why there is no topic about this? >:

anyway some facts about the game

- The game is set in 2008, In Liberty City.

- A big part of the game is delivering story in new ways and allowing the player to plot their own destiny

- The map is smaller than San Andreas, But a lot more detailed.

- The Statue of Liberty is called The Statue of Happiness.

- Rockstar have been working very hard on the targeting system - expect it to be a big improvement from previous games.

- There will be NO planes. Rockstar have said they want the game to be realistic.

- You will use your cell phone to call contacts.

- DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) is 'BOABO (Beneath the Offramp of the Algonquin Bridge)'.

- GTA IV contains 4 parts of New York (Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, The Bronx) and a part of New Jersey. Which have been renamed in the game to 'Broker', 'Algonquin', 'Dukes', 'Bohan' and 'Alderney'.

- Realism has been upgraded, in terms of Pedestrians not walking around like mindless zombies.

- No loading screens... this is due to a longer loading time at the start of the game.

- Multiplayer won't be MMO style, but will fit better to the single player experience

- Bellic arrives in Liberty City as he has been receiving emails from his cousin, Roman. At the start of the game, he is the only person you know.

- Pedestrians are a lot more realistic, and do things such as smoke, sit on benches, read, go shopping, eat, and more...

- While making the game, Rockstar consulted crime experts and ex-policemen and found that being a criminal is much more difficult now than it was during previous decades, so they have tried to reflect this in the game. Expect to see people getting arrested as the police are a heavy presence.

- As Rockstar North are approaching the recruitment of voice actors in a different way. We probably won't hear any recognisable voices in GTA 4 because they are looking for voices that suit the attitude of the characters - This approach is also being carried over to the soundtrack, where R* are looking for music which works well with the modern day Liberty City.

- The visual effects of the game will be massively enhanced - the rising and setting sun will reflect off glass and light up details on buildings; the streets will have potholes and rubble.

- Variations in terrain are reflected in the way people walk over it.

- Various Gaming Sites have played the Xbox 360 version and the PS3 Version, and say the graphics are not representative of the final version. The final version will look better than the screenshots suggest.

- The protagonist Niko Bellic is in his mid-thirties, and although not customisable, you will be able to don him with new outfits and such. Rockstar said they got Niko's physics just right and found it was difficult to implement character customisation with regards to this.

- Staten Island, the only area of New York not recreated in Liberty City was left out due to Rockstar deciding it would not be a fun location to play in.

- There are no "dead spots" or "irrelevant space" in the game.

- The mob will be featured in the game, though they won't be lead characters.

- 'hardly any' of the characters from previous games will return.

- Missions will offer an increased amount of realism, and will be longer and more varied, some will even have multiple possible outcomes.

- Bridges will keep you from accessing other boroughs at the start of the game.

- What comes as a big relief to us is that there's no more pop-ups of buildings and foliage as we've seen in the past thanks to the completely overhauled graphics engine.

- Dan Houser stated that no one has attempted to recreate a location of this size, and with so much detail, ever before.

- The Artificial Intelligence of the NPC's has received a huge overhaul, pedestrians do a wide variety of things which were mentioned in the GameInformer article, and they even react to events such as a gun being pulled on them.

- Shooting is said to be much more precise and fluid than in previous games.

- Niko can use his mobile phone to do things such as set up deals and ambushes

- Rockstar haven't yet decided how to make use of Sony's SIXAXIS controller for the PlayStation 3 version of the game.

- Planes were not included in the game because there isn't enough room for them, and you would traverse the city too quickly. As we confirmed before though, we will be able to pilot helicopters.

- Rockstar have promised a wider range of side-missions to partake in while not playing through the main storyline.

All right then.

Who else is pissed that they have to wait till it comes out for PC? Because I for one, am not gonna buy a PS3 or Xbox 360, ever.

Chojin

To be honest my CD-i's gotten a lot more play than my 360 thus far. As for the game, it sounds like a handful of token upgrades to an established franchise, an allegory to two-thirds of this console generation.

My frustration with the game industry from both working in it and from the consumer side is embodied in games like this. I'm sure it will be very polished, have all the qualities modern consumers require of a "good game", and sell so well that the suits running these organizations further convince themselves that they should do nothing but release sequels, but to say that I'm bored of this shit from the industry would be the understatement of the century.

ASIDE: This is also probably why I haven't revisited Mario Galaxy after meeting the minimum requirements to beat it, done the same with Halo 3 despite being a huge Bungie fag, and can't stand Zelda games. And I'll leave this thread alone now so the rest of you can enjoy it.

I sure as hell hope they do release it on the PC. Sure, GTA IV will just be more of the same, albeit even further polished, but when it comes to this series, I don't care. The GTA games have always appealed to me, and while it would be nice to see more innovation in the industry, I still think it'll be a fun game, and isn't that all that matters?

Also, one new thing I love is the handy radio, so you can now listen to music while walking around. I just hope they don't make it too realistic when it comes to the sound quality, because I hate poor sound quality in music.

And I do hope they've improved the firefights somewhat, because the ones in SA were, while better than those in previous games, still not that great.

And I hope it's got better music than SA did...I hate rap, which kind of sucked for me.:\

Well, I guess you got lucky, because they did. Well, I think you can still eat, but don't need too, and I don't know if you can get a girlfriend.

But it never really bothered me too much. I ate occasionaly to regain health (or if I wanted a fat character) anyway, so that was never a problem, and I always ignored my girlfriends. The exercising was a bit of a pain in the ass, so I'm glad they dropped that as well.

GamePro
Their Score: 5/5
Notes: Before reading this, I thought Rockstar to be but men. Now I see they are Gods.
Moment of Climax: "GTA IV isn't just a game. It's a testament to the immense talent and take-no-prisoners mentality that has made Rockstar the company that it is today."
My Score: 4/5. A 1.5 page-long love letter to Rockstar is the highlight. The fact all game faults are condensed to half a paragraph on the fifth page also contributes to a great score.

Game Informer
Their Score: 10/10
Notes: Probably the best of the lot. And by "best" I mean MOST EXCITED.
Moment of Climax: "Grand Theft Auto IV doesn't just raise the bar for the storied franchise; it completely changes the landscape of gaming. Once you play it, you won't look at video games the same way again."
My Score: 5/5. No, 6/5. It opens with "I now know how film critics felt after screening The Godfather". A perfect storm of hype, excitement and pants-wetting. Best review of the lot. No, best review ever.

I know I said I'd stay out but I felt you all needed to enjoy those reviews as much as I did.

Also, I am trying very very hard to resist getting GTA - even though I know I'll never play it - in spite of my gamer paranoia that tells me people are having a great time and that I'm not in on it.

So, I would expect for me to have it within the week.

MattJack

It's a fun game yall. I wouldn't say it's all, "HOLY SH*T THIS IS AMAZING!! BUY THIS AND QUIT YER DAY JOB!" because it looks and smells like the previous couple of GTAs.

The multiplayer is more/less just chaos, but I think that will change after more people start to play online and get a feel for the game.

I have only invested about an hour into the actual game (i've spent about 6 hours on xbox live). So I don't really have any valid opinions on it yet, but if you thought the other GTAs were alright and nothing amazing then chances are you will feel the same way about this one.

The new aiming system isn't anything revolutionary.

The Gears of War style Duck n Cover system isn't, well, Gears of War to say the least.

The police are basically the same.

The graphics aren't going to amaze you.

I mean the mechanics of the gameplay are still the same with minor upgrades in my opinion.

With all this said, I <3 this game and the GTA series. I'm sure the storyline is gonna give me a helluva hard on.

GTA IV, Halo 3, Gears of War Series, Ninja Gaiden 2, and Call Of Duty 4 are going to be xbox 360 classics in a few years, so just buy them.

Fathom Zero
Apr 30th, 2008, 09:37 PM
GTA IV is exactly like Halo 3. Not as many revolutions as you'd expect, but there are a few new features and all of them polished to a diamond-like sheen. The multiplayer is chaos, but that's mainly Party Mode / Freeroam, deathmatch and Cops and Crooks are more structured. Nobody has explored all of Liberty City yet, so there's still quite a few things left yet to see.

How're the copter contols, I never got to fly one.

I've heard a lot of mixed reviews. Some of my friends say it's great, others say it's perfect, still others just sit there listing all the bugs and glitches they've encountered in the first few days of having it. I dunno if I want to buy it.

WhiteRat
Apr 30th, 2008, 10:50 PM
Bugs and glitches in a GTA game are nothing new. Personally, I find the unintentional imperfections in the previous games to be fun as hell. It has to be the first game/series that I can think of where the glitches are actually a good thing.

As far as GTA 4, I haven't seen any glitches, much less ones so major that your friends' remarks may warrant you not purchasing the game. To each his own, I guess.

That's not quite true. I've played GTA San Andreas through twice, and halfway at least 5 times. And that's saying something, because I have a horrible attention span, and it's actually pretty rare that I finish a game.
Okay, Vice City has somewhat less replayability, and I don't even like GTA III, and haven't played any clones, but GTA: SA (which for me, is the best of all GTA games by far) has tons of replayability, even if it is just driving around causing havoc.

One thing I found weird when comparing the 360 and PS3 versions, you can watch TV from 3 views in the PS3 version but only 2 in the 360 version.

it has no poping heads, but in the end is more viceral and gruesome you can shoot people in the knees and watch them crawl triying to escape. sometimes even when you think they are dead some stil are alive and move their eyes(waiting for the killing blow).

since the graphics are more realistic it looks more violent.

You know that scene in Twins where Arnold tilts the car on it's side and drives like that for a few seconds? I just did that with this chick, with her car, while on a date and she was like GEEZ LOUISE!!! and the game told me that if I wreck her car, the date will be over. So we went bowling and on the way back to her car, I pushed over and killed a cop, which ended the date :(

Few days, it seems, as the repair center is only about an hour away in Texas. Maybe they'll include a mic. I can hope.

They also offered to repair any games the error may have scratched.

The bullshit about the whole thing is that, if I had taken the thing apart, it could've been fixed in minutes. But my family wants to milk every last second of that warranty. Not that I can really blame them, but, you know. I like to show off my technical chops.

Dr. Boogie
May 7th, 2008, 05:42 PM
I never really liked having to drive after people because their cars travel along a set path and typically get speed/handling bonuses when needed, but they seem to be taking it easy with those in this game. Plus, it seems like a lot of those chase missions eventually end with the target stopping/wrecking and attacking on foot.

Roggs
May 8th, 2008, 01:10 AM
IV had too many of those chases going on. The set paths are one thing, but what pissed me off was that a lot of the time the enemies we invulnerable until a certain point or they crashed.

A question for other people who have finished the single player mode:

What about Mr. Bulgarin? I thought he would be the big guy you'd have to kill at the end, who gives a shit about Jimmy Pegorino? Bulgarin just disappears after the last diamond mission. Is Rockstar planning to release some sort of downloadable content where you can finish off Bulgarin? This game feels incomplete without him eating a bullet.

So far my favorite things about the game are watching TV and hitting pedestrians with my car. They really nailed the ragdoll physics :o

The level of immersion in the game really is impressive. I especially appreciate how you can just enter and exit shops without any loading time.

The city also feels impressively alive.

The police seem more capable than before when you're without the means to leave the CRIME ZONE, but are really easy to escape. However, I'm not sure I'd want it any other way. Also, cops seem to be EVERYWHERE.

It would be really nice if more shit would show up on your map, especially hot dog stands and the like. Why they don't - when they're pretty important places - is a mystery to me.

I went to a strip club with my cousin, and a dancer approached me for a PRIVATE SESSION, but when i pressed LB, my cousin got up to leave, and the dancer led me into a room and then just stood there staring blankly at me. I also can't seem to figure out how to use a cab legally after hailing it.

The acting and the animation really are top-notch. The story's excellent, too. While the game in general is cliche and maybe not as innovative, I think it belongs right up there with the best games on metacritic. I also, really, really wish someone would put together a game with this much depth on the Wii, where aiming would be a little less stupid.

darkvare

The cops get called in by pedestrians who witness your crimes. Sometimes you'll hear a "OH MAI GAW!! SEND THE POLICE TO SOUTH BOHAN!!" and then they show up right after that.

To get into a cab that you hail, go over to the back of it and there should be a prompt that says to hold Y to get in the back. If it doesn't show up or if you tap Y, you'll jack the cab.

So I've apparently reached one of those iconic GTA missions that's way too fucking difficult for its own good and has plenty of shitty cutscenes for you to skip every time you repeat it. I'm on 'Three Leaf Clover' - the bank hit - and something fucking stupid happens every time I try to complete it. This last time, we got out of the subway and I had to get a 4 door vehicle. This would be fine, but one of the two NPCs I have to carry through the mission is busy being stuck on a fucking fence and powerwalking in place. After blasting a bunch of cops, the man CAN NOT BE BUDGED and I eventually get shot to death again.

This happens to me in pretty much every GTA game. God damn it.

That's just what I heard.

Nah I'm sure they will port it eventually. Doesn't really make business sense not to unless Microsoft and Sony pay them a boat load of cash for exclusivity.

The cost of porting to PC would be neglegable compared to the profit they would be able to squeeze out of the PC market. Even if they only sell a third of the number of titles in total as were sold in the first day of console sales they'll still be bagging a hundred million dollars, which was about as much as it cost to make the game from scratch.

I found Eddie Low, the serial killer. I was expecting some twenty-something guy in a hoodie, but instead it was just some pedo that was abused by his dad D=

not sayin this game isnt good(although i cant get into it yet) I cannot see how the fuck this game could score a perfect score in most reviews. the graphics are shit(esp after playing burnout, grid, ace combat, ninja gaiden 2, dmc 4, or pretty much every other recent game) and i dont like the driving. not to mention the bad framerate and shit randomly appearing in front of you. This game is totally overated.

That said i havent played through any of the story yet, maybe that will improve my inital impressions. I do love the rag doll physics so far though.

After understanding driving more, I run fuckin' circles around dudes. I ROCK.

You only get better as you drive more and more.

Im with you whoreable. There is no way GTA4 is as good as the reviews are. Wanna know the best thing about GTA4...... GS gave me $38 on my trade in for it lol. Worst GTA game in a long time. Save your money and buy VC or SA, they were the best GTA games, or even for Saints Row 2 whenever the hell that comes out.

Anyone want to buy my copy? I'll sign it. I'm also selling the limited edition faceplate only available in giveaways that midnight at Gamecrazy. The faceplate's still in the box.

Does anyone know what the name of that song is in the commercial, I swear it sounds Eno'ish.

Get Innocuous! by LCD Soundsystem.

Unless you meant some other commercial, that's the only one I've seen.

James Murphy is one of the few musicians after Brian Eno (http://www.scaruffi.com/vol3/eno.html) who can make the masses both dance and rock. This album does so over such a broad range of repertory formats that eventually represents a fresco of musical graffiti. The propulsive Get Innocuous is the most derivatives of the British 1980s.

There's a tracklist in the back of the instruction book and they said they're not releasing the whole soundtrack.

You can use the music on your 360's hard drive.

I just got GTA IV last night. The online matches are pretty fucking sweet, and overall, the game is a lot better than I had expected. My gamertag's Old Lightning.

Thank you. I didn't realize they had the option of listening to your own music like in the xbox version. Can't wait to kill some people while listening to Blue Man Group

How do you hate all the music? I feel there is a pretty big variety and anyone who hates jazz music doesn't like quality music.

I always liked K-rose off of San Andreas. The music on IV just isn't having alot of fun if you ask me, too much of that serious crap, only thing I'll give it is that it intoduced me to The Sex Pistols without me even knowing! Note: I've only played San Andreas and IV. :(
