FUCK this game

FUCK the fact that in the Striker Cup I am UNDEFEATED until elimination play, wherein the FIRST PERSON I FACE drinks a gallon of Michael Jordan's Secret Stuff and knocks me the fuck out

FUCK the fact that, when behind by two points, Toads are enchanted with the ability to make red-ball shots FROM HALF COURT

FUCK this

FUCK this

I guarantee this story will warm your heart, though!

I went online later tonight and played a few rounds; my record is 26 and 11, a little bit over 2:1, not too bad. I expected to play someone about my level.

After a few matches with some worthy competitors, I come up against someone named "ino", all lowercase. She has no record, as this is her first game online. She picks Yoshi and I use Waluigi.

Turns out, this very well might've been her first game EVER. I was pulling off 6-ball megastrikes in the center of her half with no interruptions. In the first game I am relentless, getting a 14 - 0 victory. The second game I loosen up a little and she gets a miracle goal from half-pitch by Yoshi, resulting in a 7 - 1 finish.

I leave the game two wins and 40 points richer, and search for another...and, wouldn't you know it, ino shows up again. She picks Peach and I decide to go with my number 2 as well, Diddy. The first game goes very much like the first bout with Yoshi, and I win 12 - 0.

The second game, though, with about 45 seconds left on the clock and an 8 - 0 scoreboard, this girl gives up and starts running the ball into HER OWN goal. To show my appreciation for being such a good sport in the face of such bullshit matching, I quickly steal the ball and jump around with Diddy for a good thirty seconds ("HA-HA, HO-HO, HEE-HEE, YA-HA, YA-HA") and, finally, effortlessly jump over my own goalkeeper.

Then I got the animation where Diddy cries and kicks the dirt...and I lost it.

For some reason, I'm completely fine with people Toadjumping but I HATE IT when people teleport into the goal. I guess I just assume that there's a 1 in 5 chance you'll actually jump the goalie but, honestly, if you time it right you can get it every time. I think it's more because if you run into your goal and wait for him instead of chasing him, you can stop it.

Some asshole was beating me by one with a minute left on the clock and decided to hoarde the ball on his side, passing it around the goalie.

I caught him at the right time and checked the ball into the goal and tied it, then Toadjumped him in sudden death. I made him watch ALL THE REPLAYS.

I still love this game.

Right now may main GANG is Peach/Daisy with two shyguys and a drybones. Shyguys are uncannily good at making shots for some reason, even though they're supposed to be 'balance' characters.

MarioRPG

My friend and I made up a game of volleyball today.

Two minutes, no shooting, just lob passing. You try to gain control and lob pass it to others...at the end of the game, whoever has the most possession wins.

My friend and I just played, and he accidentally got a goal via lob-passing to Toad while Toad was standing in the net.

Also: I am now officially running with Junior. I really like his special, his character and the fact that he can get an immediate goal.

After playing a bit more online, I encountered a Petey captain with Monty, Monty and Hammer Bro sidekicks (i clobbered him), and a Striker of the Day playing Daisy and three Dry Bones who did literally nothing but underhanded tricks, like constant teleportation and the Defensive player chip-shot (i d/c'ed)

Honestly, how can you defend against that? All four characters are incredibly fast, have high defense, and all of them have a grand amount of SUPER TRICKS. If you don't know your opponent's team, you can't even attempt to counter-match. It's like a three-ring circus, my ONE SLOW CHARACTER holding down my entire team because this fucker is chip-shooting for the eighth time.

Worse than that, I hate the people that say it's bad to disconnect, ever. It's a waste of my time to let Johnny Twinkletoes do his magic for three minutes. I never disconnect on a genuinely good player, only on the ones that only play to win and will stop at nothing to do so. It's just not fun.

I sure hope that Nintendo realizes online games are more fun when the matchmaking isn't complete horseshit

I just got paired with some guy who was ranked 198 or something, wheras my ranking isn't much better than 3000 currently and I haven't even won an online match yet or made more than one goal per game.

I actually started off by hitting him with Birdo's skill shot, which i haved dubbed "Shut the Fuck up, Donny" in reference to it's Bowlingball like attributes, after which he proceeded to end me.

Soccer

The AI for anything beyold level 3 has a ridiculous case of Soul Calibur syndrome, I have the absolute worst luck in online matches because 90% of my games are against SOCCER ROBOTS who somehow are able to have all their guys in the perfect position to pass the ball around like GREASED LIGHTNING and keep me from having it for the entire match, and all the online communities I've looked at who set up their own matches are full of people who would offend Dylan TNGA with how pretentious they are. GW, it takes a while. I've never been as good at a game as I am with this one, and it's only because I beat the single-player campain AND all of the events before going online, so I had a good idea of the basics and my playing style. After I got online, I found out about trickshots and I only got better from there.

If I do say so myself, I'm pretty vicious. My best record so far has been 63 - 1, and I have an overall record of 444 - 62. I use Waluigi with Toad, Boo and Birdo as my primary, Mario with Monty, Koopa and Boo as secondary.

Anyway, my friend code is 386661 354279 and I play as Coney Isle. JOIN ME.

That's funny, my team as of now is the same as yours, but with Daisy because I love her captain special trickshot. And because I also love Daisy in general.

Let me also say that yeah, the online community is full of idiots. I was on GameFAQs for a while and met a few cool people, but eventually commited hara-kiri because the majority of them are utter douchebags. I was asked to join a clan and told them to fuck off.

One of the best things you can get down is Boo-charging: begin charging the ball by holding B, then deke in any direction and continue charging until you pass. It's an instant white ball, easy to set up a shot with Birdo.

MarioRPG
Jan 15th, 2008, 04:29 PM

P.S I hate birdo and all who use him.

Guitar Woman
Jan 15th, 2008, 05:39 PM
Only characters I have a problem with are Hammer Bros and Koopa.

Koopa's got a way too powerful tackle for a goddamn balance character, and Hammer Bros. skillshot and deke are both ridiculous. If you time it right you can keep everyone off you and score every time. >:

Schimid
Jan 15th, 2008, 06:25 PM
Hammer Bro is just so easy to counter, you have to get the timing down first. If someone's HAMMER HAMMER HAMMERing, just wait until he comes back down and STRIKE

I found a video of an Australian Waluigi player. He is SICK.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Crll-G6IXgk

Most of these aren't really applicable in a real match, but Wall-Surfing is my new trick of choice and if that fails I go for the Wall-Magnified Shot. I might stay with the same trick I've been doing, which is a half-chip at the goalie, vine up to the ball and crack it in.

God, I love Waluigi. :=

MarioRPG
Jan 15th, 2008, 06:58 PM
I can see using the fake shot online if I was lucky, and maybe the surfing in single.

I have the hardest time maintaining my temper with this game too. With most sports games, even. The better I am at a game, the shorter amount of time it takes for me to go into a murderous rampage.

For instance, if everything I do fails in TF2 and I'm killed 10 times in a row without response, I'll scream and snarl and smash. I'm not very good at TF2.

If someone so much as makes two shots in a row on me in Strikers, I'm liable to kick in the TV. I'm very good at Strikers. Hell, I get mad before the match even begins if they pick a captain I hate. DK and 3 Boos just adds onto that and by that point I'm usually hot as hellfire. And that's even before the Boo-dekes!

EDIT - I also might add that I have this arrogant mindset that everyone that plays online games is a tremendous douchebag and I am a Fonzie swimming in a sea of Cunninghams. I hate being beaten by Cunninghams.

Guitar Woman

Is there any sort of logic behind how good or bad the AI's goalie is

I'm using the banana shield thing to pull 5 ball red line megastrikes in the Striker cup and I get shut out EVERY FUCKING TIME >:

Guitar Woman
Jan 18th, 2008, 01:19 AM
Also, I ruined a nunchuck today!

The fact that the other guy can charge up a megastrike while his teammates tackle me into oblivion is the fucking line, ok. That is CHEATING.

Speaking of tackling, by the way, I get knocked off my ass literally every 5 seconds by everyone with a Monty Mole, which is fucking ridiculous. You'd think a toad with a mushroom could outrun one of those fuckers, but NO.

This is less like Soccer and more like a new sport altogether, which can be best described as Clusterfuck Ball.

MLE
Jan 18th, 2008, 01:19 AM
after the computer gets to a certain level of difficulty, you have to learn to make shots other ways. (very similar to how online as soon as you get someone that even kinda knows what they're doing, you really can't rely on megastrikes)

Guitar Woman
Jan 18th, 2008, 01:22 AM
I generally rely only on tricks like Toadjumping or teleporting, with the occasional lucky actual shot from Birdo. Megastrikes are nice when you can get them, though, and since the banana wall is generally the best use for the item I don't like to pass up the opportunity.

I still love this game. ;_;

After EXTENSIVE PLAY tonight, I have made four IMPORTANT DISCOVERIES.

1) Chipping the ball as a defensive character is super effective. Not only does the pass get there quicker, but it disorients the other player. The camera only loosely follows a chipped ball, which is perfect for setting up surprise power shots. The downside is that you have to have a good idea of where all of your players are at all times and sometimes the lines just don't connect like they should. Oh well.

2) Chipping the ball against the wall as a power character looks awesome and gives a HUGE sense of satisfaction. I don't know whether it's more likely to go in or not.

3) There's a trick called a parallel slam, where you chip the ball up parallel to the goal and kick in your own chip. Only Boo, Waluigi and Hammer Bro can do it. I've found a 99% effective way of doing it, and that's to throw up the chip and then quickly cradle the A button with your thumb followed by the B button with your forefinger. If done right, you'll tell the game to switch to another character only to immediately override that command with a shot. It's an exercise in timing and gets a little frustrating, but I was able to pull it off seven times in a row at one point.

4) I play as ChadWarden online, so it's only fitting that I name my new move the ballin' drop. Do a parallel slam, only chipping for about .2 of a second longer. Then, and this is the hard part, hit the A button at the PRECISE TIME. What'll happen is you'll pass the ball even further vertically, giving it to a waiting sidekick eager to kick it in. This one's even tougher than number 3 and I can't do it with any sort of regularity, but it's still really fancy.

I wish I could win money for this shit.

Guitar Woman
Feb 7th, 2008, 12:16 AM
I don't think I've ever seen a less accessible or more frustrating game than this one. >:

I'm convinced I'm really not going to be able to finish the single player, ever, because the computer is a CHEATER CHEATER CHEATER CHEATER CHEATER CHEATER CHEATER CHEATER CHEATER CHEATER CHEATER CHEATER CHEATER CHEATER CHEATER CHEATER CHEATER CHEATER CHEATER, but after playing a bunch of online matches there are a lot more people at or near my skill level these days. Matches are still random, though, so half the time I'm paired up with guys so good that they score without me even knowing what the fuck they just did.

I keep looking for communities to get around this, but really, everyone who hangs out in that sort of place is a complete bastard.

It depends, really; there are all sorts of tournament organizing softwares out there, so I think I should be able to handle it. If it gets too strenuous or if I can't do it because of time restraints I'll be sure to let you know.

Thank you so much for doing this though :=

I'm currently looking closer at my playing style and compilling a list of what I like to think aren't exactly advanced tactics persay, but more along the lines of tips that could benefit everyone, not just experts.

There's a HUGE group of people who play this game, or who have played, and just haven't been able to get too good at it because they've been disheartened by the bullshit online matchmaking or ridiculously steep difficulty curve. They aren't getting support from GameFAQs because they're all elitist dickheads. If we tap into that group and help make them better, there could potentially be an actual MSC scene. Imagine that.

EDIT - In fact, here's an example. Let me know if you think people would find things like these useful.

In the case of a loose ball, assess your options. If there's no-one around, pick it up and continue. If both you and your opponent are relatively equidistant to the ball, let him have it. Several things can happen at this junction; either he will turn and clobber you for being near the ball (which will give you an item, possibly one that can take him out anyway), or he will pick up the ball. Now that he has the ball, lay into him with a huge hit. You're effectively taking out one of his players (presumably a fast one, too) without giving him an item. You're also retaining posession.

Guitar Woman
Feb 7th, 2008, 02:55 PM
That was sort of what I was shooting for, yeah

I just hope I can keep this up long enough for it to become self-sustaining before I get bored :<

I also hope that people will still care after Brawl comes out.

Guitar Woman
Feb 7th, 2008, 03:03 PM
Oh, also, when there's a loose ball, I almost always lose it because I jump the gun and try to grab it right away.

It's a hard habit to break, and you can't practice it on a low level AI because it's not vicious enough to go after you like that.

Guitar Woman

I've gotten to the Striker Cup finals a few times now and Petey's team is always the cheapest shit ever

I don't mind if the computer can control every character on the field at the same time, but when EVERY SIDEKICK HE'S GOT is a fucking Dry Bones it's impossible to get within 100 miles of the other side, let alone get a shot off. No matter what I do to try and get close to his goal, I always get tackled from about 4 different directions, and if I try using Birdo to deke one off there are two more just sitting and waiting until I stop spinning.
