View Full Version : Are there like... any good sketch comedy shows on tv?

And don't say Chapelle's Show. It's not good enough.
For the longest time, whenever a great sketch comedy show stops, a new one starts; Kids in the Hall stopped in 1994, but the State started. The State stopped in 1995, but then Mr. Show started. Mr. Show stopped in 1998, but then Upright Citizens Brigade started. When that stopped, TV Funhouse was the closest we had to a "great" sketch comedy show.
I did a quick search for sketch comedy currently running, and we have Blue Collar TV, Chappelle's Show (some sketches are brilliant, but mostly I really don't like this show; I plan to make my own best-of compilation), Mad TV, and Saturday Night Live. The only reason I haven't noticed the lack of good sketch comedy on TV because I've been so focused on OLD good sketch comedy on DVD. :(

I liked saturday night live back in the Dana Carvey/Chris Farley/Adam Sandler/Phil Hartman/David Spade era, but nowadays its just boring and unfunny.
MadTV has a few good sketches(Steven Seagal show!), but overall its not that good.
I dont know about the other shows you mentioned.
In Finland theres currently a few sketch shows running: Saturday Night Live, MadTV, The Fast Show and Gavin Crawford show.

Yeah, the Fast Show is funny for a few episodes, then it's just dull as fuck. Must be the first sketch show based entirely on running jokes.

In the meantime, you can all watch my sketch comedy show and then rip it to as many shreds as you can.

Both Harry Enfield & Chums and The Fast Show aren't really intended to be seen as sketch shows in the American sense, so much as sitcom compilation shows. Neither are particularly great, in my opinion, and I never did like sketch comedy until I saw Mr. Show.
If you can find it online or whatever and you haven't already seen it, I'd recommend A Bit of Fry and Laurie for another British one. It began sometime in the late 80's and ended in 1995.

Little Britain is a fucking funny sketch show that was shown over here a while ago..
incidentally, Jixby: have you heard of filthy rich and catflap? Its the missing link between the young ones and bottom, and just came out on dvd...would tell you about it, but last saw it when I was about 12....bit weird as I recall, not as good as the young ones.

The first episode of Filthy Rich and Catflap is on the american's Young Ones DVD set, and also my video store has the whole series on VHS (PAL TRANSFERS) along with a bunch of other british stuff thats not really available in the states. I've been renting Comic Strip Presents videos like crazy :(

I wouldnt count reno 911 as too much of a sketch considering its more of a fake reality police show.
Chappelle Show wouldn't be half as bad as he didnt give away half the sketch when announcing it.

I used to have a book of all the scripts....fuck knows where that went. They were a bit hit and miss, but there were some gooduns...I liked 'The Beat Generation' and the 'Five go...' ones. The bad news ones were amazing, I would love to see those again.

the greatest video store EVA!!!
little britain rocks the socks off me, the radio version is very good as well.
as for current shows, i tend to avoid bo'selecta like the plague. as its main fanbase is made up of 11 years olds who like to hear the word 'fuck'
