View Full Version : What is Love?

I mean really, what is love? What does it mean when someone tells you they love you? What does it mean when they tell you they're in love with you?

I am sorely dissapointed that the first post of this thread didn't say, "Baby don't hurt me, no more" :(

Love is what one creates. It's the only way we know how to describe the sensation of attraction, and the feeling is much different than just being "happy".
When someone says that they love you, it's because you make them feel like that. Better than the best thing in the world, I guess.
What do I know, though :(
EDIT - After re-reading this post, I realize that it reeks of a 7th grade Honor's English class. Forgive me. :(

Love is a temporary madness. It erupts like an earthquake and then subsides. And when it subsides you have to make a decision. You have to work out whether your roots have become so entwined together that it is inconceivable that you should ever part. Because this is what love is. Love is not breathlessness, it is not excitement, it is not the promulgation of promises of eternal passion. That is just being "in love" which any of us can convince ourselves we are.
Love itself is what is left over when being in love has burned away, and this is both an art and a fortunate accident. Your mother and I had it, we had roots that grew towards each other underground, and when all the pretty blossom had fallen from our branches we found that we were one tree and not two.
- Captain Corelli's Mandolin
I think most people say I love you in the temporary madness stage and in their rush they tend to do silly things like get engaged and married. But as time goes on they realise that they aren't as compatible as they thought they were and it all rips appart. I think that is why divorce rate is so high, people marry because the other person makes them feel good over common interests and future goals.
I think there have been three people who I really loved that made me feel like that quote above, but we were too young in the end and looking back now, I see they couldn't quite give me what I really need.
I think being in love is the most wonderful feeling in the world and after the six months stage that feeling will come and go but the friendship you will have built is what will prove the test of time.
>: Except I've managed to get men that want to commit then they run away when things get tough. If this whole roots thing is true then they are more shallow than I thought!!!

so far, this is the best explanation I've seen.
I don't think I've ever been in love....I just don't know how it supposed to feel.

loving someone puts him on top of your priority list - like, before your own life. It's no fun, it's dead serious, it's dangerous.

Love isnt real. Its only an asinine emotional distraction which leads to sex. It messes you up for good, and you'll be lucky ever to get it together again. Look what it did to me.

How can it not be real, yet "mess you up for good" at the same time ? Logic isn't your forte, SMN.
Cosmo - I think some people never get to experience it. I am not sure whether it's a good or a bad thing.

I've been in love a few times. I've been though all sorts of emotinal hurt, and Phisical pain because of it, but it was all worth it. I would rather live in a world without Gin, cigarettes, and Modern Danish Furniture... then live in a world w/o love.

Love is letting someone see you piss on a tree and laughing about it then staring at the stars 5 mintues later while the waves crash down.
Seriously. I bet you cynical 16 year old cunts from hell think getting high and drunk is merely a fabrication of society to channel their Id through means of supposedly unintentional biologically motivated loss of inhibition. No, you just get drunk. Its real. You have to do it before it can be explained. Things like that do exist.
If you have to be depressing about it then consider it a bond between two people. Its the strongest one. Thats about as detailed as you can get since love varies between peoples.
