View Full Version : THINK OF FUN THINGS WE CAN DO WITH THE BOARD

In all seriousness - reading over the boards recently, someone asked what the difference was these days between i-mockery and the various hellholes of the internet, and I'm honestly hard-pressed to offer a distinction.

So, I would like to open the floor to suggestions on how we can improve the boards.

And use your inside voice, because I will be heavily moderating this thread.

*POSITIVE VIBES.

If you're having trouble telling I-Mock apart from the rest of the internet, look at three or four threads on the Articles Discussion forum.

That thread is the safety valve that keeps the boards from reaching critical lame. We need it!

Unlock the chat room thread, man. You're scaring me.

But in all seriousness while I've not been here for as long as some other people I'd say that the majority of the original posters which made this forum what it was back in the day have long since stopped posting for various reasons and as such it's unlikely you ever COULD get back the uniqueness of i-mockery as it was.
Which isn't to say the forum is now worthless. I've been through a ton of forums in the three years I've been posting here and yet despite probably getting the harshest reception here of all the boards I've signed up to over the years this is the one I've stuck with.

The thing which sets this place apart from the other hellholes is that everyone is quite concious of avoiding 'net clichés and repetition, which are the worst things about the 'net.
It almost goes too far sometimes with most members being terrified of admitting to liking any current internet fad for fear of being ousted from the forum forever for being to mainstream in their e-comedy taste. But I think it's better this way than the other forums I've been on were posting "FTW!!!11" is considered a constructive comment.

I think that maybe putting an end to shit like "THIS THREAD IS NOW ABOUT HOT GUYS WHO WE WANT TO FUCK" might cut down on the random pictures, hilarious captions, and general derailing of regular discussions. Also, maybe stop allowing random pictures of 15 year old girls with photoshopped jizz all over their face (I'm looking at you, liquid).

In general, it seems like the boards used to offer more in the way of decent threads because they didn't get filled with all of the 4chan type shit.

Of course, I guess we can just wait until the other 3 out of 10 posts are variations of "i like/hate him/her/it ;< :mario."

Guitar Woman

Yeah seriously that picture in the "what are you listening to thread" was borderline kiddy-porn. I couldn't see any humour in it whatsoever, and I dare say neither would any of of colleagues had I opened that thread at work as I often do.

I don't think people should be able to post stuff like that or this place will end up like those chan sites that are all about teenagers laughing at how outrageous they're being in the Internet.

What was that thread even about before that? And how many pictures were posted since then? Three?

Of course, I guess we can just wait until the other 3 out of 10 posts are variations of "i like/hate him/her/it ;< :mario."

Can you explain what you're talking about here? To be frank, most of the trolling I've witnessed lately has come from you.

Tadao
Mar 17th, 2008, 08:06 PM
What sets this place apart from the rest (for me), is that a lot of intelligent flamers post here. This was the only place of worth for a good argument. You can't get that at 4chan, etc... Yes, I love arguing on the internet. I think everyone here does. Why else would we come here? All humor is insulting. I-Mockery is the highest caliber of insult available. Perhaps all the comparing needs to be flipped. They need to be compared to you.

Perhaps mocking forum users is not the way to go anymore. That would be sad. In my parts of the internet you were held as gods. I don't know why you took away the mock wars forum, I came back right as you closed it. I came here for just that reason. I can easily turn my mock off and be a productive poster, but I don't think people come here for that.

I guess the question is, what would you like? I know it's not an easy question and that this thread is probably created to find what is bugging you. I hope you find it.

I wouldn't have a problem with the board becoming an intelligent flaming forum, but that's not really what I'm seeing go on lately. There's really a whole lot of nothing going on. Not even mocking.

Mock wars was closed because that forum was god awful. You never really needed permission to make fun of people in any forum, anyway.

I don't know what it was about before. I can't remember that part. What I do remember is opening it up to see you mentioning how emo guys are hot, followed by posting and commenting on a few pictures. Oh, and at some point the title of the thread changed to something about cock sucking. So, yeah. Good work.

I've been trolling? You fucking ASK for me to comment on something when you post "GEE I CAN'T BELIEVE WE HAVE A WII THREAD WHERE ZOMBOID HASN'T COMMENTED". Not to mention the fact that you went around in 3 or 4 other threads and made similar comments.

It seems most of the best "mockers" are just bored of it because they've already seen the stereotypical annoying noobie poster a thousand times before and there are only so many ways of saying "You're fucking stupid. Shut up".

I also think that there aren't many arguments any more because the majority of the regular posters are all in the same clique that socialise outside of the forum (though games and such) and calling anyone out will probably turn a lot of people against you.

Mar 17th, 2008, 08:29 PM
The latter was in response to some shenanigans you pulled in the smash bros thread. I'm not claiming that I have absolutely no part in arguments around here, but I do claim that you create and escalate those arguments to the point that it kills threads. If I recall, you were banned for doing it before.

And in my opinion, saying "a whole 8 posts in a wii thread without zomboid" isn't out of line. Consider:
1. You seem to seek out and troll any and all Wii threads on the forum
2. You came in immediately after that
3. Did you really consider that an invitation? Do you have absolutely no self-control?

If the latter was in response to something in a different thread, keep it in the other fucking thread. Your petty little nintendo fueled rage against me doesn't need to go all over the boards.

1 - I don't seek out and troll threads. In the smash bros thread I made both positive and negative comments and it just escalated, as usual. Oh, and I think you were a part of that one, too!

2 - I'd been reading it and just hadn't made a comment until that point.

3 - I was thinking what I posted the entire time, but yeah, to me that was an invitation to go and say what I said, which was that he should seek alternative methods of exercise.

Chojin
Mar 17th, 2008, 08:33 PM
Yeah, really. Back on topic.

*And Zomboid, I will reiterate that we don't need to hear about how much you hate the Wii in every Wii thread. No one asked you to post there. Seriously. I made a joke, there was no call to defend your honor.

I would offer to stay out of 360/PS3 threads in return, but I haven't been doing anything like that. Again, use some self-control. Someone mentioning your name in a thread is not a license for you to turn it to shit.

And that will be my last post on this topic.

That comment was after you and chojin kept up with your "NO, THE WII IS AWSUM! REALLY! IT IS!" over and over. If it were able to be a civil argument about the system's merits and it's negative qualities, that'd be just fine by me. But as I said, you're fanboys and you can't do that.

What happened was that rules are one thing, the collective is the another. When a lot of us arrive, we tend to watch how people are and base what we do on your examples. I haven't seen a calling out thread since I've been here, so I didn't create one. I noticed you guys wait till someone does something really stupid and then smack them in that thread. So I did likewise. This is your home and I'm a guest. I follow your examples. I LEARNED IT FROM YOU DAD! i LEARNED IT FROM YOU!

I'm pretty sure they just have it so that new members don't go around spamming the fuck out of the place, which would happen even more frequently there. If someone feels superior for being able to post more than someone else, that's their own fault and I think that they'd be called on it here.

The thread thing isn't a huge problem, no. It happens every now and then but it's nothing that needs SWIFT ACTION or anything.

I think if new members had their posts limited, they'd maybe realize that we don't want them running around posting everywhere. Instead of getting banned, they might just turn into posters capable of contributing something worthwhile every now and then.

Esuohlim

I feel that the overall mood of the forums has changed drastically as of late, and I don't want to necessarily put the blame on the whole "being complete jerks to new people drives away business so stop being complete jerks to new people unless they really deserve it" imposition put forth after all the major site changes, but I was never too keen on that idea in the first place. When brand new people used to post threads, even if they were perfectly legitimate, they would often get derailed immediately and usually with hilarious results. Nowadays threads like those get taken seriously and are therefore not as fun.

That's not to say some current people don't need a kick in the ass every once in a while either. As a specific example, saying something like "I'm glad Cartoon Network brought back Mikaymoyi, this makes up for Chooky Chokey Sami Whammy" or a thousand "Haves you know I can score big time buds you think Pubs I am an high as kites now :420" used to elicit ridicule, and now it will most likely get ignored. I don't know, everyone just seems more apathetic about mocking other people, and when people don't get adequately mocked for the stupid shit they do they eventually think that said stupid shit is acceptable.

And I don't mean to pick on GW specifically, but a lot of what he posts seems to only be appreciated by Chojin and vice versa. Sometimes it just seems like you two have ongoing inside jokes that nobody gets. This is of course a personal opinion since I'm not too into video games and a whole lot of it goes over my head. It might not for most people, but this is just what I notice.

I agree with that but I think that the same thing can be said for a few other couples or groups as well. It's like 3-6 people are always replying back and forth and there's not a whole lot of times where the rest of the members want to/are able to join in the discussion, if you can call it that.

emu, can you explain how the probation system works? I have a somethingawful account, but I know better than to try to get a straight answer out of any of them.

It's pretty simple actually. Internet Cliches, extremely low content posts that add nothing to the discussion, memes, Chuck Norris shit, general thread shitting, etc. are severely frowned upon. Users are strongly recommended to read the rules of the forums which pretty clearly spell out what's acceptable and what's not. Those that are too stupid to read the rules or decided to ignore them find themselves locked out from posting for a random number of hours (mod's discretion).

I read SA regularly, and I feel that they have the best managed forums that i've ever seen but the 100,000+ users makes for one huge community. It's easy to get lost amongst the crowd.

emu, can you explain how the probation system works? I have a somethingawful account, but I know better than to try to get a straight answer out of any of them.

Let's say there's a post by someone asking what this strange lump on their foot is and they have pictures. Let's say I respond to that picture with

KILL IT WITH FIRE

or something equally lame. A mod sees it and then the post is stamped with

(USER WAS PUT ON PROBATION FOR THIS POST)

and then my avatar is changed to a kitten in a jail cell and my title says I can't post for X hours.

I'm not saying we have to do exactly that but probations for stupidity is something I'd like to see.

Well, there are worksafe boards, and if a mod catches childporn and the like it's usually an instant ban.

There are other rules too, but you don't care.

I think, as pointed out by MM, many posters have just become sick of dealing with each new wave of idiots andor posters that think being zany and totally random makes them the shit. After a while it gets old and people just burn out or lose interest. After about 8 or so years, things are bound to change and people will come and go for various reasons. I can`t imagine the status quo remaining the same for that long with all the gradual wear and tear going on. Some new rules on regulating noob idiocy would be nice, but mabye we also need to realize that we can't control all aspects of the forum.

Here is something that might be fun to do.

Let's say gangs are formed. Perhaps 4 of them. You could assign 4 leaders and people could request to join or be invited. You should try to get noobs to join.

Now each gang would have their own means of chat (like you used to do with code).

Then you set up a place in which gangs can make everyone laugh.

Now here is the reason why I think it could make a dent in improving the boards. It promotes team work, you would be able to teach noobs the 9 ways of funny, it promotes competition (who's gang is the funniest.), people who never got along (if accepted into the same gang) might form a bond, you know some real funny things are gonna happen.

True. I heard through the grapevine that even threads mocking furries are passé there these days. OTOH, these days only idiots hate furries.

Although still somewhat wet-behind-the-ears, I'll weigh in and say that I like this idea. Not only could it be a good way of introducing people to the concept of i-mockery humor, it also could teach some skills (cooperation, listening, reasoned debate) that are useful in everyday life.

Businesses are doing this in the workplace; why can't we make it work on a humor web site?

Ok, so a couple of things here...

1) I think some of the older site vets from way back when are bored with the I-Mockery forums because it's a different kind of site in many ways. We used to be almost 100% scene mockery (making fun of whatever music scene you were into), and as a result, this drew in a LOT of complete idiots who didn't get the joke and it was fun as hell to verbally rip them apart in public. As time went on, I got really bored of making scene mockery sites and started expanding into different areas of mockery such as picking apart the stupid things in bad movies, making fun of video games and bad rom hacks, etc etc. While this has obviously generated WAAAAY more traffic for I-Mockery and given us a huge audience, it doesn't make as many complete fools come our way who are ready to get into a knife fight with anybody who says something bad about their scene. You'll be hard pressed to find people who will defend their shit so blindly (even on a humor site) as people who are big into their music and/or religious scenes.

2) I really don't think there's anything wrong with most of the new people who are registering on the site just so they can comment in the articles, weeklies and blog posts. I know the site is called "I-Mockery" 'n all, but there are some people who come here just to let the writers do the mocking and then they comment on it without the intention of getting into a flamewar with some of the other forum members. If there's not enough "mockery" in the comments of the site article threads for you, that's what the forums are for. However, if you feel inclined to "spice things up" in any given article discussion thread, by all means, feel free to do so... just be careful that you're not starting shit for the sake of starting shit and causing a thread to get completely derailed. These are permanent threads that are created for the sole intention of people discussing the article... not your issues with some other poster.

3) I'd be happy to bring back the Mock Wars once 'n a while, but as Chojin already stated, that forum went to shit long ago and I was all too happy to scrap it. Our big site redesign launch has really breathed a lot of new life into I-Mockery over the past few months and you're gonna continue to see some new faces. I have no problem with the forum members mocking each other, that kind of shit is to be expected on this site... just make sure you're not constantly trolling or stalking individual users from thread to thread. That's how discussions end up getting derailed.

4) If you guys have real suggestions for improving the forums, I'm happy to hear 'em. I don't post a lot in here these days because I'm extremely busy, but I still try to keep up with most of what's going on 'round these parts.

I like the gang/team idea as well. It would have to be watched closely of course, or as Chojin said, it could work out in the opposite direction as it was intended. I also like the infractions idea would help, especially within the team idea. Perhaps the team leaders are also part of the group of members who could give infractions so that they could drop infractions on members of their team who are repeatedly acting in a manner unfit for someone on a team.

Personally, I wouldn't mind seeing a sports board added. Some of the best flames and smack I have ever seen come from sports discussion boards. There's something about sports (especially collegate sports) that brings out many peoples inner flaming troll (usually with entertaining results). Not sure how popular a sports board would be here though.

I've never done a sports forum because, I dunno, I-Mockery just doesn't seem like a big sports fan place. If enough people really want a forum to discuss that shit, I guess I could set one up at some point to see how it goes, but since our site draws in a lot of movie/comic/gaming geeks, I'm not sure how many of those people would want to talk about sports. Tell ya what, how about you start up an all-purpose thread called "THE SPORTS THREAD" in general blabber and see how that goes. I forgot to mention that I've also made links to the forum more prominent on the homepage ever since the site redesign, so there are more people coming here. Plus, ALL I-Mockery contests are now exclusive to the forum - you have to have an I-Mockery account to participate.

One interesting thing about the contests I've noticed though: while a lot of people view them, I notice a lot of our forum regulars don't participate in the fun, which is too bad because they're some of the funniest people around here. It's a good way to have some fun on the site and it can also show some of those "newbs" that some of you think are unfunny how to make entries that are funny.

Maybe he can bring some balls this time. >: Anyway, I would also make the equally gay recommendation that members be able to be OFFICALLY BE TRIED FOR FAGGOTRY, with an uninvolved mod as ruling judge and one of many elite members democratically elected by the populace as "not gay" acting as lawyers, both for and against the defense, with a ruling against the defense involving creative, mod-power abusing punishment and a ruling for the defense allowing the board to vote on whether or not the defendant be given official "not gay" status.

Of course, this would involve anyone nominated as a lawyer in the very beginning be tried for faggotry, and allowed to choose their own defense and a court-appointed prosecutor. Anyway, the key point of either of my ideas is that they not be taken seriously in any way and ALL participants be mercilessly mocked in the comments section.

I don't know that we really need to change anything that dramatically. We've always had people coming in and saying that the forums, and the site in general, isn't what it used to be, and we just dismiss them.

The boards have always had a fairly dynamic membership. People come and go; some stick around for longer than others and form bonds with other posters, and then they leave and their friends miss them and start thinking less of the new people that come in, especially short-term posters with no real personality apart from some hilarious ebaum's pic.

And now that we've got more people coming to the boards with the comments system. Some will stay longterm, others will put a few trite remarks out there and leave after a few weeks. In the old days, we used to speed up this process by mocking crappy new people, but now, we have an ignore feature.

I just don't know what else we really need to do, apart from cracking down on crappy posters.

I can't tell.

I've been thinking it would be an awesome idea for a while now, and now's my big chance.

I just like the idea of one of our funnier members being randomly tasked with finding reasons to pick on someone, and an even funnier member being forced to come up with reasons why he shouldn't be punished, especially if the accused is a total gaywad.

Let's just imagine, for example, around the time Zeldasbiggestfan was bitching about being owed money, getting shot with a bb gun and screwed over Sethomas, that ZBF had been brought to trial for faggotry.

He isn't allowed to post in the trial thread. Big point there. In fact, he doesn't post at all, because he is banned for the day that the trial takes place. Sethomas prosecutes and some equally intellectual and/or crazy internet personality is tasked with defending him (For reasons of the accused being a total dink, he is arbitrarily not allowed to choose his defense lawyer), with AChimp presiding over the trial. The defendant is found guilty of being a gaywad, and sentenced to three months of a genuine-looking gay pride avatar, title, and signature with permanent loss of edit button.

I'd probably find everyone guild of Internet faggotry. :/

I think that most of the older posters don't have nearly as much time to post anymore, and so the newer members and random shitheads start to become all that you see, which really turns off the older posters.

Also, I think the Philosophy forum needs an enema. It's stagnated to the point where no one even wants to go there anymore. :(

Hey, Chimpy, go there and start an abortion thread! That will freshen things up!

Not to get a 'boo hoo' or some shit, but I posted one damn comment in the Philosophy/Politics board, one that was detailed, and some jerk (sspadowsky, I believe) joined the thread with one lame-ass comment probably copied from a 13 year-old goth girl's MySpace page.

I believe users like that are why some boards suffer when they could really be much more interesting for older users.
