View Full Version : Music You've Made

So I kinda figured there were a couple of people here who write/play music. I like to write because I've been playing since I was little, but that isn't here or there.
Here is a song I've written about an ex that I had. It's pretty basic so don't expect solid gold or anything like that.
My roots are in punk rock, southern rock, and reggae. This is a dub style tune.
Dub is basically a type of dance/jamming music I suppose.
Eitherway tell me it sucks, or it needs this, or it's good.
Here it is (http://files-upload.com/files/505473/KDub2.mp3).
This thread is to encourage anyone who writes music to post it. Criticism is always cool, but being a dick isn't. lol

Well I'm sure you've already heard my comedic music with A.L.E. and other stuff like the "I Will Beat Pacman" and "Dead Backstreet Boys" tunes, but I also did some more experimental stuff a few years back. Nothing amazing, just messing around really, but here it is if you want to take a listen:

Fathom, good luck on that dood, I wanna see some pictures. And thanks. Drink a beer or 8, then do some illegal substance(s) to get the full effect of the tune
MattJack, I think that sounded pretty good. Did you play all the instruments yourself and record/mix it yourself or what?

Wow thanks man, I appreciate it. The only thing I didn't write/play was the bassline. My best friend writes all the bass parts.
I played/recorded/arranged all other parts in the song. Instead of doing actual drums, I just made a loop or two and used that for the main beat. I played with a synth to get the electro sounds mixed in too.
maybe I'll put another up one day.

I kinda like it dood. I'm completely new to electronic music, so I listen to everything with an open mind. Is there something you are going for? or is it just you completely experimenting?
You use a lot of ambience in these tunes, which isn't a bad thing. To me, and I mean no disrespect, it sounds like some of these tunes could be in video games. Maybe not all of them, but Weakday, Rupture, and Walking On Fish immediately conjure video game-esque mental pictures. Eitherway, I think it's cool.

bigtimecow: Great stuff, i really like george orwell the musical. I always admire people who can scream like that without making their throats bleed. Slightly Outrageous Neanderthals is pretty damn good too. Try and find those noise tracks too, i'm eager at all times to hear noise.
In other news, i uploaded some stuff i made last year for yall's listenin' pleasure (if you fancy this kind of stuff):
Armies (http://personal.inet.fi/koti/penor/muzak/armies.mp3)
My corroded wench (http://personal.inet.fi/koti/penor/muzak/mycorrodedwench.mp3)
Scalpelswamp (http://personal.inet.fi/koti/penor/muzak/scalpelswamp.mp3)
Rust-drill (http://www.hrwiki.org/images/c/cc/deleted.PNG)
The first two i'd call industrial, the third harsh noise (and it really is harsh). The last one i can't categorize.
EDIT: I guess i should also share my tools of the trade. I've been using jeskola buzz (wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeskola_buzz)) for roughly a year and a half now. Before that i used various trackers, like modplug tracker and similar for some time. So basically my setup is a rather crappy windows pc with a rather crappy headset plugged into it.
EDIT 2: I had to remove the last one to free up some CYBER-space.

Yeah, I've played around with that too, but you can forget it for anything but Techno or House, or anything like that. All the actual "instruments" sound so messed up. The Piano hurts me, the brass does too, and I don't know what's up with the guitars. It's easy if want to smack some beats together, but that's about it.

I remember, at the time the disks were made, me and friends were playing with FruityLoops, Acid and SoundForge 5.0 a lot. And i was taking loops from borrowed video games, movies, stuff from the library, anything really.
But yeah, let me dump the shit on megaupload

Here's some random stuff I recorded a few years ago. I was trying to go for kind of a ambient, creepy vibe on this. For the "Voices" recording I put a bunch of radios in front of a tape recorder, on different stations, and later added some echo effects to it on my PC. On "Feedback", I would recorded the (you guessed it) feedback from my PC speakers, and then record more feedback over the old recording being played. I just wanted to see what weird noises and sounds I could make with speaker and radio feedback, fans, and other things.

Yeah, I know it's repetitive. That's why the songs are kept to a relative shortness (An average of 3:30). This is due to a broken microphone port on my computer, not allowing me to have any vocals.
They're just projects, but I actually made a Liebestoter album. Not professional, just a "Burn/Print your own" copy, though. My current project (Tar Man) is going to be a lot more serious, and be done more professionally, I hope.

FL Studio is a really powerful tool, so I believe it :D
As far as bit crushers I just utilize the one built into Native Instruments' Massive app. I'm sure you can google FL Studio Plugins, and then find a site that has one.
You should also check out the aforementioned Massive app. It is very impressive, and well, massive in its capabilities. You can plug it in through FL Studio as well, so it will fit right in for you.

I should note I know nothing technical about FL. I know how I want shit to sound, so I fuck around until I get it to sound the way I want it.

continuing my trend of precious bedroom songs, I wrote a song in two minutes and recorded it really fast, and noodled a little bit over it just to see how it turned out. It's called "don't go." Usually I write garbage lyrics just to remember a melody and then change them later, but I decided to just keep whatever simple stuff I wrote this time, just to get it out quick. I like that it's not been thought out too much and whatever. Yeah.

MajorScales, those videos you posted in that thread were alright. I don't understand how guitar players don't know how to play to you :\
Personally I'd go for something very rhythmic if I were playing guitar while you played bass. The second video was my favorite out of all of them. I'm a sucker for nasty muff/disto bass lines though.
I was thinking that we I-Mockery frandz should collaborate a little. I think it'd be fun. Can somebody send me a guitar/bass/drum track? We could kind of have internet jams if you will. The Art Forum use to do cool little things, so I think we could too. Enough of us fu*k about with music, so why not?

Today I finally had my drummer and guitarist show up...they only can show up once or twice every few months (they have little kids) its full sessions so they are long and might be a boring for some. When I make the bass lines I'm playing what I think the guitar should be doing and the bass so it might sound confusing to some because I do both. All the songs are taken from my bass lines and I would like them to not be loop sounding. I'm trying to figure out how to break the songs up so they have more tempo changes and maybe get a singer...Its hard when you can't sing >:

Hmm I listened to a good bit of your album.
I feel like you've sort of put yourself into a box. It seems to me that you use the same synths over and over. That isn't necessarily a bad thing, but some of the tracks just sort of sound a whole lot alike. I think maybe the drum tracks could have a little more flare, and as well as maybe working on the levels of the over all production. Also, I think you should try sampling more or recording your own vocals and then manipulating the wav into something strange instead of using the Microsoft Sam stuff so much. It's OK in conservative moderation, but I wouldn't overly use it as much, personally.
I hope the paragraph above doesn't come across as dickish or anything man. I don't want to discourage anyone in the slightest from posting their work. I was just putting in my two cents.
Filth, Humdrum, In Which We Shame The Devile, and Disinfective are my favorites. I like Filth's breakdown synth near 2:40. Humdrum has a classic hard techno/industrial sound to it that I can dig on. Disinfective's drum tracks remind me of early electro/80s and I pretty much have a constant hard on for that kind of music. IWWStD has a whole lot of potential and I think you should revisit it. Maybe you can send me some of the synth lines and we could collab if you wouldn't mind ;)
Cheers

Cool, thanks for listening! I've been dabbling with music to and from for quite some time, but never more than on a pure hobby level - I don't have a classic good voice and I'm not an extremely skilled musician. I've had problems finding my own style, which has resulted in many weird arrangements. At times I've let other people sing my songs.
I think I've finally come up with something that has some kind of genuine style and feeling to it. It was quite a magical experience, because usually I spend weeks and weeks tweaking my songs (without actually improving them) but this one just popped out of my brain; I wrote the lyrics and recorded the whole thing the same day. It's not at all complicated, which may be why it was such a deliberating feeling.
I've tried a bit to emulate american folk tradition, so with a lot of yanks around I thought this could be a good place to show it.
I have to link to my myspace account, as I don't know how to link individual songs.

A bunch of stuff
You've got a really cool Irish folk style to your music and it is good. Break The Silence is good. Who is singing?
I Wish It Could Always Stay like that is such a good (Irish)folk(ish) song. It is arranged very well and it has a great ambiance to it. I can honestly see me and one of my exes listening to this and drinking. +5
The rest are all good too. It is a real shame that they have so few plays. I know a couple of people that would absolutely love your style. I'm one of them. You have such a lullaby feeling to your songs that it's easy to get hypnotized by them.
Keep it up! Write more. Share.

This is a very rough mix on something I came up with rather quick. Let me know what you think.
I made peace with it being a rough mix, so with that said I think the arrangement could use a bit of work. All the pieces are good, but in my opinion you should take the time to explore them a bit before layering so quickly.
The first synth could go a bit longer and you could let the drums do some work. Build it up a bit for 30sec~1min. Then you bring in the next string synth with some new drum work on it. Finally, add your arp synth with it all. It is a simple build, but it was just for an example.
I feel like all the parts are good, but you're not giving the listener enough time to truly appreciate the layers.
Not trying to come off as a dick or anything, but just saying you got good part and now it's time to put some meat on the song.
Keep it up and keep posting maynggg

I wrote a bunch of new songs, 6 or 7, and this week I couldn't decide whether to record those new ones or do some webcam videos of older songs, and I decided on the latter. I just couldn't be bothered with the stress of recording new songs this week, and decided to break my rule against playing songs in front of a webcam for a bit of fun. So I uploaded this:

I did battle with my laptop for nearly a day and a half to fix some syncing problems, and I have wet hair from the shower, but I think it came out okay. I plan to do loads more in the next two days, including a few covers.

Back in 1997, I was getting busy with a DOS-based program called SoundClub. I had no musical background - just appreciated good music. I stumbled across these brilliantly horrid gems again. LOL! I had fun uploading them so you can check out my distardly bad music making ability. I will just stick with my ear discerning whats good and keep away from making it. lol
There were 3 that I could salvage... enjoy LOL!

Tossed this (http://www.esseb.com/andail/rescuefinal.mp3) up recently. Haven't had much feedback, so it could be terrible or quite ok for all I know.
Enjoy!

I was extremely bored today so I made a shitty 1-minute song in Fruity Loops. The second half is cooler than the first half, but it sounds like some weird synth-Caribbean shit http://tindeck.com/listen/xyov

Dude! Sweet! Kenny wants download! What do you use for your drum loops?
Oh yeah, I got some tunes, too:
myspace.com/kennytheinsane
I know no one goes to Myspace anymore, but it's a good place for a quick sample of someone's tunes.
If I have the choice of where to send people, I prefer:
www.imradio.com/kennytheinsane (http://www.imradio.com/kennytheinsane)
The layout isn't as good. But all the same songs are there. And the exposure is better.

Oh fuck, I got a working program. Now I just have to fine-tune the images, run a bunch of tests on each one, then find a way to record them without it being audible in the mix.

I make terrible music, the chords don't progress, so much as regress, single note solos sound like dental floss being picked through a harmonizer, and the drums sound like a bunch of shoes in a washing machine.

haha, don't hate me but I prefer the first one. You've completely changed it, but I just thought you could alter it a bit.
BTW I thought it was awesome, in case you didn't think so.
I feel bad so I might upload something now. Hang on.

I did it late at night when everyone was in bed and the time it took to wite and record was probably even less than the amount of time it took to animate the video, but I seem to like when things look and sound shitty.

Latest song I recorded after taking your advice. (http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=1183136&songID=10781796)
I'm having trouble getting the vocal to sit in the mix, but it might have something to do with the fact that the room is not an isolation booth. It's sounds a little...airy... If there is a plugin that can simulate the sound of a booth, please let me know and I'll make you a killer song if you want to supply the lyrics.

Hey, thanks! All done on my PC using Reaper (www.reaper.fm). I use Superior Drummer for the drum tracks and do guitar, bass and vocals direct along with a variety of plugins.
For the vocals, I double the main tracks, panned 100% left and 100% right, and compress the shit out of them. I'm not really good with compression and it's mostly guesswork, but it seems to come out right. Glad you liked it!

Sounds Pro to me, man. I'm not great at compression either, having always tried to add it with the original signal before it reaches the computer, but I'm starting to get into VST plugins and there are some really good ones being offered gratis. Have you heard of the newer freebie one, Studio Devil? It's an amp simulator...bundled with Acid Music Studio, but you can download it separately here (http://www.studiodevil.com/products/british_valve_custom/index.php).
I never could get the hang of Reaper, can you snap-to-grid with it?

I've done some more songs since the last time I posted. A few old ones that I rerecorded, some completely new. Here are two of the completely new ones. I've remixed both of these slightly since uploading them to youtube, mainly just making them louder and noisier. I have a temperamental four-track that infuriates me so I usually get pissed off, upload what I've managed to get and then get annoyed at myself for letting it beat me.

The one I'm putting the most effort into recently is my electronic work. While it is more or less done "dick with a laptop" style, I got some pretty decent ideas down.
