View Full Version : Does anyone here like Power Metal?

topic. I am a huge fan of this genre, from Sonata Arctica to the more obscure Twilightning. If there's anyone even remotely interested on this, I can suggest a few awesome bands!

Are Dragon Force power metal?
If so, I hate it.
Xystus

Yes it is, but it is honestly the worst example of power metal you could find. The thing is that a whole lot of power metal is bad, but some gems bright here and there - not every power metal song consists of non-stop guitars with incessant screaming.

Funny, I always considered Twilightning to be in the exact same boat as Dragonforce and the cockroach-like Rhapsody of Fire.
That being said, I greatly enjoy instrumental shredders like Gary Hoey and Joe Stump (NOT Inglefuck Malmsteen), though I'm not sure they would go under the genre of "Power Metal".
God, I'm a fucking dork.

ugh, really? I really enjoy Twilightning (I'll be the first to admit their lyrics are fucking crazy though) but I am not a fan of Dragonforce. What about Xystus, do you know them? They are quite underrated imho.
Do I smell an Iron Maiden reference on your custom title?
executioneer; I am not a big fan of Blind Guardian either, but have you ever heard Sonata Arctica? If what you're asking is "is it power metal" then yes, it is.
Grislygus
Jan 10th, 2008, 07:06 PM
The reference you detect is to a man by the name of Coleridge, and the spectacularly good shit he smoked with Reverend Charles Dodgson. Though I do like Maiden's version.
To answer any further questions about my support of goth or melodramatic D&D metal bands, "No."

Dragonforce speeds up their album recordings to make it look like they can play faster.
For example, Through the Fires and Flames... If you try to play it on GH 3, or just even listen to it, you get the idea that Dragonforce is some insanely fast super shredding band.
You watch them live, you know this is very, very untrue.
And as far as Power Metal goes, I fucking love Battlelore.

The thing with Dragonforce is, while the guitar work is undoubtedly technically impressive it doesn't manage to disguise the fact that the actual songs are really dreadful.

Jan 12th, 2008, 01:50 PM
Lyrically and originality wise, their songs suck.

I worship Blind Guardian.
I don't care for Dragonforce. They sound too fake, especially after watching several videos of them failing to play their own material properly live.
Sonata Arctic is wayyy too limp-wristed for my tastes.
off the top of my head, Power Metal bands I like:
Lost Horizon
The Dogma
Gamma Ray
Helloween (up to Keepers II only)
Kamelot
Iced Earth
Hibria
Nevermore

I tend to like most power metal, though I've heard some pretty awful shit :lol
I like Dragonforce despite what people say. I don't really care if they don't sound the same live as the do in the studio. I mean, it's the STUDIO with a lot of machines and special recording devices and they can do as many takes as they want.
I think a lot of the negativity they get tends to stem from the fact that they're getting some mainstream attention (the song on Guitar Hero 3, etc) and once that happens, fans of certain genres get all pissy about who else is now listening to the music.
And power metal lyrics are supposed to be cheesy, IMO. Like Manowar and Rhapsody. >:

They are! If there's something I don't like about them, it's the lyrics. They are completely insane. However the sweet guitar makes up for it :)
@kilgore cod; a friend sent me "Love you to Death" by Kamelot, and I think it is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard. Could you recommend me a good album by them?
Also it is weird because I like Helloween but only post-Keepers II lol
ps.: Last.fm is a good site if you want to check bands out. I leave you with a song by Xystus, Why Me? (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PX3AQF-fXxY) - this is probably their heaviest song, if you would like to check out more stuff by them, visit http://www.last.fm/music/Xystus

That's from their latest album, Ghost Opera. Its a good album, but not my favorite by them. I recommend starting out with Karma and Epica then if you like what you hear check out The Fourth Legacy and The Black Halo.

I only listen to a little Power Metal, but what I listen to I love. I can't believe no one has mentioned (in my eyes) the top 3 Power Metal bands ever.
1. Dream Evil (I fucking love Dream Evil)
2. Hammerfall (Not as good as DE but still pretty awesome)
3. Stratovarios (" ")
I hate Dragonforce with a passion, the notion that playing a guitar really fast makes you good is fucking stupid.

Power metal used to be very different. There was a time when it referred to things like Jag Panzer's Ample Destruction and as Trash brought up, Manowar (who aren't nearly as homo as most of the bands I see listed, their first 4 albums are untouchable), when the music was supposed to be powerful and not just guitar wankery and with a wailing douche trying to imitate Bruce Dickinson.
I honestly despise most bands that call themselves power metal at this point, it's just another buzz word now.
And I do like Helloween and Ramma Gay.

My mother says that Dragonforce "is not music". You lot seem to agree with her. I wholeheartedly like Dio and Nightwish though. Nightwish's cover of Andrew Lloyd Webber's title track from the Phantom of the Opera musical made theatrical cheese dark and brutal, whereas Dio invented the \m/ symbol.

Well Dio's Holy Diver album is just amazing.
I feel like I should like Blind Guardian, being a huge nerd and all, but I don't.
Nightwish ain't bad, though.

Need to listen to 3 inches of blood, one vocalist with falsetto, another vocalist with growls works so well together. Listen to their Advance and conquer album.
On the other topic I would consider Dragonforce more speed metal though.

Whats wrong with Dragonforce?
Sound great live and on their albums. Can't say they sounded any slower live when I saw them either. Weather they're Power Metal or not doesn't matter to me.
Seriously they don't have to be to everyones liking, nor do they have to be the best band in the world but they don't deserve the slating they get imo.

If it's any consulation (and in the band's defense), the 3 Inches drummer got roughed up worse, by security, than Nigel and he was fired. Anyways, it's nice to know that someone other than me and Lars Ulrich listens to Saxon.

I saw them (3 Inches of Blood) play not long before that all happened and they didn't do much for me at all. I had heard a few songs of theirs before but the 2 vocalist thing is really gay to me. Their performance was average and very forgettable, and I was actually sober through the entire show. They were nice enough people but sadly being friendly isn't enough for me to like a band's music.
I'm well aware they fired him, which was smart of the band to do, they might have faced a massive boycott in Europe for that. You don't fuck with Saxon.

Some power metal is ok, I've only actually got albums by one band (Windir) and I rather enjoy them, so I'll probably start looking for some more in the near future.
Up until recently though, all my experiences with power metal have been pretty shit. There's a lot of crap out there, I just don't know the names of the bands/songs to stay away from so there'll probably be a hell of a lot of trial and error finding the decent stuff.
