View Full Version : like you vs. not like you

Ok, I have a question for all the people on here that have dated a lot of different people... do you think it's best to date someone that is like you, and has many common interests, or is the old adage of "opposites attract" true? I think it'd be better to date someone like you, but I'd still like to here from people with more experience than me.

Someone like you, takes longer to find things wrong with them.

I have little to no experience (about 3 girls really) but you're being too vague when you say "like you". This could mean anything. Simmilar interests? Or Simmilar personalities? There could be two people with no common hobbies or favorite anythings who get along amzingly because they're both intelligent simmilar thinking people with simmilar senses of humor.
But once again. My experience is dwarfed by others here I'm sure/

I like guys who are a challenge (ie abusive and whatnot).
BUT I do date passive, boring guys just for their $$$.

You're a cunt. Next person please.
"here could be two people with no common hobbies or favorite anythings who get along amzingly because they're both intelligent simmilar thinking people with simmilar senses of humor."
Good point, but one would suspect if you had similiar senses of humour that you would enjoy the same movies or TV shows or something like that. Let's say, by "like you" I mean quite a few of similiar interests and traits.

I really cannot stand people who are similar to me. All of my school-yard rivals were exactly like me in fact; so yeah, opposites must attract, at least as far as my case goes.
It is exactly like yin and yang- you need a different, yet compatable match.

Find someone with similar interests but a different (even opposite) personality. If you learn to understand one another, the personality conflict will just make the relationship deeper.

I recommend not picking someone who will take advantage of you, or someone that thinks all forms of conflict are bad (i.e. "I like this inconsequential little thing, but you don't. We disagree and the relationship is over because we'll never get along.") :)

I have a pretty solid theory that girls like to date guys that offer some of the same kind of protection that they felt from their fathers. You should be kind of like a father figure that is younger and not illegal to have sex with.
I don't have very much experience since I've only had 2 relationships that lasted for more than a year, but in the previous one and my current one (which is still going strong) I have made a special effort to make sure that the girl felt totally safe and taken care of when she's with me. If you never flake out and never appear weak or incapable, she will see you as reliable and masculine and it will trigger her instinct that tells her she's found a viable mate. Obviously most guys are gonna fuck this up sometimes but if you come close to this you can stand out from the other males in your competition area.
In terms of opposites and similarities it's pretty simple as far as I can tell. Your personalities should be similar enough that you get along well but it helps if there are little quirks about each of your personality that are different but not annoyingly so. Like stuff you can make fun of and love at the same time. Interests kind of work the same way.

I like guys that are not like me, and I like guys with different hobbies. If you go for a guy w/ the same hobbies then it's hard to say "I'm gonna go knit with the girls at sarah's house" and he says "awwww I wanna go knit :( " It takes away from your 'you' time. but like the guy I'm seeing now ownes a few semi-automatic weapons, I wanted to be on the SWAT team at one point, I like guns but have only shot a 9MM once so he's gonna take me shooting, it's something he enjoys that he can teach me about and then we can enjoy it together.

I'm not talking about being a father to a girlfriend, I'm talking about offering the feeling of security that the father offered. The way I worded it "kind of like a father figure that is younger and not illegal to have sex with." isn't good wording and it's creepy I admit, but that's not really what I meant. I meant the security thing.
Chimp I am SURE you haven't met a girl who would date her father, but every girl I've ever met wants to feel secure, and that's just part of the whole deal when it comes to boyfriends. The first male that offers security and comfort to a girl is her father and she tends to subconsciously compare other males to her father in terms of how safe they make her feel.

I prefer a woman who is simalar in personality, but differnet in intrests... Dating someone who is not going to get your jokes or understand where you are coming from is a bad Idea, well at least for me.
But then again most of my relationships last for only a few days-few months before I get bored.
Ok, i'm the last persn toask this... Except for maybe Achimp... HEHEHE

well, personally I prefer older women...(u probably know that all ready) But I usually fall 4 their personality 1st, and then become attracted to them. I think u should go for it if u can find someone with similar intrests as yourself, but it can sometimes become boring....talking and doing the same things, although if u meet someone too opposite, that might not last either... :love

Because they want someone to cook, clean, and look after them, plus the added benefits of sex and companionship. Moms do the first three, but obviously can't offer the second part.
I'm not saying all men are looking for that either. I'm not, although it'd be nice if she could cook, since a lot of women of my generation seem to have not bothered learning that skill.
