View Full Version : Got a full-time job...
Mockery

I'll be working at Ben Franklin (the craft shop, not the corpse) in the framing department. Basically I'll be cutting boards, cutting glass, setting up frames, and whatever the hell else it is they do back there. At least it's a back room job where I won't be dealing with customers. All of the web jobs I recently applied to, including some that seemed like a sure thing, fell through. So I was basically fucked and had to take a shit job.
I'm starting next Tuesday.
Not sure what this is going to do to my productivity on the site. I mean, I've got martial arts classes on tuesdays and thursdays, so I'll only have a few nights per week to get any real work done.
So yeah... life rules. :|

God damn you and your startling lack of priorities.
On the other hand, Ben Franklins is the only place left like the five and dimes of my youth. Where else would I go to get macrame supplies bottle cutting kits and the chance to oggle some hot granny on oxygen?
Seriously though. I'm sorry. I think if you become a metaphetamine freak you could keep this sight up to it's current standards for few more months before you crash and burn in a spectacular paranoid violence frenzy.

Seriously.
Good luck with finding another alternative to working full time, anyway. I think the amount of pieces that have gone up in the last two weeks more than make up for the lack of new pieces that there'll be in the near future.

That's what's really pissing me off. I'm in a good zone right now writing wise and I'm just cranking out material left and right, but once the new job comes I know I'm just going to feel burned out. I wouldn't mind it as much if I at least got paid decently. It just bites.
Wait, did I say I'd be doing board cutting? I meant wrist cutting. Yeah, that's it.

I'm actually surprised that this site woudn't gererate enough income for you not to work outside. Have you ever thought about advertising the site in magazines or having a franchise in third world countries like mine? (Canada). Germans are wierd you could probably set up a franchise there you could call it OOONTMOCKERSTUBENSOOBLEDOKER

No, they wouldn't like it unless it was covered in feces, unine, chocolate, or a combination of all three... in second thought you would do fine.
Congrats on the new job. I've been working at a health food store. The hours suck and I have to deal with old people, so i know where your coming from.

Actually, this anxiety is a good thing. I know it sounds kind of parenty and all but just stick to the safety guidelines, methods, ect and you'll be fine. The real danger, I think, is when you start working at something so long that you start getting laxidasical.

If I never cut myself at that job you won't.
Now all we need is health insurance. I have decided I need to start volunteering for trials in order to get medicines. Yay. We really seriously need health insurance. I am going to start trying to look for jobs myself and see what happens.

Yo, Rog...why don't you just go to the Richmond offices of unemployment and find out what kind of computer jobs are around. I know you're not a genius at it, but are better off then a lot of us are and you would probably find something with a blunt keyboard and a dull mouse so you don't impale yourself in photoshop. If that doesn't work, just check the papers...they usually have something better than "Help Wanted: Ask Inside" stickers superglued to the side of a brick structure. Eh..well..
They were just a few ideas.

You wouldn't believe how many computer jobs I've applied to in recent times. I know I'm more qualified than most people for them, but the economy is shit right now and companies know that they can hire some chump right out of college for peanuts instead of paying the regular amount to someone with real experience. I couldn't even find a data entry/word processing position and I type much faster than most people do. I constantly check the papers, job sites, etc... but there's just not much out there right now. And Richmond isn't exactly "Technology Central, USA" as it is. As for unemployment, I've been to the office and I don't qualify anyway. So this is the best thing I can do right now, just work a shit job until something else comes along.

ACHIMP: No, Jamesman isn't bald...BUT, he does have a beautiful picture of him witha circular life-saver around his face....makes ya think he was a regular on Gilligan's Island. :-(
ROG: Yea, it's true...the economy's crap and all, but like, if you like jobs where ya don't need to deal with customers, then check with Rite Aid or something. You can get a job as either a night-shift stocker, or even work in their back warehouses. There, you never see stupid customers, and warehouse jobs pay at LEAST 9 an hour to start, and usually more. So...yea..I think that's all I got.
PS, as the Steve Oedekerk fan-dude, do you know where I can pick up a copy of "the chosen one", which is the song that plays at the end credits of Kung Pow? I really love that tune.

Poor Mock. I feel your pain. There are NO jobs in the IT field at all. I don't even think that many college kids are getting them. I had two friends graduate last year with IT degrees; one works at a Best Buy, the other is a delievery driver. I've been unemployed for about 4 months and now it looks like I'm going to be taking another shitty job as an asst. manager at a GameStop. Remember when you were in school and had dreams and aspirations?! :lol
Oh well. All we can hope is that the economy will turn around or that I find that bag money like I've been counting on.
I'm sure whatever content to this site you can still provide will suffice. I've been a fan for well over a year and you haven't disappointed yet. I'm sure many of your buddies here can help too and if you ever need it I would be willing to lend a hand (if that means anything).

No shit. youd think my college degree would count for something. Aparently the only people that seem to give a shit about it are the ones that arent hiring. When they can hire some old fucker with 10 years experience and pay him jack shit why would they want a recent college grad. I guess I need to apply to mcdonalds pretty soon.

The IT market is in a sad state of affairs. The dot com explosion encouraged everybody and their imaginary friend to study IT and computer technical schools are still popping up faster than Tim Hortons in rural Canada. Every second person I meet is a web designer or IT specialist of some sort, and the market is just completely saturated. I bitched about working in tech support, but I was working next to people with their Masters in Computer Science or Software Engineering. Speaking of tech support, expect a lot of those jobs to be coming to Canada... I worked for Time Warner and they were slowly and quietly shifting their call centres either here or to India (although they received so many complaints from customers this trend might vanish). Why pay an American $15/hr when you can pay a Canadian $9-10 CDN/hr for the same job? Not that this helps RoG, but it's rough all over and you're definitely not alone... that's why I'm hiding out in school again until shit gets better OR the government or bank tells me to fuck off, then Tokyo here I come! :leech

You know why people can't get an IT job? It's because they suck, that's why. There's plenty of jobs, but you've gotta be good. Damn good.
Too many people went out and barely scraped in passing marks for a CS degree and expected to get shitloads of money piled on them just because they know how to write Visual Basic apps. Now the companies actually want you to have qualifications rather than "I have my master's, pay me more, hyuk hyuk."
It's all about the soft skills, too. ;)
