View Full Version : Cloverfield? Anyone?

I hope this lives up to the hype. The trailer makes it look really fucking good. I have never seen Lost, so I know nothing of JJ Abrams. But I love destruction, especially on a large scale.
Make with the speculation.

Yaaaaay. I've been looking forward to this since the first teaser. I'm really pumped for it. It LOOKS like it will be really good but ya never know. I have a gif somewhere that has a close up view of when the monster is walking between buildings and you can kinda make out the legs and part of the body.

Its been built up so much anything short of the best movie ever made will be probably a disappointment to most, though I do have high expectations and will probably see it.

J.J. Abrams isn't my favorite guy but this movie looks like it will be a good one, if they drop the whole "blair witch unsteady cam" gimmick. i don't mind a couple of scenes but if it is the whole movie.....urk!

Cloverfield. According to IMDB it "Revolves around a monster attack in New York as told from the point of view of a small group of people."
And the almighty wikipedia says "J. J. Abrams conceived of a new monster after he and his son visited a toy store in Japan. He explained, "We saw all these Godzilla toys, and I thought, we need our own monster, and not King Kong, King Kong's adorable."
Ok
1. A giant silverfish. My god those things terrify me.
2. A giant angry self-flinging piece of poo.
3. A giant Crispin Glover off his meds.
4. My boss (as a giant) bringing an army of creatures from the evil planet she came from.
5. A giant wet hairball created from the foulness trapped in all the shower drains of the world.
6. A giant spaghetti. I hate spaghetti :(

I think it should be the ex-StayPuft Marshmellow Man, bitter over his makeover into the KeepRegular Tofu Man. His power? Gross commercialism.

I still think it should be Satan.
By the way, in the trailer in the theaters, like the one in AvP:R, in the part where the chopper is spinning and the girls are screaming, you can see a GIGANTIC ship in the back-ground, through the chopper doors. It looks like one of the things out of Independence Day. It's a pretty steady shot, too. The ship-thing is long.
Anyway, that's just what I recall.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=ufYF0f-zMgY
In this trailer, at about a minute and 52 seconds, the chopper spins around and it's hard to make out, but you'll see what looks like a lumpy skyline behind the buildings. I called foul immediately, because there aren't mountains in Manhattan. It's floating, too.

If at the end of the movie the monster turns into a scrawny guy in his boxers and embarrassedly shuffles his way off screen, we'll know it was a Rampage rip-off!

I've seen a model of what apparently is the monster. Fits the poster (claw marks) and was apparently created by the art director of the film Peter Konig
It looks lame :( But by the looks of the trailer we probably wont even get to see it
for those who want to see what is apparently the monster:

Fucking Awesome.
The only thing that irked me about the movie is that they never explain what the monster is. You know of what it is capable of, and a good idea of what it can do. But the problem with it is that it feels unfinished in the end. We need a sequel or some other kind of expansion to try to figure this one out.
I do have a good idea of what it is. Its a fucking alien. At the end of the movie, during the last scene, one of the things you see is something landing in the water outside Coney Island (its kind of hard to notice, i barely caught it). It also can spawn smaller versions of itself, so it can reproduce, and it has a lot of teeth. Also, if you are bitten by the spawn, you are pretty much fucked since they infect you with something that kills you within a couple of hours (the movie takes place in the span of 7-8 hours) in a horrific splatter of blood.

I liked it a lot. It was fun, fast, entertaining, had really good special effects..... the actors are secondary. It was what Roland Emmerich would aspire to do if he wasn't satisfied making pieces of shit like Independence Day.
Go see it. Big movies like this don't have the same impact on DVD.

This was the best (modern) movie ive seen in the past 5 years
Let me explain what it is in my theory.
Some kind of giant creature mutated by the "Deep sea nectar" used in slusho and that it was awoken by whatever meteorite/ship crashed in the ocean or by tagruoto drilling. It has parasite spider things on it that are carnivourus and I think their saliva reacts with the slusho to make people explode ( holy shit, I jumped during that scene) or implants some sort of venom.
Also after the credits you can here someone say "help us" but when its played backwards its "its still alive" I dont have a link to the clip so google it.
The thing I'm confused about is when it eat/bite/kills Hud WTF is his body still intact? I mean I get that its like trying to bite an ant, but you heard chewing.
These things im saying are in complete random order
Also anyone see the Iron man or hellboy 2 trailers? The Iron man trailer kicked SO MUCH ASS especially when they start playing black sabbath.
Edit: Completely forgot to mention that the monster looks like an anorexic Orga ( the godzilla monster)
Realllllly Realllllly good movie, go see it.

Intresting, i forgot the slusho thing. So the cloverfield monster (or as my friends and i call it "The terrible thing") is a giant mutant slusho monster. I also remember seeing on one of those viral sites that there was some kind of greenpeace movement to stop taguroto drilling from harming some humpback whales. So the monster may be some kind of Muatated, slusho, humpback whale monster.

It was awesome. The shaky-cam didn't bother me that much, and the romance aspect of it was nice. Yes, there is a relationship between two characters, but that's as far as I'm letting on. The monster looks like something you would see in Gears of War or Resistance:Fall of Man.

ok I'm no doctor but I don't think you last long when you have a piece of rebar stuck through your chest, nor do you last long when it's pulled out. I'll buy everything else with monsters and other crap but seriously if you're trying to do this blair witch realism I think you should try to work your way around crap like that.

"the monster looks like an anorexic Orga ( the godzilla monster)"
I thought the same thing when I finally saw it. The little monsters looked like something out of Starship Troopers.
Still, this was a good film, nice and messed up. Plus I had a good laugh about the camera. It survives explosions, being in a monsters mouth, AND goes 90 minutes without a re-charge!?
Get me one of those.
EDIT: Hellboy 2 looks awesome. Hellboy gets to kick gay albino vampire/elf/whatever ass.

Holy damn. I saw it yesterday.
Easily one of the best movies of the past few years.
I read in some interview that the Cloverfield monster-thing is immature. So maybe there's other, larger ones?
I don't have any good theories about it's creation or whatever, I just know that it was fucking adorable, and it's little zergling-things were too.
I'd probably get the figure if it wasn't 100 fucking dollars.

Hype is a powerful tool.
It was pretty mediocre. The camera jiggles were kind of a gimmick to draw you into a movie with an otherwise non-existent story and two-dimensional cast.
It was the film equivalent of cheetos: tasty, but utterly devoid of any value. And after I finish the bag I don't want any cheetos for another goddamn year.
I've never been a fan of big monster movies. I hated Godzilla. When the monster's that huge, there's no chance for suspense, and it's not scary in a "I'm gonna stalk my prey and eat them with my little mouth too" kind of way. I mean, I guess you could get stomped or chewed up by it, but it doesn't play on the human psyche the way other monsters do. You're just collateral damage of a flopping big fish in a small pond. Its predatory instincts, mental or physical, aren't dead set on you and your death. It's not going to wrap you up in a slimy cocoon or slowly digest you or eat your wife's brains. It has no reason to kill you. It's just... big. Imagine a movie about John Wayne Gacey, but instead of hunting you and slitting your throat, he grows 20 stories tall and steps on people. Sounds kinda stupid, huh? The characters are just monster food, and the plot is such: Make big monster. Big monster kills people and hits buildings. Try to kill monster. Can't. Damn! Loud noises.

The OC is in the fact that all the human characters that the movie follows are total spoiled brat douchebags (except for Hud...I kinda liked Hud). I didn't give a damn when any of them died...including Hud unfortunately. You get to see the monster a considerable amount but sometimes the shots seemed rediculously fake. There were times when it felt mildly real but than a random shot would come along and I'd be say to myself "did Abrams just give up or did they run out of money?" My friend said it was pretty mind blowing after she saw it...but I just didn't fall in the way she did...there was some pricelessly funny shit but other than that little else.
