View Full Version : Miss Modular, Movie Producer?

If you've been reading my blog lately, I've been talking about a script I've been putting together called The Now People. Its nature is a tad unconventional, so I'm not really going to shop the script around to Hollywood production companies.

I've been shopping a treatment around for some time, but I've only gotten one response back. I've been thinking in the meantime, once the first draft is finished, to start coordinating a package to shop around to financiers. I've got an accomplished music video director interested in collaborating with me. This particular project will be on a larger scale than RoG's Zombie movie, but at the same time dealing with the same exploitation matter that RoG is dealing with. I have a couple of worries, though.

1.) I don't know if I should attempt to produce a movie when I haven't even spent time on a movie set. I have read a few books on producing Independent Films, most notably Christine Vachon's Shooting To Kill, which has really come in handy in explaining a lot about what happens on a movie set and what a producer really does. Experiences tend to be most rewarding when you don't really know what you're doing, but should I wait to do this kind of thing until I've had some on-set experience?

2.) I'm not totally comfortable of producing the whole thing by myself. I could handle coordinating the creative talent, but the administrative parts (film stock, budgeting, crew, dailies, etc.) would be a little more difficult. I'd rather work with someone who would have a better understanding with numbers.

Does anyone have any advice on what I should do? Do you think I should go for it, or wait? Any advice is helpful.

"...which has really come in handy in explaining a lot about what happens on a movie set and what a producer really does."

A producer's job is simple: get a spiffy, important looking title on the movie in exchange for putting up a bunch of cash.

So unless I can find a few rich people to really help fund my project, I'm guessing I'm gonna have hundreds/thousands of "producers" ;)

As for your fears of taking on the project without having any prior experience. Fuck 'em. It's your vision, you should do whatever you want. Hell, whenever I get my zombie project off the ground, I'll be a lot more than just "writer/producer" or whatever. And I guarantee you, one of my titles on the film will be "Janitorial Services (ie: puke cleaner-upper)".

All I need is to find some rich people who will help fund the damned thing. >:

Mod and Rog: When you get to the point you're shooting, if there are any shortish character roles, give me a call. I'd make the time.

Max, you have to be in the movie regardless. And no, you don't have a choice in the matter.

I wann a be a "gaffer". I don't even know what "gaffer" is but it sounds so mafioso. Plus, I'm bursting to unleash, at the right moment, the reply "Gaffer, I nearly killed her!" Wucka, wucka, wucka! I suck. Anyway, I'd be happy with "Guy #4 In The Park". :/

I always thought of you as more the 'best boy' type.

If kellychaos gets to be the best boy, I want to be the best boy grip ;)

Or the key grip. I remember the first Naked Gun movie's credits explaining what it was, but I didn't stop the movie to read.

I'm pretty sure a gaffer is the guy in charge of electrical equipment. I'm now glad I wasn't asked what a grip is on my oral exam.

A Producer is the guy that has to keep the whole thing going, from finding the funding to bitchslapping the actors to organising the release of the feature, the producer has to be on hand at all times, what you're thinking of is an Executive Producer.

Roger, I've already explained to you that the "fluffer" doesn't really appear on camera. He'll just be helping the actors stay...interested.

Oh he'll be doing a LOT more than fluffing. But when the time for that comes, I'm sure you won't mind if we borrow some of your neverending supply o' lube.

They were the first proponents of the Akinson's diet. How do you think that they stay so trim ... aside from their flesh rotting off, I mean.

P.S. Anyway Miss Modular, good luck with your plans ... notice how I didn't say "dreams". :wink

A gaffer is the dude who holds the microphone above the characters, hopefully just out of the scene.

So I'd be "Mr. Microphone". :)

Obscure reference: "Hey babe! Be back to pick ya up later." ;)
