But I don't know what games are worth getting. The games themselves are more expensive and rarer than the system, so I'm going to be very selective in what I get. I've already got my eye on Shenmue and Marvel v. Capcom, but what else is good?

Marvel Vs Capcom 2 :rolleyes, Power Stone (which is one of my favorite fighting games), Power Stone 2, Ikaruga and Jet Grind Radio!

Why don't you just download and burn them? They're all easily obtainable online. My favourites: Rez, Capcom vs. SNK 2, Ikaruga, Shenmue, and all of those Japanese shooting games released after the DC was officially dead.

Well, they used to be easily obtainable online. Where the hell would you get them now?

Mininova has some.

I like Powerstone, Jet Grind Radio, Evolution, House of the Dead 1 & 2, et cetera.

Damn straight, best in the series.

Everything else mentioned here thus far is also good.

If you can find Fatal Fury: Mark of the Wolves or Street Fighter III: Third Strike(avoid the easier to find SFIII: Double Impact), get them immediately and don't look back. Don't. Look. Back.

In fact, pretty much any of the many 2de fighters released on the DC are good.

I thought the first Sonic Adventure was decent, at least the the most decent of any of the 3d Sonic games. I know that doesn't say much.

Resident Evil: Code Veronica was a great RE game.

I'll probably think of more later. The Dreamcast was the most underrated console of all time, considering how many great games it packed in such a short period of time. I call it the "Sandy Koufax of Game Consoles". The analogy makes sense if you're familiar with Koufax, trust me.

POWER STONE 2
It was even an anime for a while, it was that good! :)
I also suggest Blue... Strike? It was a neat resident evil without the scaryness game.

I got one today :hat

I heard that people used to put NES ROMs on these things. How'd they do that?

Sword of the Berserk.

Yes, that game is one of the reasons i want a DC. Just to tear some shit up as the black swordsman.

Also look into getting some of those shooters that came out when the system died out. Ikaruga is good.

And if you like wrestling games, and dont mind japanese text, the best Wrestling game on the system is undoubtedly Fire Pro Wrestling D. The first game in the series to introduce weapons and lightbulb/Barbedwire matches. :D

Dont forget Capcom VS SNK 2: Mark of the Millenium 2001 :)

edit: For the NES rom thing, you just need to make a self booting DC disc (or use a boot disc) and burn a CD with all of the games you want with the DC emulator on it. I dont really know how its done, but its something like that.

I remember that every Dreamcast game had camera problems.

Especially the Spawn game, which was otherwise kinda fun ;<

I think you mean Blue Stinger.

Anyway, I recommend:

MDK2 - Not an acryonym, that's actually the name of the game. It controls like an FPS, which takes some getting used to, but once you do you'll find one of the best 3D action games out there. If you aren't turned away by the difficulty, that is. Oh, and stay away from that bastardized PS2 port.

Elemental Gimmick Gear - A solid adventure game with gorgeous graphics.

Chuchu Rocket - Critter saving puzzler!

And while I haven't finished it yet, there's Mars Matrix. It's a bullet hell shooter from the folks behind the Giga Wing games where you can absorb just about any shot and hurl them back at your enemies. Hard as hell though, I haven't reached the fourth boss. I really liked what I played, though.

All this talk about great DC games and nobody mentions the superior Project Justice (Rival Schools 2)?? What the hell?? This is easily one of the best 3D games EVER. Also, Street Fighter Alpha 3 for the DC was kickass in so many ways.

But I agree: you're probably going to have to download most of them off of newsgroups or something and it's worth it (since there's no copy protection at all). But the DC is a fine system that'll bring you tons of entertainment.

Skies of Arcadia
Record of Lodoss War
Phantasy Star Online episodes 1 + 2 (they can be played offline and aren't too shabby)
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Soul Calibur
Grandia 1 + 2
Crazy Taxi

Here's a couple I own but haven't played, but look like they might be interesting:

Bangai-O - It's either an action game or a shooter from Treasure.

Omikron: The Nomad Soul - An adventure game that stars David Bowie.

Gunbird 2 and Cannon Spike. Two Capcom shooters. If you can get them for free, I highly recommend.

Oh fuck, seconding Omikron.

Although the PC version would be way less of a hassle to get.

i kind of hated omikron on pc :( the story was great but the gameplay was godawful (maybe it is better on dc, idk)

I had huge issues with the fighting system on the PC version of Omikron (I think it was only called Nomad Soul in the UK, but if it's the one with David Bowie then it is the one I'm thinking of). :(

Jan 15th, 2008, 04:12 AM
yeah omikron the nomad soul

i think i had just gotten to the part where d. bowie first shows up and then i got frustrated and i haven't picked it back up since :( maybe i should give it another shot if the cds still work :(

i agree. sure, the voice acting is a little bit on the cheesy side, but where else can you play as a Bruce Willis lookalike who can pick up a tuna and bludgeon enemies with it?

I got ChuChu Rocket :)

No sign of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, though. :[ I don't wanna eBay it because it seems like every copy of any DC game they sell either doesn't have the manual or the packaging or is exorbitantly expensive.

Codiekitty
Jan 23rd, 2008, 02:03 PM
Ooh, jeez, I forgot Mars Matrix normally runs $30 or more.

But MDK2 and Elemental Gimmick Gear are normally less than $10 (I got my MDK2 for $7 way back when Gamestop was dumping their Dreamcast stuff, not like that helps you though), and there's somebody on eBay right now selling both of them, and a few other games like Grandia 2 and Shenmue: http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZmember974051

I had a friend who would stay over at my house all the time since I had a few good computers and a broadband connection when they were new, and he'd spend every day monopolizing my internet connection to pirate DC games. And through all of the games he downloaded, the only ones I liked were Crazy Taxi, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, NFL 2k1, and MVC2.

It seemed like every single DC game had camera issues, some more crippling than others. The controller was also made of tempered glass and would shred your hands to pieces if you played anything too long, ESPECIALLY games that required use of the d-pad.

I'd make fun of the system every day and he'd be all like YOU'LL SEE. ALL OF YOU NAYSAYERS WILL SEE.

And then all the piracy killed the system. For those of you who didn't know.
