View Full Version : CHAT ROOM THREAD VOTE: RELAUNCH OR REMAIN?
Mockery
Jan 4th, 2008, 06:23 PM
The Chat Room thread here in General Blabber has just gone past 30k worth of pages. Quite a massive thread indeed! So now the question is this: should we put it in Thread Backups and create a brand new chat room thread here in General Blabber as part of the new I-Mockery? Or, should we leave the chat room thread as it currently stands in General Blabber.
I-Mockers, I leave this life-altering decision in your incapable hands.

I just did some speed tests on the various threads. Here are the results!
Median Base thread loading time: 1.47s
Median PYPH thread loading time: 1.83s
Median Chat thread loading time: 2.75s
Therefore, the amount of increased time it takes to read these threads (over new ones) is:
PYPH: 0.36 seconds
Chat: 1.28 seconds
Also, the amount by which each post increases a thread's loading time is ~.000037 seconds.
In conclusion, the loading time is negligible and this thread is important because it shows the world how serious we are about wasting our time. That is all.

why would you kill a chat room thread? really? it's much easier to just go there to search if i knew it was in there. it would be much easier to keep it for reference purpose, and loading the thread makes no difference of a wait for me. Same with PYPH and Let's all get to know each other. Another purpose it serves is that it's the largest thread on the boards, and I feel that it would be counter-productive in building history here to restart it, even if the original is backed up.

blahblahblah, stop whining about it and just cast yer votes. I'm not gonna move the thread if the vote to move it only wins by one vote or some shit, it has to be an overwhelming vote swing one way or the other. None of that 51% to 49% shit.
And regardless of what the outcome is, to those of you bitching about new users and their so-called "invalid" opinions: shut up. We get it. You've been here longer than them and therefore everybody else should think you're very special. Frankly, I'll take the new users who've actually been adding something to discussions on the site instead of 2 people in the chat room thread responding to themselves for an entire page. We've got some great "vets" on the forum, but we've got plenty that rarely contribute anything to a discussion, even though they're fully capable of doing so.

As I mentioned before, it would be to give it a new beginning, to encourage new forum members to join in to chat and yes, why not reduce the additional load time if possible (which despite "the word of science" does exceed 1-3 seconds more often than not for me). But I've left it up to the users, it's your forum too, so you guys decide as a whole.

Possibly, but I think more discouraging to them is users like Publover quoting everybody who posts in the "new users: introduce yourself" thread and bitching about them. Not exactly the kind of thing that's gonna make new users want to join in... and if they do, it's just gonna create some whiny bitchfest between the two of 'em.

He'd routinely go back to 'delete' his old posts, so I took away his edit button. I did it to one other person too (for the same reasons) but I can't remember who.
The 'problems' with the chat thread making new users feel unwelcome isn't a chat thread problem, it's a problem with those users. Pub quoting people and making fun of them only happens in the chat thread because he doesn't post in other threads - again, you are describing a problem with Pub, not a problem with that thread.
It also seems like you favor the new people over the older ones, unconditionally, and that only leads to resentment and cancelled accounts. One guy casting a vote for removing the thread on account of "i felt lik bein a dik lol" believe it or not should NOT carry equal weight to the people that have supported the forum for years. On the other hand, new people like Tadao who can actually express themselves in the King's English SHOULD have their opinions held on equal ground.

I also encourage rog to run his own speed tests on the thread - Firefox has a counter at the lower right that tells you how long a page takes to load, so open a fairly empty thread a few times and then open the last page of chat a few times and compare the results.
The speed is dependent on the server hosting the database, not your computer, so the results should match mine.

Ok, yeah deleting your threads isn't allowed. If you want to go back and correct something in your post or add onto it, that's one thing, but we don't allow users to delete posts.
again, you are describing a problem with Pub, not a problem with that thread.
There's a difference between Pub and that thread? Sometimes I can't tell. o.O
It also seems like you favor the new people over the older ones, unconditionally
Hardly. There are only a few older users in there who I see as problematic and thankfully they're primarily contained to that particular thread. Most of the people on this forum are genuinely good posters who want to have fun discussions, both old and new. Don't go making false accusations or assumptions about who I favor just because my thinking the chat room could use a relaunch doesn't coincide with your own opinions on the matter.
Chojin
Jan 4th, 2008, 08:53 PM

Indeed they do and I stated earlier in the thread that I wouldn't move it if the vote to move it was only won by a few votes. It'd have to be a landslide vote to move it, which doesn't appear to be happening right now since it's closer to 60/40 in favor of keeping it as is. So what are you worried about exactly?
Chojin
Jan 4th, 2008, 09:13 PM
