View Full Version : Look-and-Click Adventure Games

This was the best genre of video game ever.

For those of you who don't understand what I'm talking about, I'm referring to games like King's Quest and Leisure Suit Larry, where you would wander around and collect/use items and whatnot.

The best ones were Leisure Suit Larry 7, and King's Quest 5 and 6. But the genre just seems to be dead now. KQ8 was more of an action game, with no new games in the series being announced. And LSL was killed off by Sierra. :(

I don't know any other games, since these, that use this play method, but it was the greatest thing ever.

Discuss, and suggest games for me to look into (if any exist). :(

If you haven't checked it out already, definitely look into Sanitarium. Totally underrated and probably my favourite in that point and click 'genre'.

There are Broken Sword and Discworld games too i think that would fit into the genre. Broken Sword games are pretty descent.

This genre of game was definitely among the greatest if not greatest ever. Games like Monkey Island, Space Quest, and King's Quest were all obsessions of mine back in the day.

Something that might interest you... I'm not gonna go into any detail about it, but FatSatan and I are planning on collaborating to make a flash game from that genre. It will be insane if we can pull off what we've already talked about.

Monkey Island slipped my mind, for some reason.

But the thing is, all these games are older. I don't know the first thing about emulation for old PC games. But more importantly, I want them to make NEW games like this. :(

Unless there ARE new games like this, and I just don't know about them. :(

Meh, I'll look into all these tomorrow.

I want NEW games though. We should make out own video game company, that deals specifically with these types of games.

Sanitarium is only a few years old, and was indeed great.

These days there's very few point 'n click adventures coming out, and most of the time they're in a 1st person 3D perspective, and/or devoid of other characters for the sake of sticking in nonsensical puzzles, like the Myst series (which I don't care for).

A few years ago there was a game called the Longest Journey which I heard good things about... I meant to check it out, but forgot. And now I can't find it because stupid Amazon won't ship videogames outside the US.

I :love Sanitarium.

unfortunately it literally took me more than a year to figure out what the hell I should do in the mutant town, and after that I couldn't get past the new asylum even if I were to be omniscient or something.

Damn it was hard, but it was so goddamn fun.

The Simon the Sorcerer games were awesome.

Return to Zork counts as a look-and-click adventure, too. :love

Zork games rock.

Try Deja Vu, Shadowgate and Uninvited for the NES. They're fun.

There was this one game I had for the Apple IIGS called Gold. It was fucked up stuff, in order to start the game you'd have to answer a historical question or you'd get hanged. (though there were answers in the book anyways) Playing that game was like playing a booby trapped version of the old times, since it's was easy to die in so many insane ways (I once died when I ate a poisionous pig)

I don't know if the Deja Vu type games count as this but another I played was one I forgot the name of, it was where you had some magical hoola hoop and your dog jumped through it, then you did and you went into a crazy alter-dimension, there were like walking noses and eyes and your dog owned a giant company. I liked it more than Gold.

There's apparently a new game in the genre (sort of) coming out in the fall, called Syberia 2. It looks awesome, and features that look-and-click gameplay. But I don't know how good it'll be.

For example it seems you just click on everything with one cursor. What I liked the most about games like King's Quest and whatnot, was the freedom to use your various senses when you felt they were needed. Also, I don't know how the inventory will work, if you even have one.

It seems it's mostly puzzle solving, and no so much an adventure. Anyone heard anything about it?

Syberia 2 looks pretty awesome. The first one got some pretty good reviews so maybe I'll go buy it and try it out.

Return to Zork
Zork Nemesis
Schism (this is more a puzzle/brain challenge type of game than an item collecting one, but its the same design)

Zork: The Grand Inquisitor SUCKED. >:
Its was goofy as hell even for a Zork game. And thats saying alot.

I thought Z:GI was a lot better then Zork Nemesis. It was at least funny and was full of in-jokes wherease Nemesis was just who knows the fuck where.

I still don't understand the plot of that game. :/

EDIT: We might as well add Myst and Riven to the list. Those games were the shit. :)

Sierra is putting out a new Sam & Max game and a new Full Throttle game. They're 3D, but in the same genre.

I'm talking about adventure games, Chimp. They don't count.

Myst was the most boring shit in the whole fucking world. Pretty, yes. But it was boring, filled with nonsensical puzzles, and had no point.

In an act of splendid retardation, Full Throttle 2 was recently cancelled. :( Also, they're by LucasArts.

I've never been able to get into 1st person adventures, where you can't see your own character and rarely meet any other characters. I'll take "use screwdriver on armadillo" over "reassemble slimy alien bulbs in the correct order" any day.

I heard it wasn't really cancelled, just that its back in the drawing board to make it more of an adventure/action game instead of an action/adventure game. Becasue alot of the hardcore LucasArts adventure gamers didn't like to way it was turning out.

FS
Sep 4th, 2003, 03:54 PM
Could be, but I think that's just a rumor spread by fans. All gaming sites used the word "cancelled" and I think even Lucasarts.com did. They've "stopped production" on the game because they don't want to disappoint the fans. Sounds weird to me, but I think that they'd make it more clear if the game was just going back to the drawing board.

Sam & Max looks pretty weird in 3D, kind of outdated silicon graphics... I think they would've done better to use cell-shading or just regular 2D animation for it.

I liked Riven a lot better than Myst. I don't know why, probably because it was a bigger area, or maybe just because I found a dead body in it. :\

The creators Cyan also made another game called the Manhole, it was meant for kids and there was no plot really, I enjoyed it when I was 7.

Damnit where is that game now. >:
