Sorry for getting Fark for good material but http://timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/crime/article2317307.ece
Guns have been banned for ten years in Britian and their use in violent crimes is up over 200% In Australia they have been banned for 6 years and for the first 5 years their use IS up. Much like Drugs, it provides a nice underground sales ring, and since only criminals carry them they know they can use them against law abiding citizens.
Now I don't own a gun, in fact i may not EVER buy the revolver i have my eyes on, and would give that to my stepdad as soon as I have a kid. But the numbers seem oddly clear. Passing law against something ensures only people who don't give a shit about the law have one.
Oh and for the record I DO support closing the gunshow loophole, and not allowing guns to people (like myself) with mental diseases. (and yet I still might buy one) I am a big supporter of the Brady bill.
