink underneath burnt flesh, or if it's even possible. But there's somebody here who certainly knows a lot more than me on this.............

To my knowledge, there isn't a way to brand yourself and have more than a scar. You did mention needles so maybe it's something new I haven't paid attention to...
But it's been my experience (and remember, I do this for a living, so it's almost guaranteed I'll see at least one branded customer a week) that branding only = scars. I've seen people with shapes and ugly pictures branded on them, but it's just artistically arranged scar tissue.
And I can guarantee that branding would hurt a LOT worse than tattoo needles.

You want to get branded?? Yeesh that sounds/would look horrible surely...tattooing doesnt take that long. Mine only took an hour and it was relatively large. Depends how many colours you have.

Also, tattooing seems a bit more addictive than branding.
Most folks I see with brands are limited to one, those with a higher pain threshold, two.
Tattoos, however... I can attest personally that my original plan was to just get one and be happy with it... and I ended up with seven, the outline having been done earlier this week on #8 :(

Personally, I think performing body art on oneself is a very, very bad idea. Even when you're an expert at any kind of body art I'd leave it up to someone who can use both hands and has a clearer point of view on the area. :/

Backing up FS's statement, my friend's college roommate somehow got his hands on tattoo equipment and would get drunk and give himself tattoos. One morning he woke up, and on his left calf, he had an upside down triangle with a few dots on it, and over the top of it, it said: "Time for pizza!"
I love the mental image of this person going through the thought process and the action of giving himself this tattoo.

Doopa, I would just have someone do it. Mine was fairly elaborate as far as the outline goes, and that only took about 45 minutes.
BTW, I've seen Dole's tattoo, and it rules.

People used to bend paperclips & heat them up and scar themselves. Inexpensive :)

No, I don't want to actually get branded, I just wondered if there was a fast kinda way to tattoo like that. I don't really care about the pain, I just thought tattoo's took a long time that's all. It wouldn't be a big tat, and only one color, so I guess from what everyone said it wouldn't take long at all.
The other thing though, is that... it has to be perfect or someone will die. If you bring in a design, how accurate is a tattoo artist going to be. That is another reason I was wondering if there was a way to "stamp" it in.

The artist I went to used a nifty little trick with tracing paper and speed stick that sticks the design to your skin. So he had a temporary copy of the design on my skin, and he just inked over that.
If you bring in a design of your own, it might save you a little dough, too.

If it's a small to medium sized image, they make a photocopy of your design using a special stenciling paper. They apply the photocopied image onto the area you want the tattoo applied, so it will look exactly how you want it. They can adjust the size of the image, according to how you want it. You usually make an appointment to see an tattoo artist, so you can have time to talk to him/her about how you want the tattoo done. Plus, it gives you a chance to get to know your artist and how he/she works. Ask to see his/her portfolio; most artists take photos of their work.

I read that in certain parts of Africa where the inhabitants skin is too dark for tattoos to show they make designs using raised scars.

I have five tattoos. Four on my left arm, and one on my ankle, all done myself, and they turned out good. :( I used a sewing needle and india ink.

LAME TATTOO JOKE
This guy gets a tattoo on his penis that says WENDY. But when it's not erect, all it says is "WY"
One day he's in the men's room and he sees a jamaican guy standing next to him. His penis also has "WY" on it
"Your girl's name is Wendy too?" he asks?
The jamaican replies "No mon. It says "WELCOME TO JAMAICA MON, HAVE A NICE DAY"'

They have a variety of predesigned patterns (in the thousands as far as I can see from the display rooms of the parlors) that kind of get "stamped" over the skin and the tatto artist just sort of traces along the skin, at least partially, towards the finished work. The only problem with these generic designs is that it usually seems to be assigned to the flunkies because the free-hand work takes longer, is more intricate, and is usually done by the more talented and "in demand" artists. That's kind of a blanket statement, I guess, and I can't confirm that it's 100% accurate. It just seems to be the case from what I've observed.

perfect. Because I was considering doing a henna version myself and have them ink over that, but those methods sound like they would work fine
*edit* now I just need to rob someone so I can pay for it

Well, the guy who did mine has been doing them for about 11 years, and I think he did excellent work. My guess would be that they do that with most custom designs. I would think that they would want it to be exactly correct, but I could be wrong too.
EDIT: What's a henna design? And where do you plan on getting it done (on your body)?

What's a henna design?
Its something like a ground up plant into a powder that stains the skin temporarily. Earlier this year when my sister was bald from Chemo I did a Henna tattoo on her head and I did a good job! So I am sure I'd be able to do one on myself.

Not definite - but probably my upper arm classic area.
