weird, that's the first game that comes to mind for me too. there are some things i like better about cv64, some of the levels are longer or more difficult, camera is a little better, and the typos are weird and funny. but i was rocking out over lod the second i started it. ghost ship level, remix of sinking old sanctuary, boss reference to chi no rondo. yeah that game was great

I agree with the post above the post above this one! :lol

I wish I could agree with the post above this one, but I only played C64 once as a rental and didn't get very far, so I really don't know how LoD compares :(

I'm a fan of the Crash Bandicoot games. The early ones for the PS1 ;(

Emu
Feb 24th, 2008, 01:23 PM
Everybody likes those ;( Crash more than anything is the part of my Ps1 collection that gets played the most. Crash Team Racing is ace :eek

I thought Deus Ex Machina: Invisable War for the Xbox was pretty awesome. It was cool how you could literally kill anybody you wanted. For instance, in this school, I got in a firefight, and the children in the school sucked at running away from grenades. ;(

Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES) and Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero (N64)

I only played those once at a friends house, but they seemed pretty cool. Especially because his game had a glitch that if you ever for one second stopped running, he would only be able to crawl from that point on, which actually made the game cooler for me.
But yeah, they don't really fit in this thread as they aren't at all underrated but very popular. Oh well.

Crash games belong in the overrated games thread for being terrible

Also, I think I'm the only person who likes both Longest Journey games ;(

uh

OK hotshot can you tell me why Super Mario Sunshine, a popular game that received universally favorable reviews and is still talked about today, is considered underrated? Or are you going to fess up about the fact that you actually don't know what that word means.

Sunshine is pretty much universally hated by gamers, but it's not bad at all!

Certainly better than that pile of ass that was Galaxy.

Zomboid
Feb 24th, 2008, 07:01 PM
I also loved cv64. I don't know why everyone seemed to hate it. There was a fucking chainsaw maniac in a hedge maze. We hadn't seen anything like that since zombies ate my neighbors.

I'm sorry, this is not officially a "Most underrated games" thread until Psychonauts is mentioned. Luckily I just saved all your asses before it got booted.

DuFresne
Feb 24th, 2008, 07:52 PM
Well, i dunno. Psychonauts could definately fall into a "most underplayed game" list, but almost everyone who actually plays it likes it. This is more for games that got tons of NEGATIVE publicity that was undeserved, rather than well-liked games that just didn't have much publicity to begin with.

This was a good game.. A couple other games that should be brought up..

Suikoden 1 & 2 (Ps1)

Shining Force 2 (Sega)

Beyond the Beyond (Ps1 first RPG)

Lunar: SSS (Sega CD) : Side note : This game was only remade on the ps1 due to the massive cult following and limited availability of the Sega CD and the time of production

Suikoden 1 & 2 (Ps1)

Shining Force 2 (Sega)
How is Suikoden 2 underrated? It's only hailed as one of the best RPGs for the PSX/ever and costs $130+ on eBay!

And even though I myself thought Shining Force was lame it's often called the reason to get a Genesis, and people must be aware of the sequel since it's more expensive than the first one. (Regarding the actual game, unfortunately my copy of SF2 has a bad battery so I haven't been able to play much of it, but it seemed better than the first one.)

- Final Fantasy 9. I think the game would have clicked more if the main character was actually Vivi instead of the saiyan-wannabe. Blond swordsmen are cute and fun for a good 3 or 4 games but this would have really divided a fine line of moron and moron lite.

- Castlevania 64. Especially when you compare it to Curse of Darkness (Or Lament of Innocence if you thought that game sucked as well.)

- Tobal No. 1. I really liked this game for some reason. Simple to play, the characters were wierd enough to be awesome (Breakdancin' robot for the win.) and the dungeon was the best.

- Destruction Derby 2. This game would have been pure awesome in a jewel case had it had multiplayer.

- Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. this, besides Mortal Kombat 2, Street fighter 2, and SMash bros., is one of the best 2D fighters I have ever played.

I think PSX and 64 games have a trend of being underrated.

Guitar Woman

Final Fantasy 9 is on my top 3 list of worst games ever!

DuFresne
Feb 27th, 2008, 10:15 PM
Ha, I bought Final Fantasy 9 used for a few bucks about two years ago and have yet to even pop it in my machine. It just looks kind of bad and uninteresting. :(

I think Bloodrayne is a pretty good one especially considering you can probably pick up a copy of it for less than five bucks (I got mine for 2). The synopsis on the back of the box smells of Anne Rice but the games not like that at all, there's alot to love here. Gameplays kind of crude, not broken though, and the graphics are pretty bad by todays standards. Its not a great game but its a pleasant surprise.

I always thought E.V.O. was pretty darned underrated.

I also disliked FF9.

I got to the second disk and realized that I didn't give a flying fuck about anything that was going on. Of course, I loved Legend of Dragoon for the timing/combat thingamajigger, so my personal taste is admittedly pretty fucked in the head.

Zomboid
Feb 28th, 2008, 01:13 PM
LoD kicked ass. That was one of my favorite games at the time.

Grislygus

My friends and I would play that whenever we got bored. And when we got bored of that it was straight to Ace Combat.

If LOD had gotten a decent translation team, it could've easily been the PS1's best RPG.

Roggs
Feb 28th, 2008, 01:42 PM
Crimson Sea 2 - PS2

Psi Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy - PS2

These are the two big ones that come to mind for me. They're innovative and fun, but I don't know anyone else who's even heard of them.

Horray, a thread i can get into

- Thousand Arms. One of my top 5 best RPG's for the PSone, and i dont know why i like it so much.

- Columns. The only puzzle game to rival tetris in my mind.

- Lunar(any game in the series excluding Dragon Song). Just because no one i know has played them

- Tobal no1. Why the fuck did i sell this game. I missed grabing that dude with the tail and swinging him around.

- WWF In your House. Ultimate Warrior.

- Rhapsody a Musical Adventure.

Oh, I have one: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codename_Eagle

Don't know why this game wasn't more popular. Although I only ever played it in a LAN so chances are it had horrible networking or something.

- Lunar(any game in the series excluding Dragon Song). Just because no one i know has played themThen you're not going to the right places.

The PSX games fluctuate in price, but I've seen times when Silver Star Story was going for, like, $80 complete. Right now it seems like Eternal Blue is going for that much and Silver Star is $40.

GameFAQs (http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/psx/review/197808.html) has a lot of reviews for it, and only four of them (I didn't count individually, just scanned) gave it less than an 8. Most are 9s and 10s. It's almost universally praised by game magazines, like GameInformer which had that dumbfounding line about how its cliche, by-the-numbers story was refreshing.

I haven't played it, but I have it on good authority it's actually terrible, generic, and tedious.
