View Full Version : Recruiting Upright Citizens
Chojin
Mar 18th, 2008, 04:55 PM
THIS IS NOT A CALL TO RECRUIT MODERATORS. READ THIS POST. THANKS. OKAY.
Okay, I've just set up an infrastructure of infractions. Here's how it works.
Administrators, Super Moderators, Moderators, and Upright Citizens can issue infractions. The first three groups can issue infractions of any level, and Upright Citizens can only issue pre-defined infractions.
Pre-defined infractions:
Notification infractions (0 points each, lasts 1 day on member's record):
Notification
Minor infractions (1 point each, lasts 14 days on member's record):
Hounding Other Members
Avatar/Signature Rule Violation
Use of internet memes
Hijacking threads
Bumping old topics
Worthless or excessive topics/replies
Annoying text formatting
Malicious sexist/racist/homophobic/etc. remarks
Major infractions (10 points each, lasts 1 month on member's record):
Spammed Advertisements
Posting Not-Safe-For-Work Material
Flooding/Griefing
After a user has accumulated 10 points, they are automatically banned for 1 day.
After a user has accumulated 20 points, they are automatically banned for 1 week.
After a user has accumulated 30 points, they are automatically banned for 1 month.
Any moderation above that should really be handled by an admin.
You can attach a PM to each infraction to give the person a message with the infraction. You should always do this with the 0 points infraction.
Additionally, all reported posts and infractions are catalogued in a new forum at the bottom of the list visible to members of these groups. This forum is called "Crime Lab". These people can also make posts in this forum if they want.
-------------------------------
So, in this thread, let me know what you think about this system and whether or not you want to be an Upright Citizen. I think general qualifications should be at least 1 year of membership and never having been banned before (unless they can explain why this shouldn't matter).
Also, I have no idea if the board tells everyone if they've been given an infraction for a post. If it does, I'll lower the bannable scores.
In this thread, either volunteer yourself or nominate people who you think should be members of this new group.

Won't some of these rules ruin some of the fun?
Not to mention if some triggerhappy person is given the rights to share these "points" - that'd be a real bitch
Chojin
Mar 18th, 2008, 05:03 PM
Which of these things is fun when it happens?
And that's why we're being SELECTIVE.
Guitar Woman
Mar 18th, 2008, 05:03 PM
I'd assume some sort of screening process would be issued.
Also, Chojin, I'm about 80% sure nobody else can see your infractions.
RaNkeri
Mar 18th, 2008, 05:07 PM
Most of those rules are ok for me, but I'd like to hear more accurate definition for "Worthless or excessive replies".
Especially on the excessive ones, because isn't that what sarcasm consists of?
Or are we going to count single smiley replies as worthless?
Guitar Woman
Mar 18th, 2008, 05:07 PM
I also think we're going in the complete wrong direction for forum improvement. I'm not really sure what the RIGHT direction would be, but this doesn't feel like it.
Just an opinion.
Chojin
Mar 18th, 2008, 05:12 PM
Rankeri, this would be true if this board was being run by robots, but there is discretion involved. That's why we wouldn't want anyone who's been here less than a year.
The overriding concept here is to give the old members a way to kindly keep the new members in line and to reward them for their years of military service.

My favorite thing about this system is that it is going to be WAY easier to ban someone for a day.

Your banning was far and away not my decision alone.

Seems agreeable, as long as the upright citizens in power don't abuse their authority. But I assume you already have a checks and balances system in mind for that.

To be totally serious here - I like the way this is set up chojin, but I don't like the idea of you being the only one picking these people. You're not a total ogre, but you're definitely biased and essentially deputizing a bunch of your little minions isn't the greatest of ideas, seeing as how they all act the same way.
Get a balance. I don't care if I'm not able to give people dreaded infractions, but I don't like the idea of someone like gw being able to do it when people like mattjack and myself can't because it's pretty obvious we'll be targets of your nintenrage.

Well, we've got a few volunteers already. I'll weigh in on the list so far:
Emu: Yeah, you seem pretty even handed. You could do it.
GW: You're too controversial a choice. Plus, you aren't even allowed to edit your own posts.
GDD: Sure, you've been here a while as Sniperwulf. You could work.
Sam: Maybe, as long as you don't create any more wacky characters.
Liquid: You can be in charge of the loli bukkake board when we get one.

I read you loud and clear there, man, but I think the staff would have the common sense to deny power to these "certain" people, knowing that it would probably cause a lot of good posters to leave.
MattJack

Honestly, how many good posters are on here? Whether you love them or hate them, there aren't THAT many. You have the regular 25-30 people that post all the time, and then the people who just come and go.

Really, before other higher ups decide on my FATE, I'd like to say this.
I love this forum a whole big huggy bunch, and I want to see it continue to be as fun as it always has. I'd love doing anything I can to help that. Despite Zomboid's worries of giving infractions for hating the wii or other retarded stuff, I can assure you I'm a little more mature than that. I really have no idea where he's coming from.
I'm not going to pretend that I don't think Zomboid has his head up his ass to an award-winning degree, because I do. He seems to think he is the target of malicious moderation, when really, he is an excessive douchebag and deserves most of the flak he gets. But this certainly wouldn't influence my opinion. If I got picked for this, I'd probably ignore Zomboid altogether to avoid him whining to everyone about how it's only because he doesn't like the Wii and that I want to perform fellatio on Luigi and other nasty things. Other people can take care of telling him to shut up, and mabye then he'll try and change his attitude.

Will there be a grandfather clause for past infractions? I can't be sure I was a prefect angel on all my past posts so if one were so inclined, would they be able to retroactively "red card" me or anyone else?
Chojin
Mar 18th, 2008, 06:10 PM
All infractions get registered in the OFFICIAL I-MOCKERY CRIME LAB with a link to the thread and post, so it's pretty obvious if someone goes back a year or so to GET YOU GOOD.
And if they did, they'd get their infraction button taken away.

For one thing, people like me won't be able to start shit with new people for no reason other than me being bored, and then more people might stay. Like Kitsa is just barley posting in General Blabber and I think we are lucky she didn't run away because of me. But yeah, I won't be able to stalk girls like I used too :(

Chojin
Mar 18th, 2008, 06:24 PM
Okay, through some testing, an update:
After someone gets an infraction for a post, there is a RED CARD down near the edit and quote buttons:
http://i-mockery.com/forum/images/mockery/buttons/redcard.gif
So someone can't get multiple infractions for the same thing.
As a consequence, I'm going to lower the total # of points required for bannings. Those of you with the buttons, just keep an eye out in case someone's already gotten a card for excessive posting (since in this case they'd be able to get an infraction for each one).
MattJack
Mar 18th, 2008, 06:25 PM

You can't complete the Infraction Transaction™ without sending a PM. Believe me I've tried.
I've only given out three infractions and all of them were retaliated with a hefty amount of sass, so I expect a lot of new people will do this. What should we do if that happens?

to the best of my knowledge, liquid hasn't done anything else. if another mod has a problem with him, I'll take him off.
Again this is not for the position of board mayor, it is a button that lets you warn people.

MetalMilitia
Mar 18th, 2008, 07:02 PM
Okay here are the people I think should be mod in some capacity:
Emu - He has a good sense of humour and I think would do a great job. I always wondered why he never got the position the last time you did one of these threads.
Willie - Being the OFFICIALLY best liked poster on the board has got to be worth something, and if that wasn't reason enough; he hates jerks. Which is something I'm sure we can all appreciate.
Here are the people I don't think should be mod in any capacity, under any circumstances:
GW - I know she thinks she could do a good job but I doubt she's mature enough to handle the POWER of moderator functions. She'd end up doing all kinds of not-funny stuff to try and cement her position as being accepted into the community and it'd just suck.
Liquidstatik - He's no where near as funny as he thinks he is and is quite probably some kind of paedophile in the making. As per Guitar Woman, I don't think he's responsible enough to have any kind of power over other user's posts.
MetalMilitia

Mar 18th, 2008, 07:09 PM
Yeah, this isn't modship, this is more like the assistant manager position at Wendy's. I don't really have that much power but god damn my balls are hanging low right now.
I mean yes my actions could result in a temp ban, but I'd have to yellowcard someone a whole bunch to result in even a minor ban, and naturally I'm going to get kicked off if I go around yellowcarding every post some idiot makes because I don't like him.

To stop some of the controversy would it be worth adding all the "upright citizens" chosen by the mods to a poll where everyone would be able to vote against them (kind of like pop idol :eek). That way it'd be obvious which choices are really unpopular.

. . .completely fucking stupid, and that it might cause people to watch what they post due to having some dumb fuck simply not liking them. Shit, they might just stop posting entirely due to excessive amounts of cuntery from the i-mockery senior club, not the posters.

Here's the deal, people:
These positions have no real power to speak of. And if you're concerned about the quality of your post earning you an infraction, or a ban, or whatever, you can feel free to ask me, or Mock, or anyone else to review your case. If things get to the point where infractions are getting handed out for trifling shit, we'll toss this whole system.

Last time I'm going to repeat this. If another mod has a problem with my decisions, people won't get in. If I have a problem with some of the nominations, other mods can still get them in.
This is no different from a straight-up vote, aside from the fact that some people get the ability to warn people quicker.
Fair enough.

I disagree. You just yelled at a new guy the other day for no real reason other than what I perceived as an attempt to fit in. You'll have to excuse me if that's not the reason, but I assumed it is, seeing as how I have no idea who you are and I don't think I'm the only one.
When did you piss me off? When that new guy thing happened? You didn't piss me off so much as make me want to defend the new guy and tell you to fuck off.

I think I should be one. I have clamored for a warning system or some kind of group agreeded banning of people whenever these "How can we make the board better" threads would come up.
My only infractions were that this account was banned sometime after I switched to a different name. I think it got caught in some crossfire over the madlibs thread getting locked. It got unbanned shortly after when I got sick of my other screename. That and I am friends with forum criminal Jixby Phillips, but then again so is Willie and Willie is the nicest guy in the world.
I've done a good job ignoring Guitar Woman and made a beautiful case on why Zeldasbiggestfan was the worst person in America. (http://www.i-mockery.com/forum/showthread.php?p=502740&highlight=zeldasbiggestfan#post502740)
I would just really like a warning system. It should end alot of complaining on these forums and unfunny shouting matches. It should be a bannable (or at least revokeable of privileges) for people to instigate gang red carding of an member, if the infraction is clear then other people will call it out too without any instigation.
also I think starting a thread with just an emoticon needs to stop. Specifically :oneofthosedays since it's technically an internet meme.

I hate Guitar Woman more than anybody here (except maybe Zomboid but I don't keep up with the board drama) but I think him having a warning system at least for a tryout period wouldn't be so bad. Its like when your mom let's you walk the neighbor's dog for awhile before she agrees to let you have your own dog. If Guitar Woman can warn people without an agenda and do it without trying to sniff the neighborhood dog's butt then so be it.

Basically, Chicago Drew got a warning for posting spoilers and then he starting sending PMs to SAM ordering him what do to do. Then he started bumping old thread and I gave him an actual infraction. Once again he became all Bam Magera on me "ILL POST WHERE I WANT" and that's when Willie took it into his own hands.
He's an angry little man who will do whatever he wants or at least complain to whoever he wants. He may of went overboard, but that guy needed to cool off. Maybe instead of complaining to the moderators he should of took our advice and shutup.

I'm just sitting here on the sidelines wondering why this was all necessary. All you needed to do was to read the rules and regs (usually stickied to the top) before posting, and abide by them. Key word there. It's not like we're being asked to read "War and Peace", is it?
Oh snap, this post belongs in the "Books" forum now ....:)

That Chicago guy said "Legitimately responding to a thread that hasn't been locked, deleted, closed, sauteed or fried is suddenly AGAINST NORMAL FORUM RULES?!"
Yes, in this forum, it IS a rule, as a matter of fact. Just the fact that he was so vocal about being indignant, and wouldn't respect any form of authority is enough to get him banned for a day to cool off. I don't see why this caused a problem. Maybe instead of just nixing it, we could have just said "okay, no more than one point a day for the same reason". That would have fixed this, I think.

Sad, but it would have been a useful tool for people to learn when they have done something wrong and *gasp* learn from it. Instead, people's feelings got hurt and they cried till they got their way.
I blame little league, once they started giving everyone trophies all of society started to crumble. Now everyone thinks they can do no wrong, and when they get corrected, they don't know how to deal :(
