Man alive, what part of the world do you live in?

I found out, at my last visit to the dentists, that I had impacted wisdom teeth that I honestly had no idea where there (I'm still not sure where the buggers are in my mouth). So now I've got to get them yanked.

Like the time I had to get my tetanus shot, I'm upset because I hear all of these stories from people who had their wisdom teeth pulled. And like with the tetanus shot, I'm told (by several of the same horror-story people) that this procedure is no big deal, won't hurt at all, etc.

Ugh, I keep hearing stories like "I couldn't eat solid food for days after!" A girl in my dance class also had hers pulled and came back with a huge bruise on her arm from the IV. I might add that I have this thing about not liking needles/tubes in my skin, so I'm also freaked that I'll need an IV.

kahljorn
Jan 13th, 2009, 08:06 PM
that girl's wisdom teeth were probably embedded into her bone, so they had to essentially chisel the teeth out of her jaw. That can be painful. But usually they just put you under an anaestetic and yank em out

I don't cover it a lot lest it be considered whining, but I was born with inoperable spinal cord cancer :P It was radiated into compliance when I was a toddler, but periodically sends out problems to make my life shit and the threat of return is always looming. I have quite the hate-hate relationship with my spine.

Muscle relaxers don't do a damn thing for me when my neck muscles seize up, but a shot of whiskey does. No idea why.

I was able to eat solid food just nothing that tough. I also dont remember an IV, just a shot of demerol. Of course... after being shot full of demerol all they could have done anything.

I had one taken out over the summer.
It was terrible.
I couldn't eat solid food for 3 weeks, mostly because they had to pull out some bone with it. I had a minor jaw fracture but on the other hand, I learned why people like vicodin so much.
As long as they give you drugs you'll be fine.
I believe I had posted pictures of my last tooth extraction. I call it the Igor Tooth.

Dixie
Jan 14th, 2009, 01:28 PM
Yeah, that's what cracked my jaw. My Igor Tooth was so deformed they could only get it out by pulling out a small part of bone along with it.
But by that point they had already shot my mouth up with so much anesthetic just so I could even open my mouth wide enough for them to even look at it.
Good times.
Still have one more that needs to come out too.

Oh geez!

On the plus side, if I'm given vicodin I'll actually find out what it's like to take it (I've only ever heard stories about, as I've never gotten hurt enough to need any for myself). It ought to be fun, as Excedrin alone can make me kind of loopy.

Trust me, that needle they stick in your gums is TOTALLY your friend. Do not fear it, infact if you can feel anything at all ask for more. Do not be afraid to ask for more. If you don't have enough anesthetic you'll regret not asking for more.
The first one I ever had pulled I made the mistake of not speaking up when I could still feel it. That bitch hurt terribly.
I've never had IV for a wisdom tooth extraction though.

For some reason they refuse to pull more than one at a time on me. All 4 of mine were impacted. Yours probably haven't erupted yet (that means they're probably still beneath your gums or maybe partially erupted, which means part of them is sticking out but most of them are still beneath your gums). Take my advice, if you can get all 4 out at one time DO IT! It really sucks to have to keep going back.

My dentist visits were always a nightmare because my enamel is radiation-damaged and they didn't let up with the metal instruments. I had two molars crack in half and abscess, and they had to come out (I was to the point where I probably looked like I was having a seizure if I accidentally touched one with my tongue).

So I was all freaked out when I went to the oral surgeon, but then I was introduced to this wonderful, wonderful concept of conscious sedation. Valium and versed, valium so you don't care at the time and versed so you don't remember it later.

They put the IV in, and literally...nothing. Blackness. I have no memory whatsoever of the procedure, although my mom was in the room and said I was conscious and grimaced as if I was in pain. I have zero recollection of what happened between when they stuck the IV in and when they were helping me out of the chair afterward.

When I went back the second time, I thought surely the first time was a fluke, and this would be painful and bad. But no, exact same thing. It was like the underpants gnomes with no step 2. They put the IV in,__________________ , they helped me out of the chair and I went home.

I was so utterly charmed by this I sent their office a big gift basket. I asked if there was any way I could have a valium and versed drip to wheel around with me all day so I'd have no recollection of having gone to work.

It was really very loose, banging around in my head. I was having trouble eating my slice of pizza, so my mom took a napkin and said something like "Hold on, you've got a piece of mushroom stuck in your tooth". This set off warning bells as I was eating a plain pizza (never did eat mushrooms), but I just to to say "Wait a - " before she reached in and yanked the thing out.

It didn't hurt to bad, but I did scream. Easier to eat without it though. :)

Thank you everyone. I actually am feeling better about it.

Before you get complacent... DON'T!

I had four of them, all impacted. I'm a goddamn neanderthal. They sliced open my gums, and I still have some weird feeling holes there today. I got one dry socket, which means the clot got popped and I didn't wake up until I swallowed enough blood to make me puke. Then food would get stuck in the hole, so I'd be washing out rotten meat with a syringe full of water. Did I mention that I was allergic to the painkillers? So I spent a week alternating between agonizing pain and uncontrollable vomiting :)

Oh, and some people "wake up" during the procedure. They can feel the yanking and the slicing and every ounce of pain, but they're blind, mute and paralyzed.
