HUGE EDIT: Scanned the forum and didn't notice the previous 2008 NFL thread until after I posted this. Feel free to delete I guess.

Training camp is only a month away so now is the time to switch gears from basketball and cricket to the upcoming NFL season. What are your expectations for your respective team? Which rookie(s) do you feel will have an immediate impact? Will Terrell Owens dance the Charleston atop a flagpole in Sheboygan, WI? What are the odds that Dennis Green enters and wins the annual Coney Island hot dog eating contest?

The bold and beautiful Vikings prediction - 11-5 with the NFC North crown and falling to the Cowboys in the NFC Championship game.

Super Bowl Champion - Dallas Cowboys

Offensive Rookie of the Year:
Darren McFadden - Raiders (provided he gets adequate carries in a crowded backfield)

Defensive Rookie of the Year:
Keith Rivers - Bengals

Forgotten Coach of the Year: Wayne Fontes

My prediction? Considering how ridiculously easy the schedule will be for the pats in the upcoming season, the hatred and the incessent complaining toward the team will go from national to global. I think they will go 13-3 with the major adjustments on the defensive side with a lot of new and young players. I don't want to predict the postseason just yet.

And uuhh, I don't care about other teams.

I don't see a 2008 NFL thread other than this one. There is a 2008 NFL draft thread, but that is different. So I say keep this thread as is.

The Vikings "lost" to the Seahawks 34-17 tonight due to five fumbles and a lackluster Vikes D. Tarvaris Jackson played solid completing 8 out of 11 passes with some nice throws to Thomas Tapeh and Bernard Berrian. But dear god, apparently Brad Childress doesn't teach a little something called ball control.

I thought Cleveland looked solid despite their preseason loss to the Jets. Anderson played quite well for the 2 or 3 series he played in throwing a touchdown and throwing no interceptions. Brady Quinn also did well throwing a touchdown and an interception. The recieving core looks polished for so early, though the 3rd and 4th string defense all but collapsed allowing the Jets to get the victory (not that that matters, I saw exactly what I wanted to see in the first half).

I can't wait to see what Cleveland does this year, I think they could make some serious noise this season.

EDIT: Because I didn't do it before when WhiteRat did his prediction, I will give my prediction for Cleveland's record. 12-4

Eagles 3rd stringers lose a meaningless game to the Steelers, but McNabb played well for 1+ quarters and DeShaun Jackson caught 4 balls for 45 years. All in all a pretty good start to pre-season.

Eagles have always been enigmatic - never as bad as they look when they lose and never as good as they look when they win. And they usually do a lot of both. My prediction is 10-6 and maybe a wild-card berth.

I'm gonna go with San Diego for the Super Bowl. I know a lot of folks don't rly give em much thought, but they have the tools to make it imo.

I don't see Dallas making it past the second round in the playoffs. I think Romo is slightly over rated (he's still good tho)imo, and I just don't see them doing it.

All this doesn't rly matter though cause we know dem Saints from da boot are gonna do it :p

Brett said today that his arm is "Fatigued" but not sore and wants to change his throwing schedule this camp. So, which week does Favre get injured and break his consecutive start streak? I say Week 7.

Colonel Flagg

Brett said today that his arm is "Fatigued" but not sore and wants to change his throwing schedule this camp.

And he's also "well-seasoned" and "experienced" not "old".

I think earlier, say week 4.

Madden Curse hits week 11. The Jets o-line is good, but he's gonna frustrated at having no receivers and try to scramble out of the pocket or hold on too long for the o-line to protect him. Thats the week they play the Pats in New England.

By the way, Matt, week 5 is their bye week.

But, looking at the Jets schedule, it ain't half bad. All those sissy Western Division teams. They won't make the playoffs, but they'll be a factor until Favre's injury.

Alarm klaxons are blaring as Vikings QB Tarvaris Jackson injured his knee while scrambling against the Ravens tonight. Contrary to popular belief, I think this is a huge blow to the team if it ends up being a serious injury. Jackson had a very good camp and looked very sharp in his two appearances this exhibition season.

I do not want to see Gus Ferotte leading us to an 8-8 record.

Pentegarn
Aug 17th, 2008, 01:25 AM
I think the Vikings have a better season than 8-8 to look forward to. More likely it will be 10-6, or if it goes really bad for them, 9-7.

WhiteRat
Aug 17th, 2008, 01:45 AM
With Ferotte I think we 8-8, but it appears that Jackson only suffered a bruised knee which he should quickly recover from. Sticking with my previous prediction the Vikings should at least 11-5 and reach the NFC Championship game.

hester has to stop trying to take it out of the endzone. he almost got a safety in the pre-season and he doesn't really have the grip of a c-clamp which makes the chances of him fumbling on the one yard line too possible. Plus everyone in that stadium knew when he didn't take a knee that he was gonna try to pull some thing like that.

One of my favorite Richie the K stories goes something like this:

Rainy afternoon, miserable conditions, game coming down to the wire and the Eagles were down by 10. They scored a touchdown, and, inexplicably, Rich decides to "go for 2". THey blow it, and wind up getting the ball back, with no time-outs (naturally) only to drive down to within field goal range as time expires.

When asked about the decision after the game he stated "My laminated sheet got wet and I misread whether I should go for 1 or 2 in that situation."

Even now, after all these years, that still gives me an upset stomach.

I'll admit, the Saints got a raw deal with non-call face mask on the Bush fumble but Gramattica miffed a kick to go ahead at the end, so I don't have a whole lot of sympathy. Once again though Reggie Bush proves all the nay-sayers wrong by easily returning 2 punts for touchdowns. He may not be an every down back but he is the most electrifying player in the league.

The whistle blow in the Broncs/Chargers game, the facemask no-call in the Vikes/Saints game, the roughing the passer in the Titans/Ravens game, the pass interference call in the Lions/Vikes game yesterday, and a number of other calls/non-calls have affected the outcome of games. I can't believe I missed this one. After Romo is walking around with a mammoth bandage around his pinkie, the reporters for ESPN were milling around the Cowboy locker room, looking for comments from players. They got a doozy from T.O.:

Receiver Terrell Owens (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=1056) refused comment, getting agitated when he saw cameras recording him.
"Today is not Wednesday," he said, referring to the day he routinely talks to reporters.

I see a major tantrum on the horizon.

Owner Jerry Jones admitted after the game that he thought the Cowboys had enough to beat the Rams despite Romo's injury and the suspension of cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones. I could rail about the missed calls and the blown on-field replay reversal, but let's face it - they got flat-out beat. I know the ownership has a love affair with coach Reid, but really, has the game passed him by? The Giants beat them, not in the air, but by

They would have been 7-2 hadn't gaffney dropped the easy pass for a touchdown in the last minutes against the colts couple of weeks ago.

McClain
Nov 11th, 2008, 11:48 AM
The same could be said for a myriad of teams that won/lost by a small margin.

The entire Indy season could be a loss, but as long as we beat the Pats I consider the season a success. It's Belichick and the loudmouth "Bastan" fans, man. I like Brady and wished he was there so we wouldn't have to hear all the "yeah, you beat the Pats w/out Brady" arguments. And people were ready to recycle that argument for the Steelers, but it looks like we prevailed regardless.

NE is a good sports town lately. If one major team fails, at least you have contenders in the remaining sports. No major league teams for Hoosiers. Cubs 'cause they're the closest. Not much to say about the Pacers lately. GO COLTS.

Feel free to hold me this statement, but I have a feeling that the Vikings are firing things up at the right time much like the Giants last year. I hope that is the case because if the Vikings ever won the conference crown I would take a shit on a plate and post a pic of it here.

I know the Giants won and all, but I still want to complain about the refs.

They flag Corey Webster for illegal contact and nullify his interception, the next play the 'skins score a touchdown. Apparently, it is illegal for a CB to touch the ball, because didn't lay a finger on the wideout.

Then, Deangelo Hall puches off hixon's head and pulls in Eli's pass and there isn't a peep from the refs.

I think officiating this year so far has been piss poor.

I stand by this statement. Late (and looked to be helmet-to-helmet) hit on Frerotte goes uncalled. The flag on Webster was just mystifying. Doesn't matter if the team is winning or wins, the refs should get the calls right.

I saw the exact same call against Joselio Hanson on (I think) Larry Fitzgerald in the AZ/PHI game. It should have been 4th and goal, instead it was 1st and goal from the 1. Bad refs are a plague on the league.

Hey, I just agreed with El Blanco - the world just stopped rotating. :p

I think they all decided to suck ass after Eddie Guns blew that call in the Broncos Chargers game earlier this season so he wouldn't look like a total asshole.

Or their collective gambling debts have gotten out of control and they need to secure some wins.

I know this has been touched on lightly but today a federal judge blocked the suspensions of 5 players that tested positive for a banned diuretic:

This is huge for the Vikings has Pro Bowl DLs Kevin and Pat Williams would be greatly missed had they been suspended.

They almost beat the Vikings today. I knew coming into this game that the Vikes would not blow them out. If there is any team this year that the Lions would beat it was the Vikings. With Frerotte out, my boy Tarvaris Jackson tore it up and led the Vikings on two impressive scoring drives to beat the Lions 20-16. What makes this win even better is that douche bag Daunte Culpepper couldn't extract his little revenge by beating his former team.

Anyone else see the terrible cheap shot that Cherillious made on Jared Allen? Dude needs to get suspended for the rest of the season for that shit.

Even after a rash of really bad games, the Beag's are still in the playoff hunt. My take is that if they win-out they're in. Hotlanta will lose one more game, and Washington and Dallas are both on the schedule. They have to win out, though.

Hey, guess what guys; we don't have to pass the football all the time! There's something called a "running game" that everyone is talking about - why don't we try that this week against the Giants?

Sped.

They did; Terrell Owens. :lol

My beef has never been with McNabb - he's probably one of the best QB's ever to wear an Eagles uniform (though that's not saying much coming from the land of Pete Liske, Mike Boryla, Rick Arrington, John "don't call me John-boy" Walton, and that lovely three headed monster of Jim McMahon, Pat Ryan and Jeff Kemp).

IMO, Reid has been the problem with the franchise of late by neglecting see tne need for a balanced (60/40 to 40/60) attack. Consider this: In the Bengals-Eagles game the Eagles had 18 third down opportunities. To convert these third downs to first downs they chose to pass the ball .... 18 times. Including several 3rd-and-less-than-4-yards chances. For the love of God, why couldn't they try to run the ball just once? :hypno

And they went to a Super Bowl. Yeah, Reid isn't as good as his coaching resume would suggest, but Donovan has gotten a raw deal. My buddy and I compared the way fans in Philly treat him to the way fans here in Tejas treat Tracy McGrady. They're not the problem, but the fans wanna see 'em gone. I don't get it; maybe I'm too rational.

Colonel Flagg
Dec 9th, 2008, 01:03 PM
Randall got a raw deal IMO. He was a great athlete who really didn't understand the QB position to his fullest ability. If he had a coach who gave a shit about offense, he would have been brought along more slowly, allowed the chance to learn the nuances of reading defenses and probably had a far more successful career in playoff games. As it played out, he got James David Ryan.

Them's the breaks :\

I don't disagree. It's been apparent for some time to any fan that really pays attention that he is the heart and soul of the Eagles franchise.

It's funny, but every single bleedin' time they decide (for whatever reason) to develop a running game during any game, it seems they do much better passing the ball. McNabb has enjoyed this balance as well - his numbers the past two weeks have been far more than respectable, and an incredible difference over the Baltimore debacle and that stupid tie. The point is that he doesn't have to do it all himself, and that the defenses can't just sit back and play 3-deep all day long.

It's obvious to a hack like me. Why can't Reid see this? >:

wide receiver Terrell Owens (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=1056) has expressed resentment toward Tony Romo (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=5209), apparently jealous of the quarterback's relationship with tight end Jason Witten (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=4527). Owens thinks Romo and Witten -- close friends and road roommates who came to Dallas in the same offseason -- hold private meetings and create plays without including Owens, according to a source who speaks regularly with Owens' teammates.

Fuck the NFL referees. They've been atrocious all season and didn't disappoint this weekend, either. A great and meaningful game between the Steelers and Ravens was marred thanks to the replay official's douchebaggery. Steelers might've scored on 4th down, kicked a field goal, or gotten stopped... we'll never know.

Seriously, make the refs full-time and make them more accountable than a fucking league apology.

Yeah, there does seem to be an uncanny string of horrible officiating this year. A few calls come to mind.
I find it hard to believe that a billion dollar company like the NFL can't have their referee's as full-time employees. Granted they don't have to work as often as NBA or MLB officiates, but still... Toss 'em six figures and keep 'em busy training/watching video for four days a week. It's getting bad.

Baltimore needs to beat a team with a winning record. Otherwise, San Diego can sneak in there.

And Indy has a spot, I think.

pac-man
Dec 17th, 2008, 05:21 PM
How would Baltimore effect San Diego? San Diego isn't in the hunt for the wild card, they're playing for the AFC West. They've got a better conference record than Denver, so if they win out and Denver loses out they'll take it with an 8-8 record.

The wild card chasers are Baltimore, Miami, New England, and Indy. And yeah, the Colts are actually the top wild card right now.

El Blanco
Dec 17th, 2008, 07:05 PM
No, San Diego is still in it. Outside shot, but the way Baltimore does in "must win" games, the Charges may have a better shot.

Granted, it will most likely be Indy and the Pats or Jets.

pac-man
Dec 17th, 2008, 07:39 PM
How is San Diego still in the wild card race? The best they can finish is 8-8, the worst Baltimore, Miami, New England, or the Jets can finish is 9-7. And all those teams except the Pats have a better AFC record than the Chargers. Trust me, the only way San Diego makes the playoffs is as the AFC West Champion.

Colonel Flagg
Dec 17th, 2008, 08:44 PM
Pac-man is right - the only way SD goes to the playoffs is if Denver loses two and they win out. They mathematically can't finish with a better record than either the Pats, Jets or the Ravens. So no wild card.

I think it's safe to say that the Ravens, after 12 years, have finally found their quarterback. Joe Flacco is steady beyond his years. Romo looked like the rookie at times tonight.

The Eagles are right back into the thick of the hunt now. I think that they'll beat Dallas at home next week, go to the playoffs, and that Donovan McNabb will be telling a lot of people to kiss his ass.
