I really didn't want to make a thread for this.

So I did, but I didn't, you feel me, playa?

Anyway I'm using a wacom now, but when I'm doing pixel art in Photoshop, if I touch the pen down somewhere, it'll mark it as me having done something in the history, but nothing will actually show up. But a pixel WILL show up if I put the pen down next to the pixel I actually want and drag it over there.

For example, pretend that the number pad is a square of 9 pixels:

789
456
123

If I want 5 to be black, I can't just click 5. I have to click on, say, 6, and then drag over to 5. And when I do that, 6 doesn't change color.

It's just annoying, does anyone know a fix?

I think Art Chat could be a good idea. Some things just don't need a whole thread dedicaded to it.

i guess it might be something to do with the tool you're choosing. like, when you choose paint brush, even with 100% opacity, hardness & flow and 1px, even a single click, what i get it's a 4 pixel instead of 1.
00
00 = 1px

and i choose pencil tool with the same settings (no hardness), what i got it's a solid, 1 pixel block.

0 = 1px

i dunno, since i don't have my wacom with me now, what i guess it's either the tools you chose, or the pressure of your wacom pen when you use it as it'll determine the color it to get the real "pencil on paper" kind of feeling unlike mouse.
hope it helps!

I dunno, I tried pushing REALLY HARD in one spot to get a point to show up, but just pushing lightly and dragging makes points show up everywhere else.

Dec 30th, 2007, 10:16 PM
Is your hand resting on the pad of it? That can make different points when your on it too. I'm probably wrong but you might be doing it and not realizing it.

No, fathom, because only the wacom pen tip will react to the wacom surface.

Fathom Zero

I forgot it was all wacom. And I guarantee you that I AT LEAST know as much as digitizers as you. I've owned about five (tablets, that is). Broke some of them, but I've used 'em. If you tried doing it on a touchscreen, you'd get vectoring issues.

I want me one of those Cintiq ones. Y'know, the ones with the screens embedded into the absolutely gigantic drawing surface. I'd settle for the 12WX model, though.

MLE
Dec 31st, 2007, 12:22 AM
I can't draw on Cintiqs. It's just not right for some reason. If I can see what I'm drawing, I'd rather draw on paper, just personal preference.

I have a bamboo wacom, and it's surprisingly nice. It's about 4x6ish (i'm not gonna bother taking measurements) active working space, and it's widescreen. For under $100 and right when my intuos2 broke, it was a good deal!

Fathom Zero
Dec 31st, 2007, 12:29 AM
I've really been thinking about the Bamboo. Does it feel cheap? Would it break if I just tossed it in a bag full of stuff?

MLE
Dec 31st, 2007, 12:32 AM
No, especially since they made the cord dicsonnectable.

Eric and I both have them, since I bought him one for christmas, and he agrees that it doesn't feel cheap. I love the pen stand, and the mouse feels more sturdy than my Intuos2 mouse (which broke both times I owned an Intuos2. You may not feel the same way about the mouse, since it's light, but I like it much better.

Just a cute side note: the eraser tip sounds like and feels like an eraser when you use it. I fell in love with that.

PS - there are buttons on the top that you don't need the pen to hit them now. Zoom/Scroll wheel, a page back and page forward buttons, and two softkeys. I set mine to notepad and calculator.

Fathom Zero
Dec 31st, 2007, 12:38 AM
:hypno The eraser sounds cool.

I can't decide if I should get this before or after another... tablet PC. Hahaha, they're piling up on me. I'm thinking a Fujitsu Stylistic. Screw the keyboard.

At the prices of them, though, especially with the Stylistic being used, I could get both.

i'm also having problems with my wacom tablet:

when i plug it into my laptop it works fine with the mouse, but when i use the pen's left and right click buttons on the side of it or tap it down. they all register as right-clicks.

!?!?!?!?!?!

MLE
Jan 2nd, 2008, 12:15 PM
First of all, what type of wacom do you have? Graphire, Intuos, Bamboo? It should all be the same really, but go into your pen tablet settings, and you check to make sure that the buttons are set properly.

If it is an intuos or something similar enough, you might have two tabbable buttons on the top or something that say PEN and MOUSE. It's possible you tapped MOUSE with your wacom pen, and made it so your tablet thinks you want to use the pen as a mouse. The first time I accidentally did that, i freaked the fuck out.

I love my wacom even if I hadn't used it in over a year! But yeah, I do remember something occassionally bothering me with it that I had to move it slightly when it touched down sometimes to make a dot. When the pressure setting are on the paintbrush however I never had this problem, even though sometimes this would result in a faint dot.

And fathom, how about touching the pen to the pad? That counts as a left click.

MLE : How would you feel if we ran our own art contests? Nothing to poll or vote on. No prizes.

Just a thing where someone posts something and we see how others might inerpet it or mess about with it. Not like a photochop contest (although those are fun). But like, if I posted an Xray of my skull, people could play around with my nogin.

As for individual contests, I'd like it if people could just PM the idea to me, and as soon as I say it's a go (like Tadao, yours is a go), You can make the thread, and when I sticky it until it's over, I'll add the word CONTEST in there as well. The fact that it's stickied means it's MLE approved ;D

I think contests are a wonderful idea! I've been playing around with some ideas for specific art contests and possible prizes. If anyone has some ideas, let me know!

I need to find a different style or art form. I don't feel the creative juices flowing any more. Has anyone worked with clay? I think it would be fun to make something and then paint it. I don't want clay that I have to bake, and I don't know if there is one that exists that is like that. I'm shure clay drys ok from the air, but what does baking do? Keep it from regaining moisture in the future?

MLE
Jan 22nd, 2008, 08:10 AM
clay changes the chemical composition of it. It turns some clays to porcelain and some to other things similar, obviously. There are some good air-dry clays out there, but it's hard to work with them, because they don't stay pliable until you decide to cook them. You might want to make a compromise and go for Sculpey. You don't have to bake it in a kiln, but you do bake it in an oven.

Tadao
Jan 22nd, 2008, 04:56 PM
how long in the oven? love the new art theme this week (wild).

MLE
Jan 22nd, 2008, 04:58 PM
it depends on how thick the clay is. you shouldn't make it more than 2 inches thick, because it will burn on the outside before cooking the inside. mainly it's like, 10-20 minutes.

Tadao
Jan 22nd, 2008, 05:04 PM
i'll look into it. thats not bad oven time. it's probably not as cheap as a lump of clay.

I'm not sure what he said in here but I went and looked at the completely uncalled for things he said in Tadao's thread and it just looked like an honest opinion. Is it really that big of a deal?

On that night he went to 3 peoples art threads just say negative things. In mine, he really didn't say anything at all. He didn't point out why my art should not be displayed, called my photo's photoshopped, blah blah. He was just on the rag or something. I don't like it (nor do most) because art is sensitive to some and we'd all like to see more of it, rather than have some guy who thinks he can draw faces tell other what they are doing wrong.

i hope it's good enough to post. the last thing i did was a 90 second intro for a feminist film festival that actually got used both days, so they loved it but it felt too... PBS or something for me. like it was really obvious that this was my first quarter with aftereffects. so that's not getting youtube'd.
my goal, then, is to make something i feel good enough about to just toss out there for anyone to see

apparently this painstaking work of stubborn aesthetics isnt enough to net me the 2 credits i wanted, so i guess i'll also be participating in that NIN 'ghosts' video competition thing

this is so up in the air it's unreal, it is the definition of writing checks that i have no idea if they can be cashed. i sense either wild success, crushing mediocrity, or despondent failure.

either way i'll do my best to keep posting around here.

oh, side note: my design history class asked us to make ex libris bookplates based on what we've learned in class, from any point in time.

so i did this and now you know my full name:

i use the internet just as much as anyone here (probably more), it's just that specific kind of forum posting (tactfully choosing words to make people take you seriously even if your idea still sucks) has gotten old when you can just be forthright and post as yourself.
i understand, i guess, how some acronyms are supposed to be offensive as being the verbal shortcut of 13 yr old boys everywhere, i just dont give any respect to it because it implies this idea of being above it. suprematism could be described in a lot of nice words i have lots of art history books for, or it could just be described as 'fukken saved' because it's actually awesome outside of college

also, the art world online is full of defensive, exhausting, and overly serious deviant-tarts that i like to be polite and blunt for a change. this dudes talking like we wont be friends if i say the wrong thing. i dont need that nonsense.

but thanks MLE, i remember the things you posted before i stopped posting here regularly and it's nice to feel like i've developed since then :)

and just because this is art chat and not "rez' history with the internet and his overwrought rationalizations on why he posts like that", here's a pic i did recently that was just a typographic brainstorm

i like it! are you designing your own fonts, or is it just the composition you're playing around with?

a mate of mine is setting up a website for street art (im not 100% on the name by the way but that wasn't my call). we were kind of bouncing ideas around and i thought it might be a good idea to make actual whatpastes for the bannerspace (or whatever you call it - on this site, the area just above the navigation bar where the i-mock guy is).

that way, instead of having a graphic design - OK, but a bit sterile - he could have a rolling stock of photos, with the site name incorporated into each poster design (my idea being the photos could be as much about architecture - placement of the poster in a certain environment - as the poster itself). below is one of my try-outs. its just an idea so some bits are very shit - the fag (or cigarette :lol), the bottom of the tumour to his left. but if you have any constructive crits (can't tell what it's supposed to say? i suck at thinking in 3D, i was thinking of trying to mould it in blu-tac first for reference or something. any tips?) please share.

or, if you have any ideas, throw them my way - i'm thinking of spelling it out with the intestines of a seppuku guy too, should be fun.

FUCK

i know it's probably because i'm attempting something rather ambitious when it's pretty much only my second go-around with aftereffects, but is video editing typically really fucking slow like this?
in the last 4 days i've put in 30-35 hours and i *just* reached the 3 minute mark.
as for how it is so far, i'm going back and forth. i'm hampered by how much of this is figuring it out as i go along, on the other hand i have some pretty fine moments on here.

it took me like 100 hours to edit an 8 minute movie

Rez
May 22nd, 2008, 06:12 PM
yeah mine is around that length too.

i finished about half of it, showed my advisor, and she's ticked off that i didnt get permission to use the music, even though it's a personal project, because she wants to see it submitted to various festivals and events once it's done because she thinks it's great.

if you're wondering the music is the first 8 minutes of Surgeon's "This is for you shits" DJ mix which has:

(intro) from tape archive
Scorn - Doors
DBit - Kero mix
Autechre - Laughing Quarter
British Murder Boys - Splinter
Aphex Twin - Vordhosbn

hopefully if i do want permission i'd only have to go through the label releasing the mix (Warp) and not Warp, Downwards, Scorn, Hymen, AND R.A.S.
i dont know how that shit works, but im guessing it's a fool's chance in MENSA.

but i guess i'm doing a good job?
i wish i were a better writer. i think what i'm trying to say is rather nuanced but it has to be succinct, readable, but presented in disparate chunks. i'm doing okay so far but i feel a lot of it is kinda... facile and not up to par with the visuals.
eh, that's what life is for. i'm not going to do the best thing ever at 23.

i think it's a thin line that other people are much better at being paid to manage (agents) than people on the internet are. how to transmit excitement about your work but not look naive in comparison to much better work (which there always will be). how to sell your ideas to others while not coming off as an arrogant prick. knowing your flaws without being cowardly about them.... it's difficult and i havent seen many people handle it with grace aside from just keeping quiet and the explanations terse, but i like to TAAAAAAALK about it. there's a reason for everything. i like being kind of transparent about what i do because goddamn it i am onto something

I thought I could cut it as a journo, but after three months at a fashion magazine I'd had enough criticism to confirm my own self-doubt. I moved to Portland from Seattle to try to get work and so far got a test, but I'd sweep floors for them just to get a foot in the door.

My favorite stuff is Meet The Raisins and the Adventures of Mark Twain. Those films were on a level all their own. It's a shame clay kind of fell by the wayside in favor of cheaper materials.

£50m Painting 'Not as Good' as £8 Telly
New findings stun art world

ART GALLERIES were last night facing the prospect of SCRAPPING all their masterpieces after experts proved that a telly costing just £8 was more than ELEVEN TIMES as interesting as the world's most valuable painting.
Scientists shut volunteers in a completely bare room containing Vincent Van Gogh's 'Sunflowers', an armchair and a small black & white TV, and then monitored their viewing habits for an hour.

chair
Amazingly, they spent an average of less than 5 minutes standing looking at the £50 million painting, before sitting down in the chair and watching whatever was on the television for the rest of the hour.

eel
"At first we doubted our results," said Professor Kent Walton, head of Statistics at Brunel University. "But then we checked and re-checked them and there was no mistake. Telly is loads better than posh paintings, and that's a scientific fact."

ladyland
When the experiment was repeated using the Mona Lisa and a copy of the Autotrader, the results were even more marked.

Disneyland
Sir Roy Strong, curator of the National Gallery, was devastated when we told him of Professor Walton's findings. "I have wasted my life," he said. "All this shit is going in a skip first thing tomorrow, I can tell you."

make it look more like an apple

Pop the lights and the dark more. The more contrast you have versus the picture, the more hyper-real it will look. If there's a way to have the sharp edge of the apple stay and have the other side of the color fade to the next, you might want to think about doing that. You should also add a basic shadow at the bottom so it's not floating in midair.

Once that's done, I'm not sure if I'd even have any other critiques. You're already very accurate in your work, and it just needs a few minor tweaks to make it look real.

I'm starting to work on collages and other random craft projects. I'll be posting them once I get my scanner up.

I agree, about upping contrast on the apple. When you do that, the saturation is generally also pushed up though, so you might want to dial that down. The specular highlights look really good. Is this being done on a wacom tablet?

no. touchpad.

Looks like you get some good control with one. I use a mouse for everything graphical and it's not very comfortable. Sometimes an entire folder of images has to have a rig painted out or cracks smoothed. That's incentive for getting it right in-camera. Are you going to post the updated version?

I have synesthesia, mostly cross-wired numbers and colors, and I have the vague idea to paint a "synesthesia" series on smallish canvases. Various numbers in various fonts in the colors they are in my head.

I usually paint in acrylic but I think maybe acrylic won't make me happy with these. I've hated oils in the past but may have to go back to them.

Anyway, is this a stupid idea, do you think?

It's extremely personal, whether that's good or bad.

Well, in personal terms I think it makes all the difference as to whether I can muster any art or not. If everything just was what it was, I'd have no incentive to create.

For some reason, I am itching to paint a dark, bluish kelly-green 9. And then a red-orange 5.

I didn't mean personal things are bad - just that the meaning behind it is such that other people couldn't possibly appreciate it as much as you can. But go for it. I always like to see people doing things.

I'd be interested to see that. If you could get the colours just right, it would be a prefect glimpse inside your brain.

Soo, I've decided to learn to draw properly before I start classes again, as it was really holding me back and damaging my confidence. I'm working through a book called 'Drawing on the right side of the brain' by Betty Edwards. So far, it seems to be good, but I have yet to get to anything concrete.

Does anyone have hints/tips/advice/books to help me out? Much appreciated.

buy a few thick pads of 18 x 24 newsprint and do lots and lots of scribble gestures, focusing on being as fast and wild as you possibly can. fill up an entire thing of it, with multiple drawings on each page. Make damn sure you draw from life. It's important to have fun and just concentrate on speed, looseness, and drawing large. You should be able to have a reasonably detailed gesture completed in a minute's time. Then bust out a sketchbook and draw every day. don't worry about making "good" drawings, just keep focusing on speed, drawing with your arm as opposed to your wrist, while slowly and surely getting more accurate over time through repetition. You have to commit to it, though. it's like weightlifting, it only works if you're committed
