I'm making a marathon mod in Max Payne 2 (Max Payne 1 and 2 were just released on Steam the other day too, guys, go get it :o) and I'll be dumping screenshots here while I link people who might be interested in this crap to this thread!

I'm still having difficulties getting 3D Studio Max 5.1 SP1 and Character Studio 4.1 working (you need to use those old programs to get Max Payne modelling done), so I'm using the sniper rifle model for the SPNKR-X18 SSM Launcher for now :picklehat

Is this using the Source Engine?

I only have DoD and CS, and neither of them are Source.

Chojin
Jan 6th, 2008, 10:21 PM
Max Payne 1 and 2 use the MAX-FX engine, which I think was only used to make those two games.

Chojin, what other games do mod for?

Chojin
Jan 7th, 2008, 12:40 AM
I don't really consider myself a 'modder', but I have modded Quake 1 before ;<

Usually I work on my own games, but I'm trying to do this all by myself, which means that I need the base programming in place.

Ahh. Thats probably difficult as fuck. I used to play a sorta MMO tank game called Wulfram that was built from the ground up by one man.

Just put a preview up on youtube. They completely molested the quality, but you might be able to make out some shapes.

I give it two thumbs up, though I believe it's a bit niche. Which is to say it probably won't be really popular. If I ever find a copy of Max Payne 2, I'll give it a go. Good work, dude.

Chojin
Jan 7th, 2008, 05:16 PM
Well, the purpose of the project is really to teach me 3DS Max and to have something for my portfolio. I wasn't really planning on it's INTERNET RELEASE when I started to work on it.

Why would you use Max Payne 2's engine to make an FPS? :/

Surely that's just making a a lot more work for yourself.

Forgive me if I'm wrong here but the camera in the video indicates a third person shooter

I can't believe you're that thick.

Guitar Woman
Jan 7th, 2008, 05:29 PM
what

Am I missing something here, because I though all Chojin was doing was modding MP2 to have a deathmatch mode that looked like Marathon

MetalMilitia
Jan 7th, 2008, 05:29 PM
I guess Chojin didn't say it was a Marathon remake, just a marathon mod.

I thought that was pretty badass. Things look really defined for a game that old...

Max Payne 2 isn't that old.

Spetsnaz
Jan 7th, 2008, 05:54 PM
How old is it then? I realize I could research it myself, but laziness comes into play.

Well first of all it isn't an FPS, it's more of a RE4-style camera - what kids are called 2nd person these days. Max Payne 2's engine runs extremely well (better than even MP1) and would be ideal for Wii production, with some modification. I'm just getting myself used to it and the other aspects of design with this mod.

How old is [Max Payne 2] then? I realize I could research it myself, but laziness comes into play.
I believe it came out in 2002-2003. It was one of the first games to include Havok ragdoll physics.

I can't imagine the engine has changed in that time. I like the second person camera view.

I think this could get ridiculously popular as a Max Payne mod.

It was brought up on SA the other day and the Marathon community seems to be pretty happy about it :D

Glad you like it too ;>

Says it was removed due to a terms of use violation?

Anyway, there's an update on the dev blog for this game and I'll have a new video up within the week, most likely :o

it was basically the first part of your youtube but with an ad for a ringtone website pasted over the bottom sixth or so of the screen, i know that i reported it >:

Yeah. It was probably removed because there was a banner at the bottom for Max Payne/Marathon ringtones.

Which is very funny in retrospect.

no shit, I'd murder a dog for a marathon ringtone

man you just need to get a phone that lets you make your own ringtones for it :( no dog murder is required

Just uploaded a new deathmatch video of Marathon//Max to Gametrailers. It's embedded in my development blog:

You might have to scroll down a bit to find it.

Slick, very slick. You've persuaded me to buy the Max Payne pack on Steam.

I wonder, though. Is this going to be a strict throwback to Marathon or will you offer your take on it? Not to say that a Marathon mod for Max Payne isn't unique, but the old school FPS games of yore started to meld together, their environments had a sameness to them. Is it going to be a deathmatch only affair, or will there be some sort of single player story involved.

Chojin
Mar 29th, 2008, 02:06 PM
Right now my plan is to have a 3-4 level single player game and a bunch of deathmatch levels. I don't want to get too involved with the single campaign since I'm mostly doing this project for my portfolio and the max-fx engine (and the lack of multiplayer) isn't going to allow this game as much exposure as it could get.

Thanxx, I'm updating the blog soon with a direct render of it. As I'm learning the ropes of 3d studio max, I'm learning how to keep polycounts down, work the smooth groups better, and UV map decently, so I'm pretty proud of it.

This is an I-MOCKERY EXCLUSIVE SCREENSHOT WEEEOEOWOWOEOW because this picture mostly sucks, but you can get a much better look at the SPNK-R rocket launcher here than in other pictures. You can even see the comfortable shoulder padding!

there's more content in the blog post, so if you care, go read it there.

Looks comfy. In the last shot, are those random barrels or shotgun shells?

Chojin
Jun 26th, 2008, 07:09 PM
Shotgun shells - all the ammo in Marathon is comically huge when it's on the ground so that you can actually spot it.

Most of what's taking me so long on this mod now is my complete lack of references both in 3d studio max and in the max payne modding 'community' (I did find a couple helpful people on 3drealms' forums, but they mostly work with Max Payne 1 because it's more mod-friendly).

But I could really use some help with 3d studio max - nothing in specific, just crits and some insight on faster and better ways to do things. Thus far, I've been figuring almost everything about this mod out on my own, and that takes a lot of time.

So, uh, let me know if you run into anyone like that, I guess!

I hope you like being lost.

And motion sick, to a lesser extent, since the "3D" environments bend when you look up or down. :lol
The story is awesome, though, and aside from having the standard "what the fuck was I doing, again?" syndrome common to games with huge levels it's also pretty fun.

I also like the rocket launcher effects in the video. Half the games I play these days don't look that cool, for whatever reason.

Chojin
Sep 23rd, 2008, 06:54 PM
thx thx.

i was really disappointed by the rocket launcher in TF2, it looks, sounds, and generally is wimpy ;< marathon's launcher's always been a whole bag of machismo, so I tried my best to recreate it.

606 mb version of that video on the way. I am DISSATISFIED with youtube's quality.
