The REAL goth scene

Its been bugging me lately that people here have been really bashing the goths and no one appears to even know what the scene is about. First off there are quite a few of us who do not cut ourselves that seems to be a huge misconception because the ones that do that like to show it off for attention wich in all reality annoys goths to no end. second, the majority of us HATE Hot Topic, not only are most of the clothes they sell really poor quality and overly expensive but most of them arent even goth at all. Third we do not listen to Marilyn Manson and most of that other mainstream crap that has been labled goth we listen to bands like Siouxse and The Banshees, the Joy Division, Bauhaus and countless other non-mainstream bands. There are also a lot of male goths that are not homosexual (myself included) and there arent all that many fat gothic girls they just stick out because they wear clothing that was origianaly sesigned for girls who weigh 110 pounds and have been made in plus sizes thatnks to Hot Topic

BTW I loved the Whiny Kids Goth pages i thought it was great at poking fun at the losers who make the goth scene look bad

i dont really follow standards but as with any culture people do things to fit in with peers and and communities form amongst people who like the same things thats why you can generalize a culture i dont always wear all black or make up and i listen to lots of music that most certainly isnt considered goth but i listen to goth music a lot as well and i out of preference choose to wear gothic clothing most of the time i certainly dont feel that im doing it to fit in i do it because i want too

I actually dont wear much makup if any at all, maybe just a bit of eyeliner if i go out clubbing. I dont do anything to my hair as that it goes down past my shoulders and unless i want to get dreadlocks (which i dont because they smell horrible) i cant wear any weird hairstyles. actually most of the more mature goths dont wear that much makeup and have pretty normal hairstyles if you dont believe me you can go to a gothic nightclub and see for yourself

Dreadlocks do not smell horrible at all, it only depends on your personal hygiene standards. Actually, normal hair will smell a lot more horrible a lot faster if you don't wash it than dreadlocks.

Siuxsie, Bauhaus and Joy Division are not 'underground'. You're not underground when a single song of your band has been so hideously overplayed that everybody goes 'oh their singer hung himself :tear' whenever it is played AGAIN in an internet cafe or something.

The glamour punk (because that's what 'goth' is) thing is long dead and all that remains is a 'scene' of people refusing to let go because they like the clothes too much. So grow the fuck up and stop trying to belong in any subcultural group. I listen to Bauhaus, Joy Division and the Banshees and I don't have to identify with the gothic scene, fake or otherwise. To hang around with other idiots so in need of an identity that they're willing to fashion one out of fishnet and eyeliner is not a prequisite for appreciating the music, you know.

There is no rules to being a goth. If you say you are a goth, you are a goth. It doesn't matter if you wear plaid or black clothing, or if you listen to Mrs. Spears or Cannible Corpse. Unless some kind of international goth organization is made setting a standard to become a goth you can do whatever the hell you want while calling yourself whatever the hell you want.

For example: 1. International Goth Membership Card.
2. Standard metal spiked shoulder pads.
3. Weekly suicide letters
4. You must religiously listen to [insert bands here] and only [insert band here].

Well you get the idea. Saying something isn't real goth when its labeled goth is a lie. It just means you don't want it to associate with your subculture, but you don't have any choice in that. It is the individual(s) who you don't want to be goth's choice not yours.
