Some good extreme/death/black/shred metal bands. I've been way out of the heavy scene for some time, and long to return to my roots.
*Looks in Helm's general direction*

It's all bout stupid metalcore these days so this will be a little 'extreme classics' rather than new new new stuff all the way.
*Suffocation. If you only get one record, make it 'Pierced form Within'. Standout track: s/t
*Obituary. 'Cause of Death' and 'Slowly we Rot'. Most distinctive vocalist in death metal. Defunct for years, now back together and I will see them live ina week! Standout track: Chopped in Half
*Dissection. Get 'Storm over Night's Bane'. It all shreds. No bad tracks. That's as good swedish black/death ever got.
*Origin. Jesus fucking christ. Most driving and brutal 'straight' death metal (this means no hardcore moshing faggotry around) around. Get their one album Standout track: Portal.
*Aggaloch: Great folkish black metal. Get album 'Pale Folklore'. Really distinctive stuff in a very oversaturated genre. 'The Painted Fire Across the Skyline' is a very good song to start with.
*At The Gates. If you don't have 'With fear I kiss the Burning Darkness' well... you should. Absolutely essential. Sounds very strange. The two guitarists never play the same riff at the same time and the drummer's nuts. That's the only record of theirs I really like but lots of people praise the latter day thrash attack material like 'Slaughter of the Soul'. Actually if you're more into metal thrashing madness than cold and empty extreme metal, you're better of with 'Slaughter...' too. Download 'Stardrowned' and 'Cold' and compare and contrast.
*Autopsy. This is a soft spot for me. Might not like. But I think they're one of the best death metal bands ever. I have everything, and there's not ONE song of theirs that doesn't make me want to bang my head and smoke a joint. And I detest drugs so that's a powerful effect to have on someone, heh. Start with song 'An Act of the Unspeakable' which sums up their sound great. Expect sludged out sloppy death metal with lots of doom breaks and great vocals.
*Carcass. You have Necrotisism and Heartwork, right? Good.
*Cephalic Carnage. An exception to my 'no core fags allowd' rule on this thread, simply because they're fucking insane. Get 'Lucid Interval' (song and album) and it'll blow your mind how it's like death-like technicality on a humourous grind band. In you also like extreme doom, their 21 minute song Halls of Amenti is awe.
*Cryptopsy. Just for their drummer. Best drummer in death metal right now. Get 'Voice of Unreason' from the album 'And Then You'll Beg' and see if it does anything for you. Sucky vocals, great band.
*Dark Angel. DARK FUCKIN' ANGEL!
*Dismember. Get 'Like an Everflowing Stream'. Personally, I think this is the epitome of early Swedish death metal. Not Entombed, not Grave. Although you'd do well to get 'out of the grave' and 'clandestine' by those other two bands too. Standout track: Overture for the Requiem (I think that's the name).
*The Haunted: first s/t album only. Then they go to suck completely.
Standout track: 'Bullet Hole'
*Human Remains: EVERYTHING
*In The Woods... : 'HEart of the Ages' and 'Strange in Stereo'. Beware, they sound completely different. The first is pagan black metal (extremely good, though) and the second album is gothed out proggish psychedelic ambience, but good! I love this band, but you have to have a tolerance for lots of avant garde twists and turns. Standout tracks: 'In the Woods' and 'Titan Transcendence' respectively.
*Kaamos: a return to the old swedish death metal sound. Very good. Only one album out, all killer.
*Lethargy: crazy technical death metal band, two members of which later formed Mastodon. Very very technical. The watchtower of death metal. Very funny sometimes too. You could get a two disk complation of everything they've done. I really like them.
*Maudlin of the Well. Indescribable. Get 'Bath' and 'Leaving your Body Map'. Standout tracking here is unfair.
*Naked City. Jazz thrash grind. Get their album ' Torture Garden ' most tracks are really short and great so it's easy to get a good sample of what this is like
*Nasum. They've gone from good to better. Their new one is awe. Called Shift. If you like 'clean' grindcore, this is it.
*Nocturnus: The Key. This album is insanely technical and very groundbreaking back for the eighties. Substandard drumming, but good god, the guitarist! 'Lake of Fire' is a good track to start with.
*The Red Chord. Another exception to the core fag thing. Very good sometimes. There's some filler on their debut, though.
*Strapping Young Lad. Idiosynchratic band with wonderful music. Get everything.
*Tiamat. Get Astral Sleep only. Maybe Wildhoney for more chilled out moments. As a death metal band, Tiamat were awesome. Now they've gone to shit, mostly.
*Watchtower. Aquired taste. One of my top 3 bands. Creators of technical metal/'prog'. Think Rush, only metal, only crazier, only some of the best musicians in the metal scene back in the eighties. The vocals are so so.
That's it. I'll leave it to Ninjavenom to suggest hordes of other death metal bands.

i havent listened to much death for a while either, but a few more:
decapitated: insanely young band from poland. get winds of creation and remind yourself the drummer was about 17 when they recorded it.
commit suicide: nowhere near as good as origin (and make sure you get the new versions of origin's songs, a good few were re-recorded for the new album a LOT faster than the s/t) but still the drummer is pretty cool, and the comparisons are there.
harakiri: death/grindcore band from willowtip.
tarantula hawk: droning prog black metal. odd.
nile: egyptian-themed hell. i would say battle music, but -
bal sagoth: BATTLE MUSIC

Helm listed some excellent albums and im sure youll find something you like from there. However I would like to add a few bands to that list:
Dark Tranquillty - Damage done
Great album imo. I havent heard any other stuff from them, but I´ve heard that their other albums are good too.
Edge Of Sanity - Crimson II
A friend of mine suggested this album to me and I must say its excellent.
Children Of Bodom
All of their albums are great.
Strapping Young Lad - SYL
This was already suggested by Helm, but this band is so good it deserves to mentioned a second time. I higly recommend this album. Gene Hoglan is a fucking god.
Hypocrisy - Catch 22
Fantastic. Catchy songs.

Catastrophic have a sound very similar to that of Obituary's sludgy death sound. See also: Lowbrow
Vader are like thrash metal bastard children. They're fast as fuck but they still give you a thickness that you'll only get from death metal. Check out the title track from "Black to the Blind" and you'll be hooked immediately.
Yattering are becoming pretty big overseas for their tight, powerful approach to Brutal DM. They're one of the few bands in the genre that don't sound like Suffocation ripoffs. See also: Vomitory, Obscenity.
If you're feeling like listening to any old Carcass stuff, reach for Regurgitate instead. If you're looking for Heartwork-era Carcass, go for Ghoul. Don't bother with any other Carcass worship except possibly The County Medical Examiners, if you want something as close to Carcass as possible without being the real deal.
If you like At the Gates, check out The Great Deceiver, the album "A Venom Well Designed" in particular.
Check out Skitsystem if you like Nasum.
If you want some thrashy grindcore, do yourself a huge favor and collect everything possible by 324 and Discordance Axis, as well as Birdflesh. Also get Bathtub Shitter's
"Fertilizer" EP. Foreigners seem to do grind right.

Baphomet, the US one. They only have one album that I know of, but it has a cool rhythmic intensity to it, kind of like Suffocation which you definitely should check out. Buy the Human Waste EP (Suffocation) if you can, Infecting the Crypts is the best death metal song ever, and the title track has the most ass kicking intro I've ever heard.
Carpathian Forest are a pretty cool half-joke black metal band, they're kind of like Cradle of Filth with balls.
Emperor's In the Nightside Eclipse is always a good choice for black metal, if you haven't already listened to it.
Close to a World Below by Immolation is a pretty damn good death metal album too, with some of the catchiest blasphemous lyrics in metal :D
Spawn of Posession is a really good technical death metal band.
Windir is a black metal band a lot of people seem to like. To me it sounds more like classical music than any other supposedly 'neo-classical' black metal band, but sometimes it just sounds like cheesy power metal.
Sorry if the descriptions of some of the bands are kind of stupid, but I don't really know anything about music :/

I agree completely with helm and ninja, but also
Aborted, god damn good band from belgium, their newest full length "goremageddon" is good, but i mostly recommend Their second album, Engineering the dead
good tracks : gurggling rotten feces, skullfuck cresendo
Dying Fetus : i know i'll catch some flak for this, but they are a god damn talented band and haven't put out a lackluster album. Destroy the opposition is my personal favorite album.
good tracks : justifiable homocide, One Shot, One kill
Disgorge(mex) : carcass worship at its best.
Vile: very brtual death, Depopulate is a damn fine album.
Exhumed : Their newest album, anatomy is destiny, brutal as hell, i would call if their "heartwork".
Severed savior : spawn of possession is better, but this is also a damn fine band.
Pretty much any band on Unique leader(the label) you can't really lose with.

The crown -crowned in terror
holy terror-all their albums
the haunted-like helm said
scariot- listen to the clynic one of the coolest thrash songs ever
nevermore-dead heart in a dead world
these are all thrash mind you
Helm

The Crown are swedish Death Thrash. Very boring and mediocre.
Holy Terror suck.
I don't know who Scariot are.
Nevermore were originally power metal, and now are some modern metal hybrid that doesn't deserve to be called thrash. If you get anything by Nevermore, make it Politics Of Ecstasy and not that horrible Dead heart album. Listen to me on this one.

Sorry boss, i've gotta agree. The Agent Steel stuff i found sounded like simple Judas Priest idolization. The Crown aren't that bad, and i dunno what ye've got against Holy Terror. I can see the complete negation of everything but Politics of Ecstacy (fucking awesome album), but not The Crown. Don't bother with Scariot, they'll make you think of Arch Enemy.
