OK, so the Supreme court ruled to strike down DC's gun ban (http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSWBT00928420080626?feedType=RSS&feedName=topNews&rpc=22&sp=true) (reportedly the strictest in the nation).
Of course, this ruling doesn't really throw out all established or future restrictions. All it really does is finally establish that the Second Amendment applies to the individual's right to own a gun instead of tying it to a militia.
I don't think this will abolish laws requiring registration and permits, but that depends on the lawyer arguing it I guess.
Still, it is a pretty significant decision that was a long time coming.
