View Full Version : Let's talk about NEGATIVE ATTITUDES and CHANGE.

Okay, now, guys. As I've talked about before, the forum is going to undergo a lot of change in the coming months as we work to streamline the communication process, bring the look of the forums in line with the main site's redesign, and incorporate actual forum posts as the comments for the site's articles.

For those of you who still haven't clued in to this, let me put it in simpler terms - For the first time since i-mockery or its previous incarnations has existed, the forums will actually have something in common with the actual web site.

These changes are aimed at increasing the i-mockery visitor base and the i-mockery forum visitor base, which in turns means that we will have more registered 'members' posting 'here'. In the past, it has largely been tradition to hound these people (if they don't fall within certain standards of behavior) until they leave. Yes, the site is called I-Mockery, and yes, you can and should be able to mock people on the I-Mockery forums. On the one hand, I don't want the message forum to become yet another bastion for the Aspergers-afflicted residents of communities such as 4chan and YTMND. On the other hand, our boards have become pretty stagnant of late, and I attribute this largely to our reputation and attitude toward new members.

My solution for this situation is in two parts:

1. Appoint a dedicated moderator for each forum (there will be around 5 discussion forums and 3 site-related forums), and 2-3 moderators for the main discussion forum. I feel a moderator's primary task is to drive balanced community discussion and remove uncontributing factors (in less cryptic terms, these people need to work with posters as opposed to passing direct judgment on them - as that is the role of our Administrators - and should tidy their forum of spam and other crap). Each of these new forums will encompass more topics that our current ones, and as such will engender more discussion and eventually create their own subculture (as seen in the philosophy and forum events forums) that it will be a moderator's duty to maintain.

2. Ask each of you in earnest to work with new members, at least until it's clear that they have nothing to offer our community. If the latter becomes a reality, I would prefer that you all still make your jabs and whatnot, but not hound these people and follow them from thread to thread until they leave on their own - at this point, it will be acceptable for you to make your case to the moderator(s) of the forums they frequent, who in turn will speak to them and dismiss them if necessary. I often refer to these forums as 'internet rehab' for idiots, and I feel that we could do more in this area and grow a member base without lowering our collective IQ.

I'd like your thoughts on the things I've discussed here, and feel free to nominate who you feel would moderate each of our future forums best. At present, the new forum categories will be:

I-Mockery Discussion Forums
- General Blabber
- Philosophy, Politics, and News
- Media Extravaganza (Combining music and movies & television and readings)
- Gaming & Technology (Combining gaming & technophile)
- Art Shit

I-Mockery Site Forums
- Articles
- Forum Events
- Questions & Suggestions
- Archives

Also, if you have suggestions about this forum layout, this is also a good thread to talk about that. In.

I agree with the fact that I-mock could be more user-friendly, at least towards new users. Because it's somewhat sad to see some new members to be trolled from the very beginning without any good reason. After all It takes time from the new users to learn not to take every word seriously.

I'd still like to see mock threads in future. Could it be possible to keep the mock wars section? Or are mock threads doomed to happen during annual mock wars?

The new forum categories sound great though.

Uh, this whole "open" attitude just applies to idiots, right? Not freaks and furries?

I mean, I've been pretty tolerant of zbf on the whole, but that's about the limit of what I want to put up with

Chojin

I'm not suggesting that we stop making fun of people, just that we do it more organized-like and let the admins ultimately decide who stays and goes. FOR EXAMPLE!

http://www.i-mockery.com/forum/showthread.php?t=26233&page=5

Threads like this one where we make fun of Clement I think are important to our HERITAGE. But compare this to the harassment zeldasbiggestfan and Guitar Woman regularly receive from Gadzooks and Company, and I think the latter is an approach that turns people off from the forums. There's certainly no love lost between myself and ZBF, but I get annoyed watching the same people piss and fight in every thread. Mix it up, people.

ArrowX

I'm all in for the more idea of being more tolerant, but lets face it. I'm pretty much the end result of a ZBF, or sports. I was looking back at the posts I was making 3 years ago when I first started on these forums I had an excellent laugh, I even started an "I'm not a character anymore" thread to buy some credibility. I'll admit it was a pretty disheartening time before the majority of the forums moved on from ragging on me and every post I made to the point of me being able to enjoy the community here. But again looking back I'm almost totally sure that most of the people who join the site are intimidated just how hostile a large majority of the board members are.

Again much of the boards hostility is probably from frustration due to the nature of i-mockery itself being a comedy site that isn't the now standard 4chan-ish humor. People show up with the idea that were all about the "random humor" when if you look at the site its largely more complex than posting a picture of an astronaut Whoopi Goldberg sodomizing a rhinoceros.

I would like to nominate myself for Moderator of the Around the Internet forum, if it continues to exist.

EDIT: does that layout mean no more Loveline board?

Is this site a money maker and meant to promote products and writers or for people that want to hang out and have a laugh?

I was waiting for this reply from you, so let's answer it! Yeah!

Currently very few people are hanging out or laughing, so at the moment it would appear to be NEITHER. I don't understand where you got product advertisement out of my post, but then again if I were you I would be very worried about my future here as well and probably lash out with nonsensical hyperbole and maybe toss the wife around or something.

Speaking of hyperbole GADZOOKS GOOD TO SEE YOU JOIN THE DISCUSSION now, if you could find it in your heart to look past my mention of your name in that 10 page block of text I dropped up there, I suggested that you and your INTERNET GANG do whatever you want, but in fewer threads, and that a moderator would then remove said twelve year old boys from the discussion, rather than have you engage them in terrible internet combat in every thread on the forum and make them actually post more than they would have done so otherwise!

Thanks everyone for nominating me! I'd love to mod the art shit board and make it into a liveable place for all the hiding artists here as well as attempt to give consistent critiques to the posters there.

Also, I feel that Kevin has done a wonderful job of moderating the Philosophy boards, considering there is a large cult-like following, and that board is easily one of the most active now, and surprisingly mature (at least generally). If anyone else is to moderate that forum, I feel it would be largely unfair to Kevin to have his powers taken away. The forum, however, may be large enough to have a second mod. In that case I would recommend either Sethomas or Kahljorn, whichever is more willing, to help him.

lol :< okay, Q&A TIME LET'S BOUNCE IDEAS BACK ON THE I-MOCKERY CORPORATE BLACKBOARD

Yes, Fathom, shoot!

And is the SAFE FOR WORK part ever going to change? Where will all the stuff go?
The forums being safe for work has always been true, and from our NSFW 'weather balloon' thread in the mock wars forum, it's pretty clear to me that being able to post NSFW material is a major contributing factor for making forums retarded. So no, the forums will remain SAFE FOR WORK.

Yes, Terra, you have an idea!

Loveline is really going to bit the dust? Oh well, survival of the fittest and all that. :(

Loveline doesn't really get enough posts to warrant an entire separate forum, and I think all of the threads in Loveline would work just as well in General Blabber. Really, the goal here is to consolidate most of the forums into a 'general' forum and then mix what's left into forums that are likely to have their own culture away from the masses in the general forum - For example, the art shit, music, movies, gaming, philosophy, and forum events forums all have a much different flavor to them than say, mock wars or general blabber. I think we should, in the immortal words of the prophet Smuckers, preserve that.

Go, Grislygus! Shoot!

Even though my vote doesn't count for shit...I would also like the idea of an unimportant board being run by someone completely incompetent, just for kicks.

This is what I'm talking about - I think you're one of the better posters on the forum, but clearly you feel like an OUTSIDER. This is why we need ATTITUDE ADJUSTMENT and SHOCK THERAPY and PAINFUL RAPE as part of our HIGHLY CORPORATE I-MOCKERY VERNACULAR. Also, we kinda did that thing with unimportant forums, and we're trying to reduce clutter here.

Yo! Emu! My man! My dog! Speak up!

WE NEED A GAY-UPS FORUM

We don't! We're just going to delete gay-upped posts from now on, though I'm going to ask that moderators that do this use the 'temp delete' option so that us admins can review (as Rongi so helpfully did in this thread, although on that note I feel that Gadzooks and Guitar Woman weren't quite getting into the naked slapfighting stage yet so I reverted the delete).

Good work, Emu, come back! MLE, I choose you!

Kevin isn't going anywhere, at least as far as I'm aware. The position of philo board mod is already taken by him. I want to avoid making ALL of our tenured members moderators, as that doesn't make a lot of sense. One mod per discussion forum, two or three mods for general blabber, and we'll add mods to flavor on the 'site' forums although I'm leaning toward having all i-mockery staff contributors having mod powers in that sector.

I can't think of anything to start this with, DuFresne!

How about a News and Politics forum for Kevin, and then a Philosophy and Religion board for Seth or Kahl.

Again, clutter. The same types of people post on all of these topics, so it doesn't make any sense to divide them.

Max! Max Burbank! THE MAN WITH THE PUH-LAHN!

I can still make fun of people who suck huge monkey titty, though, right?

Yes, again, feel free to mock people, just try to give them a glimmer of a chance and don't drag the rest of the boards down when you do lay into them.

Okay, to address a previous point in detail, when we make this change I will first merge all of the posts in the forums that we're consolidating, and move the rest to general blabber. From here, we can go one of two ways - either we then

1. Move the ENTIRE FORUMS as we know them into a new 'backup' forum and start the board over anew, or

2. We just continue the boards as-is with the reassigned forums.

I think there are pros and cons to both options and we'll have a poll later on to help us gauge what you dudes think, but for now let's DISCUSS.

Guitar Woman
Aug 21st, 2007, 10:16 PM
I'm in favor of a backup forum for the current stuff. I'm sure nobody wants our shiny new forums to be all cluttered. Buuuuuuuuuuuut make sure you keep the Thread Backups and Mock Wars Backups from this forum on the new one.

Chojin

Yeah, I plan to have a general 'backups' forum with sub-forums for 'Thread backups', '2005 mock wars', '2007 mock wars', and '2007 forum archives'. Who knows, we could even archive the forums like this every year and make it a sort of HOLIDAY.

As you know from our previous talks, this is what I thought would be best for the forums once the site redesign is ready to launch. Plus, with a clean slate like that, more random users from the main site are going to want to register and join in the discussions. It's far more daunting to join a forum that already has established cliques and other bullshit going on... but when you're dealing with a brand new forum, the web is your oyster. :o

I see value in having a clean slate, as that might not be as TERRIBLE and DAUNTING. On the other hand, having a ton of established threads can also make people feel like a couple of comments isn't going to stand out too much in the fray.

It's also important to let people know that this is an established forum, too. I'm largely in favor of keeping our threads and cleaning stuff up.

Chojin

Well, in the past, rog would post a link to a new article and then have everyone here comment on it, and that's what would now go in the articles forum. If POSSIBLE, it'd be great if the comments forum were visible on here, but looked like the rest of the forums if you visited it from the forums (with a first post from IMOCK BOT or somethign with a link and brief synopsis of the article) and looked like the integrated version if you visited it from the site (signatures off, et al).

I'll see if I can force the comment style for external pages and leave it normal for inside the forum. I've been thinking about grabbing the title from the articles anyway, but a synopsis would have to be hand-written. The goal was to automate it much as possible because there are so many damned articles. Right now, literally only three lines of code have to be added to each article.

I don't see anything wrong with that. If I can't than I'll just make a new thread elsewhere with the old one linked to it, but that's counter-intuitive and stupid.

TELL ME CHOJIN HOW DOES IT FEEL TO PLAY THE ROLE OF JOSEF MENGELE IN THIS BRAVE NEW 'PERFECT' FUTURE YOU ALL HAVE PLANNED!? TELL ME THAT YOU ROTTEN FASCIST BASTARDS! SURELY KULTURKAMPF WON'T STAND FOR THIS! FIGHT THE POWER! UP THA PUNX!

A merge of what Rankeri and Fathom said would work. If they posted in an old thread they get like a warn point, 3 of em and theyre gone. But, if they post a new thread with the link to what they're answering two it should be good. But only make it for shit that's really old like over two months and/or completely forgotten.

I don't think we should cut back on being ourselves, just cut back on the BANDWAGON BEATDOWN METAL MELTDOWN that piles up when someone decides on their opinion of a person.

Guys we all know that in at least one year the forums will be back to their original retarded state. Since we seemingly can't go more than a whole year before adding a forum about sharks, the "safe for work forum" etc.

Also where do I now post my personal "I'm calling you out!" threads without the Mock Wars forum

Also can this be considered "I-Mockalypse II"?

I am voicing my full support for the defagification of the forums. They are a threat to our very existence. I think we also need to cut down on the number of stickied threads and posts with all-caps subject lines. >:

I can't wait to see what will happen...even if they don't allow me to sign on to it. I save Max/Boogie and even the odd Pickleman comic for a rainy day that could be put in a seperate section. I save reading Mr. Mockerys Blog for when I get banned and then I post obnoxious stuff :) After six or seven years reading this site I still enjoy it...Some things are organic and just happen, you can't gloss a site and put a heavy hand in and expect people will show up. I had diahrea from eating left over food yesterday so I'm feeling nostalgic.

Is it weird that I don't really see anything wrong with FartinMowler? Have I just not been here long enough? If that's the case, then he seems to have reformed from whatever assholery he used to engage in.

Not unless these actions cut it's head off and stuff the mouth with garlic and throw the head in the ocean or a river or running water of some other kind and then drive a stake through it's heart, which I say because I'm comparing this board to a vampire, in case you didn't get it.

Dear Jixby's internet gang,

I apologize for not going POST-FOR-POST with you guys on this serious issue of internet message board moderation, but I'm afraid that arguing with you idiots would perpetuate the exact same problems that we're seeking to fix in the first place! So allow me to air my grievances in this post and then you can all just read it again as often as the mood takes you and pretend I'm replying instead of deleting your posts in this thread from now on, okay? Okay.

Some of you are genuinely funny people! However, you are apparently not satisfied with posting on a message board with anyone other than yourselves, which is exactly what you all did while Jixby's forums were still 'active'. If you don't feel that you can participate at i-mockery in any other capacity than driving people away from our community, by all means consider this my cordial invitation to get the fuck out. You are not nearly as clever as you think you are, and I am way, way funnier than all of you. That is all.

Jixby's still cool.

Signed,
An adult

I'm kinda late getting into this, but I'd prefer if we kept all the current threads and just moved them to the new boards (after cleaning things up a bit), rather than to start from scratch and have all this stuff in some viewable archive.

Just so you all know, Chojin is changing the forum specifically to fit my interests. I am bigger and stronger than him and could totally beat him up and have threatened to do it with his entire family watching on several occasions if he doesn't do exactly as I tell him, and he doesn't want that to happen so he does whatever it takes to keep me happy.

Glad I could straighten this out for all of you.

Seriously, all of the media crap going to one forum is an effort-saver.
