View Full Version : My new shotgun

I just bought a 12-gauge 8 shot pump action shotgun.
If you want to look at it check it out here: http://www.winchesterguns.com/prodinfo/catalog/detail.asp?cat_id=512&type_id=104&cat=012C
This is the first gun I have ever owned. I have shot handguns before, but never a shotgun. I particularly like it because it makes a wonderful cocking sound that I think would scare most burglars off. I plan to use it for home defense.
Anyway, does anybody have a lot of experience with shotguns or guns in general? I'd like to take a safety course, but I have no idea where I would do that. Also, what kind of kick should I expect on this thing? Do I brace it against my shoulder or will I end up with broken bones that way?
Also, if somebody does break in, what precautions do I need to take before shooting them to keep myself from getting sued/arrested?
I'd also like to know about what different kinds of bullets there are and what their advantages/disadvantages are.

In my (limited) experience with firearms, you should keep the shotgun tight against your shoulder to minimize kickback.

Be careful when aiming your shot to not place your eye in the way of said kickback. Alot of people get very very bad balck eyes in such a manner.
I think.

I'm not too sure about the US Justice system, but to legally shoot someonen, they themselves have to be armed before you can get off the hook with reasonable force.
For home defence use Slugs to minimize the damage to surrounding houses, your house etc.
Go to any shooting range, they will probably help you out with finding a safetey course.
Up in the great white north we have to take saftey courses before we can even get near buying guns :(

Just remember, you're more likely to shoot a family member. So, I hope your aim is bad.

Also, if they decide to run away and you shoot them anyways, I believe the law considers you the bad guy.

My cousins live in New Jersey and my three direct relatives live in New York and Florida.
Seeing as how I am in Indiana and my family never visits I think it would be very unlikely for me to shoot any of them.

in california, if there is forced entry with crimnal intent its legal to shoot them. my bro has an sks and almost has the house broken into. the robber saw the gun and booked. my grandma was there and yelled that he should shot him and pulled the body inside.

I beleive they need to be armed with a gun.
Its lawful to fire on someone for entering with criminal intent, but that doesn't render you immune if say the intruders family wants to sue.

I hit the add reply button in the My New Rifle thread (http://www.i-mockery.net/viewtopic.php?t=20115) and somehow the reply ended up here. Strange. Well, I'll move it back there.
