And the scans:

Not sure if I like the NES graphics; I was hoping for something along the lines of PSX or SNES. I'm still pumped. This is a major win for WiiWare.

on-topic, this is the greatest thing ever. i wonder what new bosses they'll
have for the new game. I wish that magazine scan were easier to read. :L

At they very least this will shut up the fags that keep insisting that Mega Man and Bass is Mega Man 9. :)

If it really looks like what we're seeing in those scans, this will probably be my first WiiWare purchase. :O

Extra credit to Seven Force.

I'm still wondering what the fuck kind of weapons these guys are going to have. How the hell do you beat a robot master who controls Galaxies? Wily can't even conquer the world.

Fathom Zero

He'll probably shoot some kind of dark orb horizontally and you're going to have to jump over it and shoot at the same time.

Fuck I hate Megaman. The only good Megaman games were Legends 1 & 2.

Phoenix Gamma

Mega Man X 1-3 were awesome. The Zero games were also pretty solid too.

Megaman 2 I liked a lot and I had to beat the original out of sheer bravado, but I never really saw what was so great about the rest of the series. When questioning others about this I was told that I was retarded and laughed at!

I think Legends 1 and 2 are excellent, though.

Fathom Zero

I beat Megaman 2 on the Gameboy. It wasn't a Six Golden Coins, though.

Guitar Woman

I never figured out why the gameboy version took 4 bosses from MM3 and left out half the NES version's roster.

Legends wasn't that bad. I dug it, but the controls haven't aged well. If they made a new one with a better controller setup, I'd be pretty happy. I could do without the silly story, but Mega Man isn't a game you play for killer plot or anything :P

I'm pretty happy MM9 is coming to the other networks too. At least then more people get to play it. I'd have liked Wiiware to have an exclusive game worth mentioning outside of LostWinds and such, but the franchise is too big to keep to just one network. It's a good business move.

"Aaaaand there goes my chances of buying this. Sorry capcom but i'm not in the business of paying full price for games that could have been released a decade and a half ago..."

You fucking kids realize that NES games were like $80 when they came out, right? And this is going to be what, 10 bucks, tops? And that microsoft and sony charge the same price for downloads, they just make it look smaller by having their point system not equal whole dollars?

I've heard tell that the Lost Planet engine was made specifically to fit into a Mega Man Legends game, and that it's only a matter of getting Capcom to approve it.

I'm not a huge Mega Man fan, but you can add me to the list of Legends fans. I own Legends, The Misadventures of Tron Bonne, and Legends II, and I really hope they decide to continue the story and tie up some loose ends in a future sequel. Mega Man 2 still stands as my favorite of the side-scrollers.

Having said all that, Mega Man 9 looks like a worthy download. The old school graphics are a breath of fresh air. Visuals matter too much sometimes-- there are a thousand games that look better than, say, Tetris, that aren't nearly as much fun. I hope it starts a trend. There are a lot of 8- and 16-bit classics that deserve sequels (Punch-Out! anyone?). So making and releasing them on the cheap works for everyone, except those who are really into graphics.

Nick
Jul 12th, 2008, 02:57 AM
Speaking of 8-bit, why has Cave Story not been bought up and marketed to the masses yet.

Phoenix Gamma
Jul 12th, 2008, 03:30 AM
It was supposed to come to PSP (retail, mind you. Not homebrew like it is now). I forget who was supposed to do it, but it got dropped. IIRC, they were also going to update the graphics, much to the dismay of fans. This was a long time back, so I'm fuzzy on the details.

Anyways, homebrewers are working on bringing it to PSP anyways as-is, albeit widescreeen, which is pretty rad.

Because NES Mega Man boxart has a history of being utterly retarded, honorable mentions going to Mega Man 1's "ice cream man from the future visits Funky Land and stands funny and has a giant head tumor" (http://www.mobygames.com/images/covers/large/1104774873-00.jpg). Runner up goes to that European boxart where Mega Man is silver or some shit and looks like something out of Lost in Space (http://image.com.com/gamespot/images/bigboxshots/2/563442_58990_front.jpg).

Also, MM2 (US) boxart (http://www.destructoid.com/wp-content/uploads/2006/04/megaman2box_front.jpg) had Mega Man with a handgun as well, though he didn't have a second arm canon. I guess Capcom wanted it to be really campy, hence the eyepatch on Wily.

The first time that we heard the plans for Mega Man 9 here in the US, it sorta blew our minds. I was personally expecting (wishing for) a big-budget, brand-new Mega Man title along the same lines as the PSP classic, Mega Man Powered Up. When the team showed us the impossibly hard 8-bit revival that is MM9, the top of my head flipped open and my brain stepped out carrying a white flag of surrender. After that stunna moment, our team reconvened internally to figure out just what the heck it was we were working on.

Guys, holy shit, Capcom made another Megaman game! That's INCREDIBLE

This game just keeps getting better.

Also, I played it at the San Diego Comic-Con and it was perfection! Just like the classics. The chiptunes were great and the gameplay felt like it was just another lost level from Mega Man 2. Furthermore, it was hilarious seeing younger kids playing it and bitching about how hard it was... not realizing that this is how most of the games back then were. And let's be honest, once you figure them out, they're not that hard.

Phoenix Gamma
Aug 6th, 2008, 12:33 PM
Yea, I heard it kicked the balls off of people at E3. The disappearing blocks are probably going to make me whimper at least once :(

Once you get into that "Mega Man groove", you can power through the robot masters easily, but the final stages are always guaranteed to make you it's bitch. Curse that Dr. Wily!

I'm actually contemplating on buying that NES RetroPort to hook my NES controller up to my Wii. I have a few NES titles on here already, and I think it'd be just grand to play MM9 and the others with the original pad, just like God intended.

Should be coming out today, meaning it should be uploaded sometime tonight :D

Meanwhile the game's slated for the 22nd in Japan, so hopefully we'll get it soon :(

EDIT: Downloaded the soundtrack. Shit's awesome. I've decided to download the japanese version of the game via homebrew channel. I'll buy the US version when it hits, but I really wanna try this game out.
