Question about a Question

simple question really, just don't know weather to post it in art shit or gaming, so figured I might as well drop it here.

How exactly can I rip sprites from videogames?
I don't mean single frames, which printscreen takes care of
I mean like moves.
I suppose I could rig fraps up and make an avi, but that seems stupid.
I noticed a few original ones here on I-mock, and figured I might as well ask

I know how to take screenshots, I meant how do I take moving sprites. I know how to make a gif frame by frame but I am lazy and getting screenshots of each little move is difficult.
I can find some sprite animations off google, but not from the games I play.
fraps can take video from pretty much any game, but they are huge avi files, a ten second video from unreal 2 was 200 mb

all I want to do is learn how to do the ripping so I can make horrid sprite movies that I never share with anyone and watch for my own amusement.

I'm honestly not trying to be funny, I just want to learn how to take moving sprites from a game. I understand some people feel the need to nail the new people to the post but honestly, what harm could come of it? it's a horrible game, known as swat kats.
the best I can do is horrible at best. I know how to make a gif from individual frames, I just want to know how to capture movement out of the game without ending up with a giant 200 mb avi.

I just used dr. divx and got it down to one mb, but it's still an AVI and a bit fuzzy looking
