Recently i have been becoming more and more interested about the stuff in the bible i never heard about as a kid. I recently read about the Spear of Longinus, and i thought it was pretty interesting. It would be so unbearably cool if a spear that stabbed a guy (who may or may not have been a holy dude/son of god) way back some 2000 years ago and retained some of his blood/flesh was still around today. Apparently there are two current ones, the one in Vienna seeming to be the most authenticated one. Something that some of the most important people in history have all owned may be on display in a museum in Italy. That is so fucking cool it hurts. I liked the one Winston linked to about the cup of recurring flesh and blood, too, that one was neat.

Anyway, does anyone else know of any sort of religiously-tied sorta history/mythology stuff like that? It's super-interesting, i'd like to know more about this stuff. :o

The Ark of the Covenant may be in Ethiopia. I recently saw a special on the discovery channel that showed new evidence that the claim may be true.

Saint Christopher: The Werewolf Saint

Anything specific that you want to know? I'm quite knowledgable about Judeo-Christian legends/myth/apocrypha, and those are just two that happened to come to mind.

This will never be settled, but: Jeanette, is the REAL Holy Grail (the one everybody keeps finding in religious fiction) the cup Christ used in his "body/blood" speech at the Last Supper, or the one that they caught his blood in during the Crucifixion?

And what about the Shroud of Turin? What's the current consensus on that?

I was under the impression that the Ark of the Covenant was in Iraq( no it wasn't Rummsfield who told me that).

And anybody ever read Holy Blood Holy Grail? I did a couple term papers on the Templars and found it. Its not too convincing but does have some real creative stories.

Both, I believe.
And what about the Shroud of Turin? What's the current consensus on that?
Most of the scientific community believes that it is a medieval fake, but it is still being studied and debated. A good many Christians think its the real deal.

Saint Christopher RULES. >:D

I'm just intertested in stuff in general like that, all the kinds of weirdness stuff. Have any sites that cover lots of different things like that stuff?

Here is some non-canonical Old Testement and New Testement books. That should probably keep you busy for a while.
I'll get back to you with more tommorow, right now I'm going to bed.
P.S.: St. Christopher does indeed rule. I'm going to perhaps use the story as source material for a Werewolf: The Apocalypse game. Should be fun.

The Ark is in a crate in some U.S. bunker warehouse, and the Holy Grail fell into a crack when that German chick tried to leave the temple with it.

I kinda want to make an incredibly cheesy B-horror movie about Saint Christopher ripping out people's throats... FOR THE LORD.

He'd be wearing the robes and everything, but underneath he would be wearing sneakers in plain sight.

Christian Symbolism from A-Z. Some of what the author writes is antagonistic to other religions or irrelevant altogether, but most of it is interesting.

I've got constipation problems as well.

And you do have to wake up pretty early in the morning to fool me, because I like to state the obvious. It just makes the experience much more satisfying for everyone.

I was under the impression that the Ark of the Covenant was in Iraq

It would be so awesome if it was and the US soldiers found it in their search for WMDs.

Because, you know. THE weapon of mass destruction.

this post didn't turn out the way I had hoped.

Ninja: search about the Nephillim (spelling may vary, I'm not sure about how it translates from greek) in relation to the Testament and especially the book of Genesis. Supposedly giants that walked the earth before man was banished from paradise. I think some non-King James versions of the bible still have some mentions.

Afterthought: Also, Magdalene as the apostle that didn't make it into the book because of her being a woman, and/or because she carried the seed of the son of god. There's an extensive website about this point of view, but I didn't bookmark because I found it a bit silly. If you search you will find it easy though.

I think scholars have beat the dead horse of biblical symbolism for quite enough centuries on the topic of the number twelve to rule out any need for a thirteenth apostle. Then again, who doesn't like conspiracy theories. I can understand there being nuts out there who take the Bloodline Grail idea seriously, but now it's just stupid how much attention it's been getting.

Ninja, I've encountered a good many stories on the topic. One that sticks out as badass was one of a French national martyr of the Dark Ages who, after being decapitated, carried his own head in his arms and set it atop a hill half a mile away. I was thinking it was St. Denis, but the Catholic Encyclopedia doesn't mention that quirky part about his death.

It's mentioned in the first paragraph.
You think this guy was tough? Saint Lawrence got grilled alive, and he taunted his torturers by saying, "Turn me over, I think I'm done on this side."
Saint Bartholomew got skinned alive, and usually displayed holding his own skin. Talk about gruesome.
Its shown on the Sistine Chapel too.
They say that Michaelangelo painted his own face on the flayed skin.
Go here to see it: http://www.christusrex.org/www1/sistine/40-12-Skin.jpg (the image was too big to post.)

Herr Hitler actually had an extensive network set up for retrieving such relics. He despised Christianity, but still had tendancies towards the supernatural and superstitious.

I concur. Mistranslations, self-serving editing, and misinterpretations of the Bible over a two thousand year timeframe and a couple of languages is just ludicrous. We all must have faith.

P.S. Has anyone ever played that game in a psychology class where a simple couple of phrases, given by the instructor, is whisphered into the first student's ear and is passed on, in whisper form, through the remainder of the class? The result: The message remains EXACTLY the same when the last student receives it. It's amazing really.

Misinterpretation is a given in a "World" of perceptions and lucid tendancies, in which people strive to fit themselves into said "World", while others are content to have the "World" inside of them.

Ah, god really loved his saints, didn't he? :/

I remember reading about The Nephilim before, that maybe they were ill-begotten sons of angels and humans, or perhaps of demons and people. Dunno. But they sounded neat. :O

That reminds me, that tale of the guy carrying his own head. Apparently they say you can live for roughly 5-10 seconds after your head is removed before you lose blood and oxygen to your brain. That's pretty creepy. o .o

I'm pretty sure Nephilims or whatever are a result of a Seraphim and a human.
